No, it is not 1860 again.
But with all the talk of the 10th Amendment, nullification and interposition, states rights and secession -- following Gov. Rick Perry's misstatement that Texas, on entering the Union in 1845, reserved in its constitution a right to secede -- one might think so.
Chalk up another one for those Tea Party activists who exploded in cheers when Sister Sarah brought up the dread word in endorsing Rick Perry in the primary.
Looking back in American history, however, these ideas, these sentiments, decried as insane inside the Beltway, were once as American as "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere."
"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical," wrote Thomas Jefferson to James Madison from Paris in January 1787, about Revolutionary War Capt. Daniel Shay's anti-tax rebellion in Massachusetts.

It’s got to happen. We can’t live with these people. We need to go our separate ways.
An interesting read, but it is this last sentence in the piece that truly sums up the reality of the Tea Party Movement and why the idiots in Washington (and many State Capitols) had best pay very, very close attention.
if we start this .. it will catch on..
While what you say may be totally true, what concerns me is what will happen AFTER we throw them out. “More of the same” won’t cut it.
We’ve GOT to have people who are determined with all of their being to govern our country under basic conservative principles. Otherwise, just “throwing the bums out” will be for nothing.
And speaking of secession...I wonder what the government of a seceded state would look like? What rules would be there that weren’t before? What laws would no longer be welcome? WHO would be welcome...and who wouldn’t?
Just thoughts on a very early morning.
Are you suggesting with your comment as quoted above that we wouldn't be in the place we are now where people would consider secession? Or are you suggesting with your comment that Hillary would have brought us together so that we wouldn't consider secession?
Good questions, but lucky for us all some pretty smart “dead white guys” came up with the right answers, the right approach over 200 years ago. All we really have to do is follow that beautifully simple playbook.
Now, to your larger point.....we have to find people who are actually WILLING to follow it.
Its a great idea if you didn’t have to be dumber than a box of rocks to agree with it.
>>If only we would have had Hillary
The Hillary comment leads into the parady of the NYTimes Clinton sub-headline below [the date is off in the future]
My Man, I’m with you-I love it when people face the realities of our political circumstances.
If we start this....we had best be sure we want to finish it.
did s.p. really mention secession in her perry speach???
I’ll be willing to stay the duration. Whatever it takes to get government off free people’s backs. Remember, most Soviet citizens lived their entire lives not even knowing what freedom was, and still aren;t doing too well. I don’t want that for our children.
My problem is I do not care to pay for other states huge welfare programs.
If you guys start this, I for one, being a Canadian am coming to help and I won’t be alone, there’s a few of us that would love a chance at real freedom, not this socialist country’s idea of it.
I for one would relax the immigration laws to let you come and join the party. As far as I’m concerned, you would be most welcome.
I’m glad that’s clarified. Thought we had an accidental left turn posting from her 2012 presidential campaign for a minute there.
To expand on your “we can’t live with these people” theme:
There is no way to live peaceably with a people who insist on your enslavement and your capitulation to their control, especially when THEY are willing to use force to implement their tyranny.
If all out war is to be avoided, a complete political separation, wherein their policies have NO effect on our lives, is the only way.
