Democratic Climate Revolt
Wall Street Journal ^ | FEBRUARY 7, 2010 | Editorial

Posted on 02/07/2010 6:42:59 PM PST by ricks_place

A bipartisan effort to stop the EPA's anticarbon crusade.

The Obama Administration has been moving full-speed ahead on anticarbon regulation, never mind waiting for Congress to pass a bill. But now opposition is building among senior Democrats, with two powerful committee Chairmen introducing a bill last week to bar the Environmental Protection Agency from declaring that carbon is a dangerous pollutant.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is busy writing new rules that would let her drive a tax-and-regulation bulldozer through the U.S. economy under laws never meant to apply to greenhouse gases. Ms. Jackson is expected to issue new anticarbon regulations for cars and trucks next month before moving on to power plants and other industries.

This is all too much for Missouri's Ike Skelton and Minnesota's Collin Peterson, the Chairmen of the House Armed Services and Agriculture Committees, respectively. Along with Missouri Republican Jo Ann Emerson, they are pushing a two-page bill that would amend the Clean Air Act to restore Congress's original intent and strip CO2 and other greenhouse gases from the statutory language.

This is bipartisanship we can believe in. Such legislation would vaporize the EPA's "endangerment finding" for carbon and thus require the Administration to use democratic debate and persuasion if it really wants to reshape the energy markets and impose huge new costs on American consumers. What a thought.

"If Congress doesn't do something soon, the EPA is going to cram these regulations through all on their own," Mr. Peterson said. "I have no confidence that EPA can regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act without severe harm to all taxpayers."

Added Mr. Skelton: "Simply put, we cannot tolerate turning over the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions to unelected bureaucrats at EPA. America's energy and environmental policies should be set by Congress." Yes, they should be.

...I congratulate Ms. Jackson on her degrees with very high marks in a difficult technical field...

You did not state EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson was NOT qualified. She has multiple degrees in an EPA relevant field of study and has served as an administrator of a State level environmental department. I do not know if she held any positions in private industry.

She is implementing the Obama Cap and Trade Policy. It is the Obama Policy that is wrong politically, technically, and economically.

Peter principal? Lisa Jackson is as high as one can go in the Environmental field unless IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri resigns. The Obama Administration draws heavily on government types for positions but the Dems won the election.

I am obliged to confess I should sooner live in a society governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston telephone directory than in a society governed by the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University. - William F. Buckley

A memorable quote deserving reissue!

If a bill gets written and heard on the floor - and goes to a vote - the public will benefit, even if it fails to get passed and sent to the Zero. And if the Zero vetoes the bill, and there are not enough votes to override - again - it puts forth the idea that the supporters of CAP AND TAX want to ignore the public - and ignore the fact that the science of AGW has been thoroughly discredited.

Then - when the people get a chance to vote - anyone associated with defeating the will of the people will be thrown out!!

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has an agenda but she also has a summa cum laude degree from Tulane University’s School of Chemical Engineering and a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Princeton University. More than a wee bit of smarts.

.....and yet she has ONLY worked in administrative positions in various state and federal agencies....never used any of those chemical engineering "smarts" to earn so much as a pack of gum in the industry.

I'll give you this, she seems smart enough to know she would be unmasked if she were to get a "real" job (even with AA) so she chose to "serve the people" instead.

I wonder what she earns at EPA and how it compares to salaries of commensurately lettered people in the industry?

Anyone who thinks that carbon dioxide is a pollutant, is a moron, and there's no other way to put it.

Despite their jackass ways, Ike Skelton and Collin Peterson have been two of my favorite Democrats.

Skelton is a well-reasoned, pro-defense Democrat.

Peterson is a genuine blue dog and was the first to call on Al Gore to throw in the towel on the 2000 election. Both are hated by the left wing of their party, but tolerated because their constituencies are relatively conservative.

What would you label someone who doesn't think that carbon dioxide is a pollutant, yet convinces voters it is a pollutant in order to implement a no-growth, eco-fiendish agenda? ELF, ALF, and EPA!

“This woman is perhaps the most incompetent person to ever head the EPA and that’s saying quite a bit.”

She’s a puppet of greenpeace, earth first, sierra club and all the other enviromarxist organizations. They’re the ones writing the new regulations, and they will absolutely not stop just because of climategate - in fact they see this as their best last hope and will do everything to cram it through.

I’m not sure whether Obama would veto legislation to stop the epa - he would have to be extremely dense and/or politically suicidal for him to veto such a bill. But his self delusion never ceases to amaze me.

Well, she attended a Catholic high school that is highly-regarded and, IIRC, won a scholarship to Tulane. I would *hope* that Tulane would not pass her along as an affirmative-action token... but she *was* the only black female on that campus at the time. That's the story I've heard, anyway - so I leave it up to you to decide whether she's as smart as everyone seems to believe. This is a person, after all, who didn't think to make sure her own mother had flood insurance - in New Orleans. Maybe she's just "book smart".

da One will veto any such legislation.

Good, because then he will own it all by his little lonesome.

He can then try to explain away the resulting eonomic catastrophe to the voters, with no way to blame it on Bush.

Later, and this assumes no over-ride of his veto, it can be repealed by a GOP majority, with plenty of scared Rat "bipartisanship".

It’s a con. They know it. Defunding the EPA would be the only remedy for this, otherwise Obo vetoes and they say they tried with a wink back at him.
