Democrats’ Health Bill Passes Key Senate Vote Republicans pledge to fight on despite losing early Monday

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats’ health care overhaul passed a key test in a party-line vote early Monday, in a dramatic defeat for Republicans that put the legislation on track for Christmas-week passage.

In the run-up to the vote, the escalation in rhetoric was remarkable on both sides of an issue that has divided the two political parties for months.

"This process is not legislation. This process is corruption," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., referring to the last-minute flurry of dealmaking that enabled Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and the White House to lock in the 60 votes needed to approve the legislation.

Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island responded in near-Biblical terms. In a speech on the Senate floor, he said Republicans are embarked on a "no-holds barred mission of propaganda, obstruction and fear. ... There will be a reckoning. There will come a day of judgment about who was telling the truth."

First 60-vote test coming up Whatever else it was, the legislation represented the culmination of a year's work for Democrats, pressed by President Barack Obama to remake the nation's health care system.

Besides the vote I’m steamed at the deals that were made. All that money, our money, going to LA and 49 states have to bear the burdern of Medicare for Kansas forever. Surely there is a Supreme Court case there.

Midnight. On a Sunday. During taxpayers’ CHRISTMAS holidays. Voters conveniently otherwise occupied.

When you have RURAL Senators--Democrat or not--(the Dakotas and Nebraska for instance) whose constituents detest federal intrusion in such a personal thing as health care, going against the wishes of their states in order to appease an unpopular President, then you know the game is about over.

That's what puzzles me the most. Why are they trying to appease him so? He's not popular, he's becoming politically radioactive...and yet the senators are kicking their constituencies in the teeth to obey him.

LOL.

All I’m gathering from your rant is GOP good, Dems and Conservatives bad. Is that correct?

So is there or is there not conservatives in the GOP? If they are, are they the liars you ranted about?

Who makes up theGOP that you are so fond of? It can’t be the lying conservatives, right?

Who was spending like drunken sailors in 2001 up till 2005? Was it the lying media, democrats or conservatives?

Well your GOP had control at the time. And discretionary spending (not mandatory spending that you rant in defense about) went up some 30-35 percent. Biggest increase in some 30 plus years. That doesn’t include defense spending.

Was it your GOP leadership or the lying conservative GOP that pushed for Amnesty Bill? Same GOP that approved the 850 Billion Wall Street Bailout? Remember 33 of your GOP voted for that bill.

I know those lying conservatives you rant about voted NO. But the media must have lied about that too.

All the spending and lame compromises with their democratic colleagues is what got them ousted in 2006 and humiliated in 2008.

At first glance, looks like whomever designed the graph was trying to have it both ways. When you pick it apart you can see where the GOP increased spending while controlling congress.

Glad they awakened for a few years with the “Contract With America”. Course it must have been your GOP that was in control then because, as I pointed out, spending increased under their control in 98 and has continued since.

If the GOP takes control of congress in 2010, I hope it will be the conservative (you define as liars) GOP majority and not the current GOP that you seem so fond of.

Because the GOP you seem so protective of will just be the same as the current democrats.

Got to love your McCain, talking tough because he is up for reelection, but will be the same if he keeps his seat.

It won’t matter who you vote for, it’ll be more of the same. I think folks are in denial if they think anything except a full out uprising will stop them.

Even that won't stop them with the military and common street thugs behind them. No offense to the good military FR families but we've already seen the military fold with their leaders falling into line that the Ft. Hood massacre had nothing to do with Islam.

“Snap out of it people! Or are you so willing to give up on our republic and our liberty because we took a hit??”

Agreed. Time to take the road less traveled, namely, the road to repeal.

This one has been ranting and making seminar spam posts to this effect for some time.

GOP = good, tried hard, nothing but fought hard for years, etc,,,.

Conservatives = very bad, pouted, stayed home, caused us to get Obama, blah, blah, blah!

RINOs are all alike. They cover for each other.

Actually, the majority of the population is simply stupid and cannot see the obvious.

True.

Have faith the "sleeping or dumb giant is waking up to this unruly government.

Lets hope if the Republicans win, we go back to our conservative roots and dump the compassionate (liberal) conservative tag.

All that compassionate compromising did us more harm then good.

Lets start with unseating the weak face of the GOP, our friend Juan McCain.

Our freedoms, liberty and national identity are slowly slipping away. Pretty sad.

I know, but there is a price to pay. Maybe it could be God's judgment for the country's national sins, reaching high unto heaven?

"What happened to forcing the reading of the bill???"

That is my question too. I see no one has replied to you. I think what is happening is that last night's vote was the first procedural vote. The "make them read it" point hasn't been reached yet. That trigger hasn't been pulled.

A civil war requires a display of military might. I don’t believe our fighting forces could be trusted to do any dirty work against US citizens for Zero.

As dedicated to duty as our military is, I can’t imagine that Obama believes they would shoot down large numbers of US citizens on behalf of his agenda.

Ayers and Obama have been talking about a new military branch with new priorities and loyalties. That might be something to watch for. And it would be a challenge to get funding for.

FRegards ....

I keep seeing more and more post regarding coming civil wars or other violence, but I do not quite understand them. I am an extremely angry man, I thought that my countrymen and women would do research and vote correctly, but instead they voted for President Obama. However, I do not see what will start such an event as a civil war. I do not know how it will be organized, or even be lead. What will trigger this? In Waco we all watched women and children burned alive, and it didn’t seem to make to many people flinch. We are increasingly seeing the government abuse their power, waste or money and commit crimes that would jail us for 20 years each, but still nothing happens. I pray for the day this all stops, and our country gets back on the right track, but I feel that the country as a whole has become so complacent. I think our freedom is already lost and most of us do not even know it.

Or, perhaps they know something about rigged elections that we don’t know.

This.

They don't fear the elections, because the already know the outcome and are merely relying on The People either being too oblivious, dependent, or meek to do anything about it.

Our libery is gone, our Constitution ruined, and our once-great Republic is dead.

I agree with this. I sometimes wonder why the Republicans even bother showing up to work. It seems like they can be serving their states better, but organizing townhalls and controlling public opinion, or simply educating people on this astrocity.
