The Washington Post ^ | 1/30/10 | Carol D. Leonnig

Posted on 01/30/2010 7:11:31 PM PST by steve-b

The conservative activist accused this week in a plot to tamper with telephones in the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) admitted to the scheme Friday....

Federal prosecutors allege that James O'Keefe helped carry out a plot in which two friends impersonated telephone repairmen to get access to Landrieu's office in downtown New Orleans. O'Keefe, 25, waited inside the office and used his cellphone to record his two colleagues saying that the senator's phone was not receiving calls, according to charges unsealed Tuesday....

If convicted, O'Keefe could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. Under a judge's order, he is required to reside with his parents in New Jersey pending future court hearings.

Convicted of recording his own two colleagues, from whom he had obtained permission, saying that the senator's phone was not receiving calls? I don't think this is going to fly.

“he is required to reside with his parents in New Jersey”

New Jersey??? I think I’d plead guilty and ask for the electric chair.

The conservative activist accused this week in a plot to tamper with telephones in the office of Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) admitted to the scheme Friday.

Well, this matter is continuing to develop. But the lead paragraph of this Compost article appears to be a flat out lie.

Yes, O'Keefe has admitted to a "plot" of sorts, but he has NOT admitted to any plot to "tamper with phones." And if you read the rest of this brief article, it does not confirm that malicious and misleading charge.

I'm getting awfully sick of these lies from these high-paid liars. I thought that the Washington Post was marginally better than the NY Times, but evidently not.

The statement by the WP is actionable libel, since they know it’s false (he denied committing any crime,) and their statement otherwise is clearly malicious.

Where is the ACLU? Or any news orgs who care about journalists? This thing is rotten.

He didn't admit to a "plot". He simply said he was there to observe the phone system operation and to film that observation. Some of the writers at the WarshPost are distressed with Mr. O'Keefe's presence and have a tendency to misrepresent what went on and what he said.

Moon Landrieu's corrupt daughter is in real trouble here. Even though I think all that happened was that her office managers pulled a wire that triggered a busy signal for inbound calls (while leaving the staff able to make outbound calls) she lied about what was wrong with the systems.

Now she's set up to be taking some citizens to court along about campaign season. No doubt other Democrat candidates are going to be concerned with this bit of her stupidity interfering with the way the public perceives them.

Up to 25 Representatives could lose the election just because of Moon Landrieu's daughter's arrogance!

This is what passes for journalism? Even for the comPost it’s pretty bad.

O’Keefe, who is charged with entering federal property on false pretenses, said in a statement Friday that he undertook the project “as an investigative journalist.”

This is the charge which he admitted. A quick reading of the article would lead one to believe that he had admitted to “tampering with phones”. They neglect to point out that he was completely in a public area.

If this is prosecuted, it is clearly political.

Meh. The Compost is still pining about the old ‘Watergate Days’. They can’t let it go. It’s like an old cheerleader from HS who still does the ‘rah-rahs’ when she’s 50.

Read the article, it doesn’t appear O’Keefe confessed to a plot to tamper with the phones. He said admitted he filmed the other guys he was with and taht he was trying to discover if Landrieu was avoiding calls.

I’m guessing the idea was, they go there and say there have been reports the phones aren’t working.

The staff was expected to say “No, we are avoiding calls because all these people are calling complaining and we’re tired of hearing it”.

Now, is that recording such a dastardly act, deserving of 10 years in jail? I say no.

Actually he was accused of a plot to tamper with phones. The Washington Post simply fails to state that it is only the media which is accusing him of this! :)

If I were on this jury I would definitely vote to acquit. We pay for these phones and as a result we should have a complete, absolute and irrefutable right to listen to any and all conversations which involve them.

..what was he after by tapping the phones?...proof of the payoff she got for supporting Obama care?....maybe she got much more than we know....like cash in her pocket.

....the good news is that this ought to shake up some libs in Washington...let them know that there is another form of investigative journalism out there now...they can’t rely on their puppets in the MSM to totally cover for them any more.

They certainly were not taking phone calls.

I had been tempted to call the capital police and ask for them to investigate the disappearance of my Senator and her staff.

I had senator Stab-me-now on speed dial for a while, they took my calls but then promptly hung up. Same with Carl Lefty Levin. Bunch of, well you know.
