Gibbs: "It never ceases to amaze that in times of amazing human suffering, somebody says something that could be so utterly stupid, but, it, like clockwork, happens with some regularity."

Amateur hour continues at the Obama White House.

Robertson is a fool and his comments were stupid...

Turning against Pat Robertson and his supporters by calling them stupid from the podium of the White House is probably just as foolish. The standard answer to questions of this sort is ‘no comment’, or ‘We don’t pay attention to individual remarks’, or ‘his remarks were unfortunate’.

You don’t infer the man is stupid… Even though he clearly is. The White House podium should have a little couth, but Gibbs is just as likely to make stupid remarks as Robertson is. And his response to the question is proof of that.

“One can reject the Bible, but one cannot claim to be a Christian and then say that God doesn’t punish those who don’t follow him, and those who turn away from him.”

Sounds as though you agree with that which is attributed to Robertson.

For those of us raised in The South, long ago, when I was a child, listening to the elders sitting on the porch, spitting tobacco juices and mulling over the events of the day’s news, I remember that whenever there was a huge natural disaster somewhere, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, etc., the invariable comment was made that, “There must be a lot of sinning going on down there.” The Bible itself says that God would use plagues, famines and other natural disasters to punish and bring his people back to the fold. In light of this, Robertson’s comment wasn’t so far fetched as one might first take it. Indeed, some could well say that Katrina or the Boxing Day Tsunami was of the same origin. The ways of nature conform to God’s will, and I would not belittle anyone for believing such ways....................

I do NOT agree that God caused the earthquake in Haiti or anywhere else for that matter but I do believe that the sins of the inhabitants of whatever land is stricken by an earthquake or any other natural disaster does.
"And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants." (Leviticus 18:25)
Blaming God for our choices is wrong and I believe Pat to be wrong every time he does that. My heart goes out to all the people of Haiti because God knows I've done my share of sinning in my life and to date I have had to pay the price for those sins. I can really sympathize with them especially after having lived through Ike. The point is, the people that live in Haiti choose to ignore God's principles. They practice witchcraft, voodoo, Islam, and just about every other form of demonic worship they can. The earth cannot continue to live with such debauchery and as the scripture above says she will vomit such people up.

Folks don't like it? Repent. But will they? Scripture also tells us...

"And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds." (Revelation 16:11)
Folks never seem to learn do they? Now that God's been blamed and not the inhabitants of the land I'm waiting for Bush to get blamed. After all isn't everything Bush's fault?

Prayers to God for the Haitians. I pray that He will show mercy on those that are still alive and pray that they will experience a speedy recovery. I hope the Haitians are open to receive that.

As Forrest Gump would say... stupid is as stupid does... even an idiot (Gibbs) gets it right every once in a while...

But again, when does Gibbs even have to comment on something a private citizen says, as idiotic as it may be?

And how much have you financially supported the people of Haiti? Pat Robertson has done more, in practical terms, for the people of Haiti than most.

Have you seen the actual video or heard the audio of what Pat Robertson has said? Or are you simply reacting to the commentaries, which always hate on high-profile Christians?

It was an absurd thing to say. Everybody know the place is corrupt and voodoo-ridden, we just don't talk about it in police society. We roll our eyes and head for Punta Cana.

What bugged me was the basic ignorance. Robertson said the Haitians overthrew French rule and Napoleon III before making their pact with the devil. Haitian independence occurred in 1804, and Napoleon III was born in 1808.

Why does the White House even expend to effort to comment on idiots like Robertson. Makes them look just as foolish.

It's a chance to take a shot at a "religious leader". They're not going to miss out on that.

Mr. Robertson's statement (which I have heard) is stunning to say the least. As I said to my husband, if someone hasn't been to Haiti, they might think that this is really a devastating event. Sadly, take away the bodies in the streets, the maimed, the bereaved, the orphaned and widowed and it looks pretty much the same as it usually does.

The true evil is that it has been an island in a perpetual state of rape since it became a colony — either by the colonialists or its previous ruler, DuVallier. The poverty looks pretty much the same and has for centuries. The true evil is allowing it to continue and perpetrating the misery that has been allowed to incubate and reproduce.

The Transcript:

They were under the heel of the French, you know Napoleon the third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said ‘We will serve you if you will get us free from the prince.’ True story. And so the devil said, ‘Ok it’s a deal.’ And they kicked the French out. The Haitians revolted and got something themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after another,” Robertson said.

The Libs are having a field day with this, of course, but I’m surprised even Freepers didn’t bother to look for the entire context of what Robertson said. He may be tactless or have a wacky view of history but in the SAME statement he also said that Christians should do whatever they can to help Haiti, pray for them, and pray that some good comes from this tragedy.

What Pat Robertson said was stupid, but I think the point of Robertson’s comment that is lost on many, is that God uses tragedies such as these to bring all of us closer to Him.

You’re right. Even FReepers love to hate on high-profile Christians, usually before they’ve even had a chance to review what said high-profile Christian has ACTUALLY said.

Most people, for example, don’t realize that Pat Robertson has had a ministry in Haiti for quite some time now, doing practical work to help the decent people of Haiti.

“...which always hate on high-profile Christians?”

Christians would be foolish not to come out against what Robertson said.

I mean, talk about fodder for the left.

I’ll be generous and say that it was AT LEAST ill-timed, if not a horrible, horrible thing to say at a time when we need to be encouraging people to help.

To me, it doesn’t even matter what Pat said, whether he’s right or not, I would say the same about Rush’s comments.

There will be plenty of time after the fact to discuss the political and/or religious reasons for this. Right now, let’s just get the people rescued and bury the dead and avoid an even further catastrophe. Then everybody can weigh in. Right now, there’s bigger fish to fry. This whole pissing match looks real foolish in context of the tragedy that is folding in front of us.

>> One can reject the Bible, but one cannot claim to be a Christian and then say that God doesn’t punish those who don’t follow him, and those who turn away from him. If Robertson errs, he errs by speculating on the specifics. But he can hardly be said to be mean or hateful or outside the bounds of reasonableness. Unless one rejects the Judeo-Christian God to begin with.

One can agree, in principle, that God can punish non-believers with natural disasters — and still think Pat Robertson is an obnoxious buffoon. Regardless of whether Robertson is right or wrong in his assessment ... kicking someone when they’re down is not a Christian value.

WWJD? I don’t believe for a SECOND that Christ would’ve uttered those words to the suffering people of Haiti — in effect, “well, you had it coming”. Robertson’s intemperate reaction reflects poorly on Christ and His followers, and he should apologize for the poor timing of his remarks.

He should’ve shown Christ’s love by comforting the suffering. The book of Job states outright that tragedies can befall the righteous, and that it is God’s will that we comfort, not condemn, the aggrieved.

The only thing that needs to be said to Gibbs:

“Jeremiah Wright claimed 9/11 was biblical retribution for America’s sins. Is that any different from Pat Robertson’s comments?”
