Rep. Issa: Was Obama ‘Just Lying to Congress’ on Tort Reform Pledge?
CNS News ^ | 2/9/2010 | Fred Lucas

(CNSNews.com) – In September, President Barack Obama told a joint session of Congress that his administration would look into tort reform as a means of lowering health care costs, but the administration’s Department of Health and Human Services stated in congressional staff report that medical malpractice reform is “not a priority.”

Issa knows what he wants to ask the president at the Feb. 25 bipartisan conference.

“The first question I have for President Obama is if he still stands by his call for tort reform or was he just lying to Congress when he directed Secretary [Kathleen] Sebelius to pursue an initiative addressing the costs of defensive medicine,” Issa said in a statement Monday.

I am very much against suits like the ones that produce huge medical malpractice awards -- and enrich scumbag ambulance-chasers, like the one who is about to marry his mistress/baby momma.

However, there are cases like the guy who used to sit in front of us in church every Sunday: he recently went into the hospital for a routine elective carotid surgery and caught one of those "resistant staph infections" that are rampant in hospitals nowadays. After being bounced into and out of ICU several times, he woke up with a colostomy! Now, after several more ICU cycles, he is finally out and in rehab, but the likelihood of full recovery is not at all good.

When faced with serious malpractice like that, what other course than litigatation is there?

Was his lips moving? Then he was lying.

Rename, repackage, rewrite it a tad smaller, and sell another pig in a poke.

Tennessee has joined several other states in trying to pass a Health Care Freedom Act. NO COLAs for granny, retired Military or retired fed employees. BIG NEW fees for Tricare for Life retired over 65 Military's secondary health ins. (DOD bill already passed, delayed but goes into effect 2011)

Tort reform is a straw man. The “cost” of payouts to lawyers and their clients, good and bad alike, is less than $5 billion per year. less than 1/2 of one percent of $2.4 trillion health care cost.

FWIW, bank overdraft fees every year come to about $40 billion. We can survive the one but not the other? Check out some of the bonuses paid to health care company execs. One of them made about $500 million all by his lonesome.

While throwing stones at lawyers and ranting about tort reform is a fun GOP past-time, it is really just a load of crap about on the level of “cap and trade”.

His idea of Tort reform is to hire lawyers to sue anyone who dares criticize health reform.

"In the United States, impeachment can occur both at the federal and state level. The Constitution defines impeachment at the federal level and limits impeachment to "The President, Vice President, and all civil officers of the United States" who may only be impeached and removed for "treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors"."(Wikipedia)

“Tort reform is a straw man. The “cost” of payouts to lawyers and their clients, good and bad alike, is less than $5 billion per year.”

Where does Issa come up with $200B/year impact? Also, what about malpractice insurance related to the tort craziness - that surely affects costs more than the bank drafts analogy.

Issa is probably adding in estimated defensive medicine costs. Problem is, no one really knows how much defensive medicine is fear of lawsuits and how much is doctors padding their pockets. I am sure some of both.

There is some tort craziness, but Big Business and Insurance lobbies put out a lot of just ridiculous stuff. Like the McDonalds Coffee case, which most people have heard only a teeny weeny part of. When people hear the whole story, their minds start to change.

parsy, who will find you a link on the medical stuff if you like

This is a great tactic to expose Obummer’s lies regarding Republican ideas. He will never compromise on this since he is beholden to sleazy ambulance-chasers.

You know, I’m forever hearing rants against CEOs as to how much their paid to do an extremely rough job.
Can anyone out there tell me just how much the upper echelons of unions take home? Not to mention that it seems as though at least once a month some union personage makes off with the loyal members’ monies of some type.

He’s my congressman. I could not bring myself to vote him out.

I also have a very conservative, pro-life congressional rep, but I would vote her out if it would guarantee that we'd vote all of this elitist, careerist, corrupt bunch of senators and congress-critters out and replace them with those who've never been a part of the Washington beltway.

It would be like pushing the reset button. For a time, at least, there'd be folks there who aren't automatically assumed to be corrupt.

I believe he is “agnostic” on this one, like he just announced in regards to only raising taxes on the over $250,000 crowd. He has to be open to fixing what Bush left him you know......

Well Parsy, I don’t doubt there’s tons of factors affecting medical costs...we need all the cost savers on the table and I’m not going to distrust Issa’s $200 billion/year with a wave of the hand. Yeah, I don’t doubt there’s corporate and doctor’s greed playing into this. The question is, how do we best clean it up, without giving in to the socialists...we’d best get about doing it, ‘cause they aint going away, the slimesuckers...
