A major winter storm was moving up the Atlantic Coast on Friday night, with forecasters expecting accumulations of one to two feet of snow in some areas by Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
President Obama returned from Copenhagen early Saturday, landing at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland amid a major winter storm.
Winter storm warnings were in effect from Tennessee and North Carolina to the southern New England states, and the storm was expected to affect Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and other cities. A blizzard warning was in effect for Long Island.
The National Weather Service said travel conditions in those areas would be “extremely treacherous” by Saturday morning.
In Washington, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty declared a snow emergency, effective at 7 a.m. Saturday.
“All indications are this will be a major storm — perhaps the biggest we’ve seen in several years,” Mayor Fenty said in a news release, “and we are going to throw everything we have at it to keep the District open for business on this busy preholiday weekend.”

The states in the effected region are already under severe financial stress (from over spending). How are they going to pay for the massive snow removal expense? Horrendous state deficits just got a lot worse.

Virginia Highways a Mess
In Virginia, parts of Interstates 81 and 77 have been shut down, and people have been stranded in their cars for up to 12 hours, said Joan Morris, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Transportation. There is a seven-mile backup of vehicles near Mile Marker 188 on I-81 near Lexington, according to Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Jeff Caldwell. A tractor-trailer accident Friday night led officials to close down the highway there, and it has not re-opened yet. Crews have not been able to get in to clear it because of the jam of cars leading up to the scene, he said. Officials have told stranded motorists calling in on their cell phones to call 911 if they're in an emergency, a message repeated on VDOT's web site and being broadcast on its 511 traffic information channel Meanwhile, I-77 at the West Virginia border has re-opened but remains clogged, Caldwell said. West Virginia closed the border, causing a huge backup of traffic into Virginia. Many motorists have abandoned their vehicles, hindering the ability of snow plows to get through. Tow trucks are attempting to tow away trucks that were unable to get up hills.

That’s why the new term is “climate change” not “global warming.” The term “climate change” covers everything.
Glad my daughter decided to go to Davidson instead of W&L. (Me, I would have gone to W&L in a heartbeat, but I'm not my daughter).
Her exams were over Thursday night, and her driving home Friday from Lexington would have been cutting it WAY too fine.
In fact, when we drove up to look at W&L, there was snow on the ground. I think it was right around this time, too.
In the little town I live in, which is always nearly bankrupt, the snow removal folks only do the main streets. I live on a main road; so it’s been plowed and salted. But heaven help those who live on side streets, particularly those up in the hills. We have had some winters where road salt was in short supply; the main roads couldn’t be cleared.
