I want people to store food not only for their sake, but for mine as well. I dont want to decide which of my kids have to go hungry when you and your unprepared kin come knocking on my door. Contrary to progressive-collectivist thinking, every individual who takes care of themselves and their families benefits society by not becoming a burden. So take responsibility now and start today. Dont expect the Feds to come by to hand you your ration of government-rationed cheese. You could be in for a long wait. Wait too long, and you may end up with a green-stained mouth from eating grass, like the poor Irish during the potato famine in the mid 1800s. Or seriously reevaluate your aversion to cannibalism. Compared to those desperate methods, dumpster diving comes off as luxury cuisine.

When they finally run out of food for the raccoons - you’re going to have a whole bunch of hungry, pissed off raccons running amok.
Betting pool: how long will it take for the raccoons to start going cannnibal once the raccoon chow runs out?
I wish the cannery here would be a bit more open. I got one invite, and it took me a couple months to get it. I love to go again.
When it all goes bad, the focus gets local pretty quick. If you’re in a nurban area, don’t wait around for things to get better and have some place to go.
Handgun: .357 Revolver - Goes bang every time, not complicated, can practice with cheap .38 special ammo, malfunction??? just pull the trigger again. Cheap... Taurus, Best... Smith & Wesson 686 stainless.
Long gun: Pump 12 GA shotgun. No substitute. Best all-around self defense weapon. 00, 0 or slightly smaller buckshot.
Unfortunately travel may be a problem. Being out in the open, exposed, is pretty much an un-defendable position to be in.
Others desperate to leave will kill you and your family, and steal your car.
The key is to get the hell out of dodge by being on the road within minutes before everyone else realizes the event is not a drill. And stop for nobody.
We do our canning on an electric stove using the boiling water bath method. We use one of the big roaster cookers to prepare the food item.
Preheat the glass jars in the microwave for about 15 secs. Jars will be very hot. Then pour the food preparation into the jars, put the flat on and loosely screw on the ring. (Never pour hot food into a cold jar) Then place the filled jars into a large pot of boiling water, being careful to not completely cover the top of the jars with water. Make sure the jars are full to within one inch of the top. Half full jars will break in the boiling water bath.Depending on the recipe for the item you are canning, boil according to instructions. Remove the hot jars and place them to the side. When you hear the lids “pop” the jar is sealed.
And the people said AMEN.

This is very true.
I have an area I plan to go to, but I have to work on the rest of it, building a cache and all.
Don’t see any reason to build up stores here in the city, when it’s as simple as a ladder and some broken glass for people to get in.
As for helping other people, great plan, but you can’t pull someone out of the water, unless you are standing firm on the bank.
When we had the kids home, I canned by the hundreds of jars. Now I’m more likely to do up lots of jams for gifts because I like to scrounge for berries in the summer. I do, however put up lots of soups and chili in the winter. Nothing like simmering a big crock pot all day to chase the February blahs.
We replaced most of our windows this past year and I had the hubby store the old ones in the garage and we’re thinking of an add on grow room off our walk-out basement.
I believe that the water bath method is for acidic foods only. Tomatoes, pickle relish, etc. For other foods, you have to can using a pressure cooker. Green beans, corn, peas, etc. The Ball Recipe book will tell you the correct way, anyway. I just know that if you don’t pressure can certain foods, you risk serious food borne disease. Botulism???
The folks that talk about that junk are referred to as “12 er’s”.
This is what Ahmadinejad ranted about when the Mullahs met with Putin. Utter nonsense.
And yes, it is already the 11th.
Best defense is good neighbors. I have them. And some of them have been neighbors to my family for 110+ years.
And we still have some old tractors without solid state ignition. Although this is not why we keep them. My father is very attached to one of them. Looks great, he repainted and reworked it last year, an 88 Oliver.
I lost my job about a week ago (at 62). 100+ year old company, going through a mess because of a California division that closed. Had worked for them 20 years, in 2 stints (last for 5-1/2 years). But if it were not for a 35 year old disabled son, we would not be concerned. But have told other of my friends, “a country boy can survive”.
