Poll reveals 2009 hunger rate in US [18.2%]
Press TV ^ | January 31, 2010

A new survey indicates that nearly one in five US households could not afford to buy enough food at least once during the past year.

An anti-hunger group said the poll found 18.2 percent of households reported "food hardship" -- lacking money to buy enough food -- in 2009.

The figure reflects a higher percentage than the government's "food insecurity" rating of 14.6 percent of households, or 49 million people, in 2008.

"There are no hunger-free areas of America," Jim Weill of the Food Research and Action Center was quoted as saying by Reuters.

He added that he hoped President Barack Obama would exempt public nutrition programs from a proposed three-year freeze on domestic spending.

Obama has announced a goal to ending childhood hunger by 2015. A year ago, he backed a $1 billion-a-year increase in school lunch and other child nutrition programs.

If the poor who eat way too much, and I mean not just a little too much but waddling 50 inch waistline too much, shared with those who had too little, would that solve the problem?

If you starve in America it’s virtually sure to be your own fault.

Carbohydrates are much cheaper than most proteins. Having said that, I recall a catchprase a comic used to use on BET Comicview: “Food stamps is money!”

“one in five US households could not afford to buy enough food at least once during the past year.”.............................

So hunger happened at least once for one in five???

Geez, I can’t buy food a couple of times a week if I can’t get to an ATM machine and get some cash!

I wonder if I’m in their target group???

Clearly Zer0 is going to have to come up with another food stamp stimulous program!

Are they factoring in college students?

Does eating Ramen noodles count as “hungry?” (it should).

In my 56 years, I have never seen an American begging for food.

Food is almost as plentiful as air in America. Even after 45 years of food stamps, one in five goes hungry?

C’mon.

The feds want to regulate air with "Cap & Trade."

Food will be regulated by "Fat & Trade."

Some of those polls are very, very loose in their definitions of "hunger". For example: worrying about having enough money for food, skipping an occassional meal to make you money last, or (my favorite) restricted food choices because of you budget - so if you eat rice and beans too many times in a month you are counted as hungry, even if you end up throwing away some of them every night because you have more than you can eat.

Of course, all of these types of studies are done to establish a precedent for later government involvement with the intention of creating some kind of agency to look after the problem i.e. spend more money.

However, I wonder what their study would find if we rounded up the 30 million illegals in the US and deported them. All you have to do is visit the local food bank and see who is emptying the panties. Here in North Texas, it's a constant stream of illegals with their anchor babies. That's why I quit giving to any food drive. The food goes directly to illegals and helps sustain them until Juan McCain can ram through some type of amnesty bill so they can go on welfare.

Food banks are nothing more that resupply depots for the Army of La Reconquista.

that is such crap...why do they lie like that?

no one in America knows wtf real hunger is

we are such a weak stupid and neurotic peoples...always beating ourselves up for being the product of successful folks who established this nation and west civilization in general

I am reminded of the recent rescue of a little girl, trapped in the wreckage of a building in Haiti, for 15 days with no water or food, and I give Thanks for her life, and for what I have.

How many people ‘living in hunger’ in this country have cable TV? Satellite? Cell phones?

Take it from anyone who was poor 40 years ago: Poverty ain’t what it used to be.
