Al Qaeda’s Yemen Connection, America and the Global Islamic Jihad

December 30, 2009 — The attempt to destroy Northwest Airlines flight 253 en route from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day underscores the growing ambition of al Qaeda's Yemen franchise, which has grown from a largely Yemeni agenda to become a player in the global Islamic jihad in the last year. Since merging with the al Qaeda franchise in Saudi Arabia last January and renaming itself Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), it has stepped up operations in Yemen itself, struck into Saudi Arabia, and now operates on the global stage. The weak Yemeni government of President Ali Abdallah Salih, which has never fully controlled the country and now faces a host of growing problems, will need significant American support to defeat AQAP.

Al Qaeda has long been active in Yemen, the original homeland of Osama bin Laden's family, and one of its first major terror attacks was conducted in Aden in 2000, when an al Qaeda cell nearly sank the USS Cole. A year ago, the al Qaeda franchises in Saudi Arabia and Yemen merged after the Saudi branch had been effectively repressed by the Saudi authorities under the leadership of Deputy Interior Minister Prince Muhammad bin Nayif. The new AQAP showed its claws last August, when it almost assassinated the prince with a suicide bomber who had passed through at least two airports on the way to his attempt on Nayif.

The attack on the Amsterdam-Detroit flight also shows that al Qaeda remains obsessed with striking the American airline industry, a target it has gone after repeatedly since 1999. If AQAP has now been told by the al Qaeda core leadership to take on the job, we can probably assume that other al Qaeda franchises in North Africa, Iraq, Southeast Asia and elsewhere have also been pressed to attack.

Dana Perino is another Wyoming native. The original Perinos immigrated from Italy to work in the Cambria coal mines north of Newcastle, Wy. Her grandfather, Leo still ranches in the area. When we had our sawmill in Wyo., we bought timber from Leo. I remember seeing Dana when she was a little girl, visiting her grandparents. A real cutie then, and now. About six weeks ago, she was back in Newcastle and spoke at my daughter’s school. She was a hit.

Her family is wonderful, and so is she.....plus she adores “W”, her former boss.

I try to catch her on FOX whenever I can. She has a bright future ahead of her. In spite of her Washington exposure, she has managed to retain her western conservative values.

I am still stunned they mentioned that Detroit knew he was on board, but apparently did not alert the planes captain!
Imagine had they done so!

Our security system doesn’t at all make me feel safe, although I am grateful for what they have stopped, it seems small compared to what’s on the horizon...scary to say the least.

As for Muslim stats...if push came to shove and they could safe my life at the hand of another Muslim...is there a reason I should believe they would step up for my life if theirs is threatened by doing so? I think not.

Dana Perino strikes me as dedicated, intelligent, studied, classy and knowledgeable about most aspects of politics. IMHO her astute responses on Fox News are always unchallenged and educational for those of us who appreciate the window she gives us into the White House and its operation. I have no doubt she, like Liz Cheney and Sarah Palin, have much more knowledge about politics in general than most senators and representatives.

Better yet, none of the three women strikes me as the type of person to pass bills in the middle of the night and call it transparency.

What we need at this time are ethical and lobbyist-free leaders who work for US and love our nation. Each of these women strike me as knowing where the evil moneychangers lurk and woud have no difficulty setting our nation back on the right track in every instance this administration has derailed it.

Some say a PR thing, but I tend to agree what was going to be said was stopped along the way.

The reporters even inquired what the “shock” was and Brennans response was hardly that. As I see it no new information we didn’t know, but why didn’t they press the issue Detroit knew he was on that plane? Could be someones getting cover for this extreme error?

I throughly like Liz Cheney. She’s amazing to watch when they attempt to put her up against the wall, remains calm but has the facts and is upfront and direct in stating them. Reminds me of her dad, with a twist. She’s not afraid they’ll put her behind an eight ball, she’s ready and she knows it.
