Youth Unemployment at 52.2% Post "Stimulus"
Americans for Tax Reform ^ | Monday, September 28, 2009 | Tim Andrews

The New York Post yesterday ran with this staggering story on newly released figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

"The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time."

There is a simple solution to youth unemployment. A “Training Wage”, that is several dollars below the minimum wage for people under a certain age, when most likely they don’t have a family to support.

Sorry to hear that. Were in the same age bracket, and I can't imagine the horror of having to find another career during your 40s or 50s. So far I have survived heavy cuts in my industry, but its a long way to go till the next Reagan, so who knows what will happen in the next couple of years.

Good luck to you.

"Minimum wage hike by the Dems also contributed to this."

Of course it has, but getting dhimmis to admit or change this will NEVER happen because of the long union $$ they're getting.

We’re making life as uncomfortable for him as possible so he DOES find productive things to do

That's about the smartest thing you can do.

If you'll indulge me for a minute.... I had just finished my freshman year in college and was about a whisker from failing out of engineering. I wanted to do something that wasn't "Quite so hard", blah blah blah.

My dad got me a job as a "Stripper". No, not that kind. I stripped furniture off of fully loaded trucks from the manufacturer, and moved it into a distribution warehouse. I did this for 10-14 hours a day, in 140+ heat on the trucks. Great money, but miserable work. Used to drink 2 gallons of water a shift, and sweat it all out as soon as it went in.

It was a great lesson. Taught me that it's far easier to work with your mind than with your back. Dad was right, although I'd never admit it to him. lol! I went back and finished my engineering degree, and the rest is history.

All that work got me into the best shape of my life, though. :-) Wish that I could still pick up a couch on my shoulder and toss it around like I used to.

Obviously, gone are the days that a teen could find a job in less than a day....I never had a problem finding jobs in the early 1980’s....and that was before the Reagan Recovery kicked in. So...you know it is really really bad now....

Two things that would improve the situation....

End Illegal Alienism....and any work-immigration program. You cannot create a job in the United States of America by giving it to an Illegal Alien

End Free Trade....we no longer manufacture anything of value....Made in China means your kid is staying home and not working. You cannot create a job in the United States of America by shipping it to Communist China.

Just these two things would get younger people back to work...and quickly

Yeah, lets try Smoot-Hawley all over again. Brilliant idea.

The problem is the minimum wage. Cut the minimum wage back down to 5 dollars an hour, and you’ll see folks making money again.

LOL! I wish you could, too. My couch needs moving. ;)

Great story; we’re on the same wavelength. :)

Thanks for the well-wishes, they are appreciated. My wife starts nursing school in a month, already has her CNA. I’m getting my teaching certificate. I’ve coached in middle/high school previously as a non-teaching coach, so teaching seemed like a good path. Locally, there are jobs in nursing and teaching. We’re doing what we can and hoping for the best!

One of my adult children was complaining about the market last night- he got mad when I told him this was the ‘hope and change’ he voted for . Not to mention when he’s my age he’ll be paying 70%+ of his to pay for all the bread and circuses and free cheese for illegals now.(either via taxes or inflation AND taxes, but he will pay)

Does he know he’s probably already paying around 50% in various taxes, fees, surcharges and such?

In my opinion, the quickest way to stimulate the economy is to drop the minimum wage to $4.50 an hour.

What about dropping minimum wage altogether? Minimum wages are a joke and have caused more problems than they ever solved.

I agree. It was actually put in place to protect union jobs from competition.

Because prices would take a little while to adjust, it would probably be best to stair-step it's demise. First go to $4.50 then after a couple of years take it down to $3 and eventually do away with it.
