Store or Starve: A beginner’s guide to food storage

I want people to store food not only for their sake, but for mine as well. I don’t want to decide which of my kids have to go hungry when you and your unprepared kin come knocking on my door. Contrary to progressive-collectivist thinking, every individual who takes care of themselves and their families benefits society by not becoming a burden. So take responsibility now and start today. Don’t expect the Feds to come by to hand you your ration of government-rationed cheese. You could be in for a long wait. Wait too long, and you may end up with a green-stained mouth from eating grass, like the poor Irish during the potato famine in the mid 1800’s. Or seriously reevaluate your aversion to cannibalism. Compared to those desperate methods, dumpster diving comes off as luxury cuisine.

I became interested in canning a little over a year ago. I love to cook, and I love to eat good food. Canning is so rewarding in many aspects. One, is the fact that you can make a huge stock pot of soup, chili, stew, or anything... and eat for months to come on your pantry supplies. I also love to share my food with friends. It makes me very happy to be able to cook something delicious and share it! When you can, the food is good for virtually a million years. Unlike freezing, where you are totally dependent on the freezer.

You raise good points, but I just can’t see the value of storing that much for that long.

While I wouldn’t want to be just another person standing at the stadium during Katrina, totally dependent upon others, as a Catholic I would shortly be feeding all the kids and elderly I saw and would be out of food - trusting in God and in selflessness accepting my own and my own family’s starvation if He chooses such. Who needs to live forever, it’s heaven we’re after afterall. Faith of a child.

Save enough to not be a short term burden, but you’d be helping the neighbors soon anyway and no ones a supermarket.

That’s not to insult the faith of anyone saving food for 20-30 years and larger volumes, I just see the side that if we’re all “screwed” together, we’re going to take control of the bad situation sooner, instead of ducking down to the basement and turning more inward.

"Surprise" starvation is for liberals.

Believe it.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Finished it two weeks ago. One reason I am building up for 6 months to 18 months. To be honest I am not sure I would want to live in a world that has under gone chaos for more than two growing seasons.

I have some of the same doubts you have, my fear is a neighbor showing up at the door with a staving child, so I do what the bible proscribes and try to put away an extra ten percent as a tithe. But as the head of my household my first duty after that to God is to my family. I can only be so responsible to others and will not place my family in danger to help the careless and the thoughless.

Right now they are saying the same thing about you.
