Cat killer gets youth detention

A Melbourne teenager who senselessly killed a beloved family cat has been sentenced to youth detention.

The boy was one of two 15-year-olds who tied a rope around the cat's neck and hung it from a bridge in Melbourne's outer north in April 2008.

A children's court magistrate said on Tuesday he was outraged, mortified and sickened by the attack.

He said the killing was one of the most shocking things he had experienced in his 20 years on the bench.

A sentencing report had recommended the boy not be detained, but the magistrate said the community was concerned and outraged by the killing and it warranted a youth justice order.

He ordered one of the boys serve four months at a youth justice centre. The second boy was released on probation without conviction for six months.

This is a valid reason why a juvenile potential serial killer should go to juvie for killing a 20 year old house cat.

Deserves more than some juvenile facility time.

People think killing an animal is no big deal. But that's how Jeffrey Dahmer started out.

I don't like cats too much, still common sense tells me a real year in a real can is appropriate.

I wonder what the judge would have given him if he had been a member of the Religion of Peace(TM)?

He's GOT to be kidding! In 20 years??? THAT was one of the most shocking??? Where does that guy live - under his desk??? He must REALLY be sheltered.

Children’s court magistrate. Probably spends 95% of his time dealing with vandalism and shoplifting. Yes, there are more serious crimes committed by juveniles in Australia, but not really all that many, and those tend to get directed to particular magistrates of the Children’s Court.

I’ve had a fair bit to do with it over the years. They pick who gets particular cases rather carefully.

I don't in any way condone animal cruelty/killing, and it does presage more violent future crimes in the perpetrator, however, if this is the "most shocking" crime that the magistrate has adjudicated in 20 years, he has led a sheltered career.

Thought appreciated, but I tend not to ping “downers” - too many KPL’ers hate them.

Beyond that, I’m glad this a-hole is getting some time in the pokey, and hope some sense is knocked into him before he graduates to humans.

And that's how Dennis Rader (BTK) started out.

He began strangling dogs and cats, as a child. He would bind strays with baling wire and hang them in a barn.
