WASHINGTON -- Senate Democrats are poised to pass a landmark health care bill that could define President Barack Obama's legacy and usher in near-universal medical coverage for the first time in U.S. history.
Ahead lie complex talks with the House to reach final legislation in the new year.
"We stand on the doorstep of history," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat. "We recognize that, but much more importantly, we stand so close to making so many individual lives better."
The vote Thursday on the bill extending health care coverage to some 31 million uninsured Americans brings Obama closer to achieving his top domestic priority. The White House and Congress have now come farther toward the goal of a comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. health care system than any of their predecessors.
But the final step may be the hardest: reconciling the Senate bill with a significantly different version already approved in November by the House of Representatives.

Mc Connell was absolutely pissed!
And Reid is playing the deformed child sympathy card, again.
Especially those of the ruling class.
Harry Reid is on the floor at the moment- pontificating.
They’ll be voting shortly.

Reid is just repeating what he has said in his other monologues.
Insipid little man.
“I say...this is just the beginning”..
Invoking Ted Kennedy...yuck..
I can’t watch...I will NOT let them ruin my Christmas Eve...
Understood.
And just to show you what a great idea this is, we’re exempting congress from this reform,,,,suckers, vote for the RATS again, Ethyl.
Interesting how vague Biden appears in this.
They are doing roll call now.
Good grief- having to hear Joe Biden at this hour of the day really is too much.
I correct myself, they are voting now.
They are up to the the “F”’s now. DEms are voting Yes and GOP is voting NO.
I know- but it sounded as though they’re voting on something to do with getting housing financing easier for veterans and “other federal employees”...I don’t think this is The Bill, is it?
Up to the L’s. We are still a free country.
But only for a few more minutes.
I guess Mitch got the memo from Rush about his delivery. Sorry pal, about 10 years too late for you and your “friends” in the Senate. Only two come to mind who should be leading that chamber for the right; DeMint and Risch from Idaho.
On the House side Boehner needs to go as well. We need someone like Joe Wilson to fire things up and get the Dems panties in a wad.
Lieberman voted “aye” . . . what a hero.
Lieberman “Aye”.
Never trust Joe Lieberman.
The nayes are not that far behind the ayes.
Nelson voted “Aye”. Time for his retirement!
