A year after his historic election as the nations first African-American president, Barack Obama is at a crossroad. In his State of the Union address Wednesday, President Obama aims to deliver a game changing message, one capable of convincing Americans that his policies will create jobs, curb spending, restore prosperity and encourage national unity.
Obama supporters Harry and Elysa Davis worry that with the brutal defeat in Massachusetts, voter discontent over his healthcare overhaul running high and the recessions effects cutting deep, the presidents trademark message of hope may fall on deaf ears.
Consider the poll last week by the Washington Post and ABC News. People were asked a standard question about how much confidence they had in President Obama to make the right decisions for the nations future.
53% reported just some and none at all.
So much for polls! Here on the campus of Cal State University San Bernardino a knot of African-American students are discussing the findings of two new polls released this week that show Mr. Obama is still viewed as the most trusted political figure to solve the nations problems.
We are at a strange moment. People are angry and frustrated. People who dont have jobs need someone to blame, said Gregg Khalsa. It took George W. Bush eight years and two elections to trash this country, now people expect President Obama to fix the mess in less than a year. Its not fair.
The wideranging Public Strategies Inc. survey indicates that while trust in government continues to slip, 54 percent of voters still have faith in the president, if not the party he represents.
Yet another study released this week found that despite the bad economy, Blacks assessments about the state of Black progress in America have improved more dramatically during the past two years than at any time in the past quarter century, according to a comprehensive Pew Research Center survey on race.
Students gathered at an Obama Phone Bank believe Mr. Obamas election as the nations first Black president appears to be the spur for this sharp rise in optimism among African-Americans.
From race relations to local community engagement people are taking their concerns and ideas to town hall meetings, to the streets and back to the dinner table, said Khalsa who is biracial.
The Pew telephone survey of 2,884, including 812 African-Americans was conducted from October 28 to November 30, 2009.
In the teeth of what may be the deepest recession since the Great Depression, nearly twice as many Blacks now (39%) as in 2007 (20%) say that the situation of Black people in this country is better than it was five years earlier.
An overwhelming share of Blacks 95% -- have a favorable opinion of President Obama. This number has remained in the stratosphere among Blacks throughout his first year in office.
Among whites, Obama has seen his popularity ratings decline significantly from a high of 76% just before he was inaugurated to 56% in the current survey.
When it comes to employment rates, Blacks have been hit harder than whites by the recession and so-far jobless recovery. But when it comes to perceptions about the economy, the opposite is true: whites have turned sharply negative since the recession began, while Black perceptions have held steady.
Beyond the naysayers, religious fundamentalists, blogs, cable TV shows (birthers, truthers and tea partiers) there is hope for America, said Khalsa.
There were no polls during the Great Depression still people saw the need to come together as a country. So like that era of uncertainty - this too will pass.
Most of them just can’t get past looking at skin color alone.
The relationship between over 90% of Blacks and the Democrat Plantation is virtually the same as Battered Wife Syndrome. Too bad the GOP is too scared to stage an intervention.
Look for race relations to take a downturn this year. People are getting less happy with Obama, and his black supporters will take criticism of Obama personally.
A black friend of mine told me that it was the best SOU he had heard.
Blacks know where zero’s loyalty lies.
On this point I must disagree with you as I fully believe Obama knows quite a bit about economics. At least from the standpoint of how to collapse an economy so fast that people will look to the Government to save them and embrace communism.
Obama is a communist to his core. He follows every precept of communism and uses the tactics and steps that have for years been published by the communists on how to overthrow free societies.
Adolf Hitler and Karl Marx brought us nothing but death and bloodshed, yet both still have their die-hard followers. If the worst of the worst can have followers even as reality thrashes them, it shouldn’t be surprising that a snot-nosed rookie like Obama still has his believers.
“An overwhelming share of Blacks 95% — have a favorable opinion of President Obama.”
Please don’t let me hear Republicans say this election cycle “If we just tweak our message and ‘reach out” to blacks, we can peel a significant number of them off.”
The silly part about all this is that Obama at one point in his political career had to prove that he was “authentically Black” or “down with the struggle”. I guess he succeeded because Barak is leading his most loyal constituent group right over the cliff.
Has your friend ever heard any other SOTU?
Ethnic pride is one thing—but this mindless idiocy goes beyond any rational loyalty or solidarity—it’s pretty much a jump the shark moment—and when the riots start after BO loses, that will be the icing on the cake. Any other group this self-deluded cannot be taken seriously—and I don’t think this is an exception—Stupid is as stupid does.
And it’s not just the mindless devotion to BO—it’s the mindless devotion to a political mindset of “rights” without any responsibilities, of one way “hate speech” and “hate crimes”, of basically a never-ending guilt trip and stealthy and not-so-stealthy reparations.
Don’t expect me to be on board with that, or to have any respect for those who are.
With globalist socialism? I don't think most do. I saw a post-SOTU focus group on Fox News and 1 lady eagerly said "he'd doing the best he can under the circumstances he inherited". That's just a recycled MSM talking point. I'd say it's sad blind devotion like the OJ thing. Based on paranoia that whites just have it in for blacks.
manc:
Remember I mentioned ignorance. Many in the black community are uneducated and brainwashed. Black kids go to public schools in the inner city and from day one receive the message that they have a grievance against America. The message is that because there was slavery America is no good.
Leftist teachers, many of whom are brainwashed incompetents, revised history books and degenerate hip hop heroes make an impact on black American kids. But that is not the whole story. There are black conservatives who vote Republican. They get no coverage from the media. That is why I was so glad to see Glenn Beck devote a couple of his shows to black conservatives.
Every one of those conservatives indicated that they have paid a price for being conservative. It infuriates me that as an old man I paid a price because of my race when I was young. I could blame that on white racists. Now far too many of my people are becoming black racists. Both groups are despicable as far as I an concerned, even though our kids are trained to be that way.
Please do not overlook the impact of the black prostitutes in the Congrssional Black Caucus. You mentioned MLK. Some of these people marched with him to achieve the society King envisioned in his famous speech. They betrayed MLK, black people and America.
I can not conclude these remarks without mentioning the thinly diguised racism of some of the posters on this thread. For the record I think that they are contemptible too.
