Mitch Landrieu appears to be winning election in a landslide (~60%).
“Are the Landrieus the Louisiana Kennedys?”
You damn right they are and most of the rest of Louisiana wants them gone like the Kennedy’s.
If things had remained the same in NOLA, I could agree with you. But, they have changed dramatically for the better over the long run. Mitch Landrieu is naught but a political hack just like his sister, Mary. He, too will pass. The good news for NOLA is that “Katrina” forced thousands upon thousands of hard working, loyal American Black folk to leave NOLA and head to northern LA, TX, OK, etc. I count many of these great folks as my personal friends, and to a man and woman they relate to me how much they love NOLA and their families that remain there. But, they never will go back, because they tell me that NOLA is the Detroit of the south. I cannot tell you how many Black women have told me that jobs are ten times more available and better in North Texas and, more importantly the school systems in North Texas blow away anything in NOLA. Yes, these good folks dream for the success and well being for their children. Eventually, unlike Detroit, NOLA will evolve with a different demographic make-up then what exists today. And....NOLA will benefit from the Hispanic and Oriental/Asian growth that will positively influence its future. The failed policies of POTUS “incompetent” Obama, “braindead” Nagin and the corrupt Democrat Party will diminish as LA in general becomes a solid “red’ state. Business development will occur and the convention and visitor traffic will soar as NOLA grasps a true leadership role in these areas. The crime level will diminish as the handout and welfare dogma of the Obama types disappears. And, folks who now reside in NOLA best broom the Obama loyalists, who only bog them down into more failure in both economic opportunity and life. Socialism, Obama’s love ain’t the ticket and the sooner good Blacks residing in NOLA grasp that fact and broom the likes of Obama the quicker they will advance on all productive fronts. Failure to do that will cause NOLA to sink and become a second Detroit with all the misery and failure that goes with it. Wise up current NOLA dudes and gals!!!
She tried to be governor once and placed third in 1995 because black voters went for Jefferson and she split the white vote with Foster taking the smaller share. Foster ended up endorsing one of her re-election bids later on.
Say what you will about Mitch but I believe he is a vast improvement over most mayors they have had in the last few decades and I believe that his version of New Orleans will be one that we’ll all be impressed with in the next few years.
Actually, it was Cleo Fields, not Jefferson. Jefferson ran in 1999, and got thumped by Foster.
...guess it’s not a “chocolate city” anymore.
Anything will be better than “It’s someone elses fault crybaby nagin.”
Of course he is a democrap liberal and N.O. is still a cess pool on the brink of a meltdown.

Who was the most conservative candidate for New Orleans Mayor, among all eleven of them?
If you ever wanted to see an example of how liberalism makes a complete mess of things, New Orleans is it.
I have given up hoping the city will ever change.
It's too bad because, regardless of what some say, the city is a national treasure. Unfortunately, it also has a death wish.
Alaska does it the IL way. Palin lost the primary for that office in 2002. That’s when I first heard of her.
Also
Pennsylvania - also can’t be filled. The last one (D) died so the Republican President Pro Tempore of the Senate had been acting as LT.
Massachusetts -Romney officially endorsed RINO Kerry Healy as his running mate in 2002, she unfortunately won easily over a conservative.
And according to the Green Papers which has incomplete info
http://www.thegreenpapers.com/slg/executive.phtml
Hawaii
Montana
New Mexico
New York
The don’t mention it for Nebraska but Nebraska is one too.
I think that’s it.
Colorado used to do it but it was changed because Bill Owens didn’t like his LT Joe Rogers.
A state convention chooses the nominees in Michigan after the primary. In practice the Governor makes the pick just like the US VP.
So it ain’t rare. It seems to be more prevalent than the most sensible option of electing them on tickets in the primary and GE.
A whole lot of states elect the office separately.

There’s an article on the history of the IL post.
Back when it was separately elected in the GE splits were nonetheless extremely rare.

Paul Simon was the first opposition LT in nearly a century.
Back then the LT was also acting Governor whenever the Governor left the state (so Dick was afraid to ever to leave the state lest Simon sign or veto a bill). Like in Cali. When Jerry Brown was running for President he had a GOP LT (the last one), Mike Curb who acted as Governor and vetoed bills and issued executive orders. The courts upheld his actions after the rats sued. Ironically with the Cali position vacant since the Senate won’t approve Ahnold’s RINO choice Jerry Brown as AG acted as Governor when Ahnold went to DC.
So for the 1970 constitution they changed it because of Paul Simon. I’m actually shocked they didn’t try to change it after 1986. Dawn Clark Netsch introduced legislation at some point, it went nowhere. I bet they try to do something about it in 2011.
(Funny aside, for some reason the suntimes has a blog post from slimeball Texas rat Ronnie Earle saying why he is running for LT Governor in Texas.)
I roomed and boarded with a Cajun family when I worked in Opelousas, and I loved the food!! Now, I have my Jambalaya recipe just about perfected, and I enjoy my gumbo but, "she ain't quite jes' right" yet... '-)
'Course I missed out on the blessing of having a genuine Cajun grandmother for a teacher. Lucky you!!!
~~~~~~~~~~
Now you started something! Big pot o' Jambalaya goin' on the stove "rat now"... (It would be gumbo, but I'm fresh out of Okra...)
Re the original subject: when I was in LA, I worked the 6pm to 6am shift, and "Blackie's midnight lunches" she packed were great. But this Texan was never quite able to prepare myself for that first swig of her coffee from my thermos! ;-)
FWIW, we are now retired only 4 miles from the LA line -- in Texas -- across the line from Vivian, LA...
Guess not!
Hahahahahaha
Hey, I’m a Pats fan and glad to see Peyton has feet of clay after all. Still, you gotta admit I scored first with the comment and New Orleans is still New Orleans with a rat mayor.
First! (but wrong)
What??? New Orleans will no longer be “Chocoate”? Somebody better tell Mayor Ray Nagin.
No, it’s not good. He is Mary Landrieu’s brother. That means the Landrieus are not loathed in N.O. as they are in the rest of the State. Could be a good sign for Mary’s re-election.
But, then, the city of New Orleans itself is, like most major cities, predominantly black. Blacks love the Landrieu family.
“Now why would a supposedly conservative Republican do that?”
Hmmm....good que$stion. Who know$. $omeone $hould a$k her.
thanks, but that didn’t answer my question.
N.O. will always have a rat mayor because it is filled with rats. That’s why I live in the country 90 miles away.
Yes. This same Landrieu lost to ray nagin for the same office 4 years ago.
