The original sin of the good-riddance decade came in December of 2000, when the United States Supreme Court intervened to stop a complete recount of the votes in Florida and then declared George Bush to be the president.
This extreme judicial activism was not merely a devastating assault on American democracy. It set in motion the Bush presidency, and with it the pathologies that the Bush-Cheney administration imposed on the country in the form of unnecessary wars, failed economic policies, assaults on civil liberties and crudely divisive and hyper-partisan governance.
Bush, Dick Cheney and aides are surely to blame for much of what ailed America during the 2000s, and for what will ail America for decades to come.
But it was the U.S. Supreme Court's unprecedented meddling in the presidential election process an intervention that would have horrified the founders of a republic that was supposed to enjoy a separation of executive, legislative and judicial powers made the Bush-Cheney interregnum possible.

Krakauer recites this same drivel concerning the election of 2000... along with a lot of other propaganda on how Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Wilkinson were the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. He also paints Tillman and his family as flaming Libs.
Damn, I wish I had saved "Washington's Crossing" for last.
The writer is a jerk!!
I like how they never discuss the tens of thousands of Florida absentee ballots that got thrown out. I am from Florida and I was in the Navy at the time, it is good to know how people value my vote.
Al Gore did NOT succeed at stealing the presidency.
Good grief... the "wah" factor is still out there.
I was one of the overseas military votes from Florida.
What this author seems to have missed is the Demorats were already trying to steal the election by announcing Gore winning in FL without all the votes. They are always trying to steal elections because they can’t win on their lies.
What else can I say: this is John Nichols, a hard leftist with a regular spot on Wisconsin Public Radio. The election of Bush in 2000 has been validated by every independent investigatory panel that conducted one. But not good enough for conspiracy nuts like Nichols.
Remember when they tried to count the votes behind closed doors?””
Now they have gone from counting votes of citizens behind closed doors to writing and passing legislation behind closed doors- and refusing to let Republicans inside.
Rumor has it that Republicans are being told “No space in the room” in all the discussions about our latest security failure, also.
Jhhust thew khilometeres down the eharth is incwedibly hot sheveral MHILLIONN degwqees....”
When Al Gore sells/destroys his mega-mansion and moves in to a double-wide trailer with both the Clintons, I will believe his rhetoric about using less of Earth’s resources... He can take John Edwards with him, also.
Not one second sooner.
ping to 2000 election recount story
I thought this was an article based on Satire at first, then I realized, wow, some people will just be in a cloudy haze the rest of their living days.
John Nichols
media critics Jeff Cohen, John Nichols, Robert McChesney and David Brock claim that FOX News manufactures the news by slyly injecting opinion into its news shows and more importantly has begun to set the standard for the way that news is reported at other networks
no but arguing with people who don’t care sure does, so they can name it any way they want.
That is a lie, of course. Gore never petitioned for a "complete recount," he asked for selected recounts in four counties controlled by Democrats. The FL Supreme Court, packed with leftists, thought that would be just fine. The Supreme Court noticed that such a scheme violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment, and overruled SCOFLA.
Leftists count on the fact that relatively few people are aware of the basic facts of the election challenge described above. Over time, they work to replace reality with their own self-serving myths, by repeating them over and over and over.
First, thanks for your service.
Second, I'm glad Gore's rotten strategy didn't succeed.
One good thing that came out of Florida was the attention paid to Gore trying to screw our military. He deserved to lose for that, if nothing else.
At least there are Freepers here to refute it and tell the truth. The lib SOBs are never going to quit lying about it.
I really liked that man! Still do.
Oh maggief. That’s a keeper.
I really liked that man. Still do.
