A major winter storm was moving up the Atlantic Coast on Friday night, with forecasters expecting accumulations of one to two feet of snow in some areas by Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
President Obama returned from Copenhagen early Saturday, landing at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland amid a major winter storm.
Winter storm warnings were in effect from Tennessee and North Carolina to the southern New England states, and the storm was expected to affect Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and other cities. A blizzard warning was in effect for Long Island.
The National Weather Service said travel conditions in those areas would be extremely treacherous by Saturday morning.
In Washington, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty declared a snow emergency, effective at 7 a.m. Saturday.
All indications are this will be a major storm perhaps the biggest weve seen in several years, Mayor Fenty said in a news release, and we are going to throw everything we have at it to keep the District open for business on this busy preholiday weekend.

Here, the hoarders, in addition to bread and milk, buy up all the toilet paper. That always cracks me up. Hey, if you run out of toilet paper, use the newspaper. About all it’s good for anyway.
The best time to go shopping, at least for me, is during a Steelers game. Go before the game and the lineup at the checkouts end at the back of the store. During the game, there is hardly anyone but the employees.

I don't think the Outback will be making a grocery run today. Or tomorrow.
My 7 year-old niece seems to be getting a kick out of it:
Well "yes" but have you tried using the Internet?
Oh, dear. And the college kids are the least able to make good decisions about what to do when they get stuck . . . and the least likely to have a good emergency kit in the car (unless mama made them pack one).
Friend of mine at work is a VMI grad.
We have never gotten that much snow here. I'd settle for 3-4 inches at this point, we haven't had a good snowfall in years. I know at least 3 years because my middle Lab is 3 1/2 years old and has never fetched a snowball or seen the ground white. My oldest Lab is 10 and she's even ridden a sled (by herself) down the 17th fairway at Chastain Park golf course (best sledding hill in town, but look out for Nancy Creek at the bottom.)
We train dogs heading down your way, south of Newnan, and one of our club members lives in Roanoke AL.
I remember that snowstorm skated along to the south of us. Even my parents on the GA coast got a little snow . . . we got just a brief little snow shower that didn't even stick. Very disappointing.
I expect that my Labs, being Labs, will think that 3-4" of snow is a playground that God ordained especially for them. They are not finicky like (many) Dachshunds - they love mud, flooded cornfields, breaking the ice on the duck pond, and all things wet and messy. My ten year old will probably be content to trot beside me and admire the scenery, while the three year old and the 10 month old run wild. (She is SO glad that we got the young pup, it takes the heat off her because the three year old wants to play constantly.)
I just moved here two weeks ago from Michigan. Staying in Towson. I do’t really need to stock up because I’ve been deathly ill the last two days with some sort of food poisoning. I’m just eating bananas and apple sauce.
What kills me is how people here don’t seem to know how to drive in snow. I had to go to teh drug store and on the way home, I passed a car sitting still blocking two lanes, not trying to move. THere were only 2” of unplowed snow on the ground. I wish I was feeling better. My hotel is on a big hill and it would be fun to go sledding down York Ave.
I was go;ing to add a window scraper, a spare tire that isn’t flat, jumper cables and anything else related to keeping your vehicle in good working order.
Those items are already in the car, but for some, would be a good reminder.
Windex too or the newer “car window cleaner” that works better. Inside windows fog up. I’ve used Newspapers spread across the front window for insulation from the cold and the “sun visor” on the back window for same.
I’ve been stuck in my car at a rest stop and was so glad I had my sleeping bag and left over backpacking food with me. And indoor facilities.
Welcome to the People’s Democratic Republic of Maryland.
Marylanders get a lot of flak about not being able to drive, period. I think that is because we get people from all over the country and the driving styles don’t mix well.
As for snow, well, we get it so infrequently that everyone forgets what they’re supposed to do, which is stay home.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
I’ve noticed that. I think the roads are narrower too which makes it scarier to drive during rush hour. Lot’s of tire scrapes on the cement median.
OR BUFFALO! HAHA!
“I think the roads are narrower too which makes it scarier to drive during rush hour.”
Yes, a lot of the roads around here date from horse-and-buggy days so they’re not laid out for modern vehicles. Bridges east of the Mississippi can be lower, too.
Thats why the new term is climate change not global warming. The term climate change covers everything.

Do you see how insidious these politically correct terms are? I can’t believe I said climate change instead of global warming. I’m hearing the climate change mantra so much lately —it is like brain-washing.
Definitely at least 20” (in the flat, open areas) here in Ellicott City, HC, MD.
We need to take some pix of our German Shepherd in this. She LOVED it earlier, and wanted to play in it. But now we had to dig channels for her just to do her business, because it’s way too high for her.
We’ll see how my under-2 son reacts tomorrow; all indoors today.
