Some people just need help for a few weeks because of some situation.

Some situation, like the loss of a job? Try unemployment.
Sorry-no slack given.
I've had hard times as a child and as a young adult, and I survived-without welfare. There are enough soup kitchens and various other charitable organizations in this country to sustain someone's family through "a few weeks".
They need not suckle off the taxpayer's teat for their livelihood.

Welfare-Americans.

Fellow Texans, my solution is simple:

I would offer a free bus ride and a $2000 cash card upon arrival in California, Wash. DC, or any other liberal sewer, to any current Texas welfare recipient, conditional upon them remaining at the destination. Failure to comply and returning to Texas without proof of income or financial support would result in the issuance of a felony warrant.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

I note that there is much discussion re what those on Food Stamps in Texas purchase....

Do ya think there is any fraud in the program? Lottery tickets, booze, and drugs come to mind....Just wondering....

May I refine your most excellent idea?

I would offer a free bus ride and a $2000 cash card upon arrival in California, Wash. DC, or any other liberal sewer, to any current Texas welfare recipient liberal/socialist/communist, conditional upon them remaining at the destination.

That should solve the biggest problem....

I agree, but if the State could convince them to buy bulk surplus item, it would probably be to their benefit, and my teach them that it’s a good idea.

/yeah, I know. fat chance.

In the US, since before the Great Depression, we have had the problem that our farmers are over productive.

Tah was before modern farming and today's communication not to mention the futures markets.

Most farmers sell their crops long before they are harvested. What is in place now, it simply a grandfathered political program...

Government cheese is given away not sold for food stamps.

So Texas does a lousy job helping illegals and layabouts defraud American taxpayers! Gee whiz, what a SHAME! I know! Lets send a few Navy vessels to Haiti and have them pick up a few hundred thousand new “applicants!” Even better, they can transport back a hundred thousand dead to vote for Coakley next week!

only enrolls 55 percent of those eligible to receive it, based on census income data

Census income is not the only qualifying factor

IMHO, foodstamps should not be able to be used on “luxury food”, like steaks, shrimp, pre-prepared packaged food, etc,

Some years back there was a thread on Food Stamp abuse and someone posted about what they saw at a grocery store that infuriated her - as it would any of us. The lady was behind a Food Stamp recipient who tried to buy some cans of cat food. The clerk said they weren't covered, so the recipient went back and got a package of shrimp. The lady mentioned that the recipient's cat was eating better than her as she couldn't afford that item.

There is no downside for the retailer.

Thanks for the correction. :-)

The bad thing about SS is that it was put into the general fund so it could be sucked out by every politician with a special-interest group to appease.

Because it is a welfare Ponzi scheme.

The storage problem, very much true. When I was living in the city, I had a bottom half of a refrigerator. That was all.

How am I supposed to get stuff that will last, when all I have is a small room?

Spot on! I more I think about free lunches at school the angrier I get. It’s simply amazing to me that parents can’t pack a lunch for their children. I’m 66 and remember making my own baloney sandwiches, and if not baloney, potted meat. My mother made us make our own and I didn’t suffer any psychological trauma either. And please, no arguments about these morons being unable to become an Einstein without their free lunches. This is the most self-indulgent and sated generation in the history of mankind and Obama is President because he’s what we deserve. This isn’t surprising as the parasites now outnumber the hosts.

That's the percent of change chart. Places that are normally prosperous or at least solid are being devastated.

This is the chance of a lifetime for Republicans with a clean, clear economic message but so far we are mucking around in social issues. We are making it a chance of a lifetime for Democrats.

Florida has low wages and no concentrations of high-paying professions. Most of the affluent either moved from other parts of the states to retire or from other countries. It’s entire economy is based disproportionately on tourism, real estate, and agriculture. The state does well when folks from elsewhere decided to sell the family business and lay out the cabbage for houses/restaurants, etc, but at times like this it gets hammered (see also Florida in the 1970s).

"Grocery stores are only compensated a percentage of the cost for groceries..."

Where did you find that information? I've never read that before. I know of some stores that have prices quite a bit lower than even WalMart and I would imagine that most of their customers are food stamp recipients. I don't see how they would possibly stay in business that way.

I'm looking at the parallels to Arizona.

The Grand Canyon State had some major industries that the Government forced off the coast during and after WWII for defense reasons. It had some bases. It had the retirees, agriculture and mining and a little regional banking. And it had unlimited opportunities.

During the '80's we had a huge influx of bright young professionals from the inland colleges looking to establish themselves and make a life. Our own educational system was mediocre but these kids were a gold mine and we know it. Our Reaganite movement was a concerted effort to get the hell out of their way.

We, like Florida, outran ourselves on expansion. Even when we were in the middle of the boom a common joke was that "all Arizona growth was in growth" but we still have a solid base. Those bright young professionals are a little older now and rounder and a tad less aggressive but they are still a huge talent pool if we can keep our asses out of their way.

It concerns me somewhat that they ain't bitchin' as much as they were last time and are more fatalistic. I want them to stand up and start kicking butt.
