Obama ties failed plane attack to al Qaeda [Whew, I was getting worried!]

HONOLULU (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama said on Friday it appeared the man suspected of trying to bomb a Detroit-bound plane on Christmas was a member of al Qaeda and had been trained and equipped by the Islamic militant network.

Defending his administration's counterterrorism efforts amid scathing Republican criticism, Obama said he received preliminary results of the reviews he ordered into air travel screening procedures and a "terrorist watchlist system" and expected final results in the days to come.

Obama, who is on vacation in Hawaii, had called for an immediate study of what he termed "human and systemic failures" that allowed 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to get on a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on December 25 allegedly with explosives in his clothes.

"The investigation into the Christmas Day incident continues, and we're learning more about the suspect," Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, posted on the White House website on Friday local time.

"It appears that he joined an affiliate of al Qaeda, and that this group -- al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula -- trained him, equipped him with those explosives and directed him to attack that plane headed for America," Obama said.

The president's comments were his most explicit to date tying the suspect with the al Qaeda group.

Because he’s completely incapable of keeping his mouth shut for any period of time.

He acts stupidly— all the time.

Pretty big allegation.

Didn’t he just cast judgment on an alleged defendant? Didn’t he just violate his right to a fair and impartial trial?

Mr. Obama noted that he used the term “war” in his inaugural speech on his first day in office. “On that day, I also made it very clear, our nation is at war against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred, and that we will do whatever it takes to defeat them and defend our country, even as we uphold the values that have always distinguished America among nations,” he said. “And make no mistake, that’s exactly what we’ve been doing.”

Wow! He used the w word almost a year ago. There is so much wrong with this statement that I don't know where to begin.

Obama wants to “strengthen our partnership with the Yemeni government.” Oh boy. I can hardly wait.

I guess he's learning stuff we knew on day one.

If you missed it this morning, on Fox and Friends a book out called “screener.” She talks of TSA telling her or other screeners “if you keep your mouth shut you will do just fine.”

She said 400 more body scanners will be placed in airports but that leaves 19000 more airports with nada.

One instance, a guy came through with hollow soles (shoe bomber like)and a laptop, forgive me if this is wrong, with a alarm clock in the middle. Another time someone got through with a fake IED hidden in a book. It was a group of people who go around and try to get through security who hid the IED in the book.

I am leaving for the day and this transcript is not available right now but worth checking when it is.

Book: Screener

Annette Murphy is a screener at a category one airport. Her love for her job and country has her in a dilemma as she endures the problems screeners are facing. She quickly becomes aware of an airline employees strange behavior and the appearance of foreigners appearing to study the airport. Reporting her concerns, but having already been labeled a troublemaker, she succumbs to loss of faith in her superiors and chain of command. A screener is assaulted, a federal investigation is begun, and she begins to question the validity of background checks for government officials and airline employees sometimes taking over a year to clear and thus giving access to sensitive security information to possible terrorists. A terrorist plot is in progress when Annette and her friends stumble onto them accidentally and are taken hostage. Will her worst fears come to pass?

"Since most of us figured it out the day it happened, he appears rather slow."

My point exactly.

With his brain synapses running at the speed of molasses, it's amazing that he ever came to ANY conclusion at all, let alone the correct one.

It's the first miracle of 2010.

Those pesky facts kept getting in the way of a good crisis to exploit.

Someone should verify the actual context of the quote and make sure that he wasn't referring to Tea Party protesters...
