A large majority of U.S. voters believe that homosexual men and women should be allowed to serve openly in the US military, according to a poll out Wednesday.
The independent Quinnipiac University poll asked Americans about their views on the law that requires gay service members to keep quiet about their sexual orientation or face expulsion from the military, known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
The survey was conducted after President Barack Obama last month renewed his vow to change the law and allow gays to serve openly in uniform.
The poll found that 57 percent of US voters believe that gays should serve openly, an idea opposed by 36 percent.
Americans also believe by a 66 to 31 percent margin that it is discriminatory to prevent openly gay men and women to serve.
However, by a 54 to 38 percent margin, those surveyed also believe that gays serving in the military should limit displaying their sexual orientation on the job.
US military households -- homes with an active or reserve member, or a veteran in their family -- were evenly divided over the issue.

Then I will consider the issue. NOT before that point in time.
Unfortunately we have all seen what “open gayness” really means.
Aren’t the taliban gonna love it when we send the Village People out to do battle?
Absolute BS. I talked to the American people, and the vast, vast majority do not want gays in their military, schools, churches, day care centers, boy scouts, or zip code.
2. Palin has a strong core of support amongst a faction of conservatives, but doesn't have much support outside of that bubble.
Don't shoot me, I'm just the messenger.
Really, all 300 million of them? Have you polled Democrats? Independents? Folks who are nominally Christian but don't attend church regularly (the latter are far more common than the saved, btw).
I am probably the only one in this country who is an agnostic on this issue. My main concerns are 1. This will lead to an increase in "sensitivity" training 2. This will lead to lesbians driving out heterosexual women in the armed forces.
Houston just elected a Lesbian mayor. So, the American people may be slowing changing their minds about a lot of things.
Repeatedly, Quinnipiac University polls are called independent. They always seem to go in a direction other than what you know sociatal opinion to be. Everything I have heard and everything I have seen indicates that most people acknowledge that open expression of homosexuality in the military would be detrimental to the necessary cohesion of a fighting unit. Just one question...why can’t they just keep their private lives private and do their job like the heterosexual people. Then their is no objection to them serving and the issue goes away.
Really, all 300 million of them?
Yep. Thanks for your feedback. I'll put you in the column with the tiny, tiny minority of admitted gays and their closeted gay friends.

I would add that any person caught having sex with a person not their spouse should be punished. Not discriminatory, it would apply to both homosexuals and heterosexuals.

Now you’re trying to destroy a cherished military tradition.
Maybe so. And maybe this is where the distinction between morality and troop morale comes into play.
But from a morality perspective, I can’t judge the difference between a homosexual sex act and an act of adultery.
“and America is overwhelmingly conservative. God, if only that was true.”

What they says they is is often not what they is is it?

I can tell you which one produces the shortest average lifespan.
About 51% don't support openly gay people in the service according to a recent poll given only to service members by the four Military Times publications (owned by Gannett).
This number is down from 65% a few years ago.
Why is this number down? Well, I suspect that today's young recruits are much more, for lack of a better word, "indoctrinated" into acceptance of gay lifestyles. They went to school where they had friends and acquaintances who were openly gay and where tolerance was drummed into their heads by teachers and peer pressure. They've had family members come out as openly gay. If they had civilian jobs prior to enlisting, they likely had openly gay co-workers and worked for companies with established anti-discrimination policies.
All polls indicate this country is slowly becoming more tolerant of gays but will push back if asked to embrace too much too quickly, hence the voter slapdowns of gay marriage. We can post here on a conservative forum pretending this isn't happening but that's not going to change the fact that out in the real world every indication says differently.
Again, don't shoot the messenger.

Personally I would feel more confident with Palin in office than with any Democrat who has been president since Truman. The real challenge to Palin is the fact that women don’t want a woman in the white house. If they did we would have president Clinton the second right now. In the 2008 primary season American women (who vote Democrat at a far higher rate than men do) selected a totally unqualified Marxist who is dedicated to the destruction of this country and rejected Hillary Clinton. Having said that how am I to believe that the same women who would pick a zero over a woman running as a Democrat are going to elect a woman running as a Republican? Women are the majority, men cannot elect a president who does not carry the woman’s vote.
It depends upon how angry your wife gets when she finds out about the affair and whether or not a gun is handy ;)

True enough but you are talking specifics and I am talking averages.
While it is true that a bathhouse culture among certain homosexuals has contributed towards negative stereotypes, one shouldnt discount the masses of normal hardworking gays that have and currently serve our military honorably. Admittedly, my own personal inclinations are revolted by the idea of same sex relations. But, why should our own inclinations dictate how we feel about the interactions of others? Why cant two people of the same sex lead a healthy and normal life together? I must confess that I have known a number of homosexuals who own their own businesses, work as professionals, and engage in politics. Many of these people believe in protecting the unborn, support the free market and believe in the importance of preserving our freedom against foreign threats. Why shouldnt they be able to openly serve in the military? Homosexuals are just like any other group, some are bad, but many are good. Why shouldnt we give them a fair chance like anyone else?
Alomost 60% military say hell no to homos in the military.....
