Before the votes were even counted, her fellow Democrats had compiled a list of reasons why Martha Coakley had struggled: anemic retail politics, a blind-eye to shifting momentum and an inexplicable appearance on a sports talk radio show that led her to misidentify a Red Sox star.
There was truth to them all. But they also glossed over an obstacle that received far less attention in her losing bid for the Senate: a glass ceiling that remains almost impenetrable, even in the blue state of Massachusetts.
To get an idea of how mind-bending the gender dynamics in this campaign were, consider this:
If a male attorney general and former prosecutor had been running against a woman whod posed nude for Cosmopolitan magazine and whose law practice consisted mainly of real estate closings, would he have been the one reduced to praying for a squeaker victory? Would she have even gotten elected to the state Senate?
No and no are the probable answers. But it is an illustration of the kind of double standard voters apply to female candidates a double standard that some longtime womens advocates see in the success of Republican Scott Brown, whose college-aged centerfold and lesser professional success didnt prevent him from capturing Ted Kennedys old Senate seat from the Democrats.
The lack of success of female candidates in Massachusetts compared with, say, nearby Maine, where both senators are women, is striking.

The editorial's writers sort of have a point when you think about it.
Morons in the People's Republic of Taxachusetts persistently elect losers like rum-soaked Teddy, gigolo Lurch and Bawney Fwank. So why not a female bubble-headed libtard?
How much do you wanna bet that Ms. Cummings and Ms. Lovely have a “special” relationship?
Exactly.
Great points that bear repeating! In addition, where was the ‘glass ceiling’ when Coakley became Attorney General?
Calling the guy who posts the picture with caption: Oh no! not this shit again.
Same argument could be made about why we haven't had Republican Senators from Massachusetts, when we have continued to have Republican US Senatorsv from Maine.
Kaleefornia has Boxer and Feinstein. Where’s a glass ceiling when you need one?
If the point the writers are making is that professed liberals are hypocrites I suppose I can agree.
With these people. it's never enough.
It was pure sexism for sure.
She is a stupid BE-itch and her type should never be in charge of anything
Croakley wasn't beaten by a glass ceiling or sexism. She was beaten by a combination of her own complacency, arrogance and incompetence and she was beaten fair and square by an opponent who ran a focused, first-rate campaign.
What a bun h of transparent B.S.! She lost because she was/is an arrogant DemoLiberal, who think she knows better, *is* better, than the rest of us common rabble. If she lost because Massachusetts is so full of chauvinist pigs, Ho’d she ever win the primary so handily? Hmmmmm...Just look at all those chauvinist male pig Democrats, that were all out of the state the the day of the last primary....who knew?
Typical Liberal tactic: Divide and play the victim card!
Men against women, blacks against whites, citizens versus illegal immigrants...Straights against Homosexuals....
DemoLiberals are all about dividing America and playing one group(s) off of another. “Big Tent” my ass! It’s always pitting us against each other and claiming to be the “understanding ones”, the “unifiers”, when they are the ones who depend on making us all into separate and manageable divisions.
They thrive on it. They are the ones in any group, always whispering in peoples ears, “Are you gonna *take* that?”....”I got your back!”.
“she and her party were perceived as being out of touch with the common everyday person”
Not so much out of touch as they just don’t care what the everyday person thinks.

Conversely,we should vote for her because she’s a woman.
Brilliant!
.
Mass gals sure didn’t seem to mind not having a female VP. They will get over this just fine.
