The issue over tissue in the bathroom — the really super-soft stuff — is more like the fight about the big SUVs loved by many Americans.
Anti-green, environmentalists say. Politically incorrect. Why should Americans use luxurious toilet paper made from old-growth trees when much of the world gets by with a far more basic and often recycled product?
Why should we flush redwoods, so to speak?
So Greenpeace, the Natural Resources Defense Council and other environmental groups have pushed manufacturers such as Kimberly-Clark (Cottonelle) and Procter & Gamble (Charmin) to stop using wood from virgin forests to make tissue products.
Mountains of paper are dumped every day into recycling bins in homes, offices, factories and schools. Use that to make toilet paper, the activists say.
Time to roll off the big number: If each American family would buy one recycled roll just one time, it would save 400,000 trees, allegedly.
The problem, though, is that each time paper is shredded during the recycling process, its fibers get shorter. The shorter the fiber, the less soft the tissue. And Americans, though saying in surveys that they embrace green initiatives, also say they don't want to sacrifice comfort.
"The truth is that other parts of the world are further along in using recycled content," said Kay Jackson, spokeswoman for Kimberly-Clark. "The American consumer still wants softness, and they are speaking with their pocketbooks."
Pulling back in a competitive market is asking a lot, manufacturers say. They also point out that only 5 percent of forest-industry production goes toward toilet paper.

We had some recycled paper towels in the washroom at work once that literally smelled like s—t when wetted. Was fine for hand drying other than that. Wouldn’t even want to think about using that stuff as toilet paper though - way too rough.

Muzzlems like these: toilet, drinking fountain, sink to wash your face, bowl to wash your feet, trough for the goat to drink from, pool to stand in when the weather is hot, bowl to wash your clothes, slop sink to rinse the mop, sink to wash vegetables, sink to wash the dishes, well to get water for cooking, bucket to rinse paint brushes after you paint signs that say "Death to those who anger the religion of peace."
I think they want us to not use paper OR our fingers. They just want us to be natural. If sparrows don’t wipe, people shouldn’t wipe.
If God had wanted us to use toilet paper, he would have given us trees and knowledge to make it.
I wonder if this group is headed by Mr. Arthur J. Foyt? Last time I saw him he was speaking on the dangers of unsafe dyes in toilet paper causing irritation of the rectum. That was before he tried to stop the Cannonball Run racers.
We’ve had good luck with the Costco Kirkland Signature brand. Some of the really soft stuff is...too linty.
Oh, I hate that stuff...some public restrooms use a TP that is one-ply and has a wax paper like texture. It may be cheap but it really lacks in the effectiveness department.
We don’t have a Costco here, but one is supposedly coming to Destin soon...........

Now we are talking about a subject I am an expert on. I was in the paper business for 35 years and know my sh*t paper.
The above statement by Kay is extremely false, but one would expect that from a KC spokesperson. The US is the biggest recycler of paper in the world bar none. The problem is KC is not and is getting all sorts of crap from the enviro weenies because of it. The “retail market” wants soft the “away from home market” wants recycled.
Is recycled TP not as soft as 100% virgin, the answer is yes, but the 100% recycled is pretty damn good and always getting better. For the most part that crap about using “old growth” to make TP is also crap, most of it comes from the pine forests down south. The green weenies get their pants in a wad over the recycling process too.
Could use leaves ... Do you think Prince Charles, Gore or OB would do that??
A good test is to take Kleenex, 3 or 4 sheets put it in a jar and shake the jar as hard and for as long as you want. The stuff never dissolves.

They are ALREADY in your bathroom. Congress passed a law in 1992 that dictates what kind of toilets WE PEONS ARE ALLOWED TO HAVE IN OUR BATHROOMS. The toilets in the US Capitol do not conform. Here is the Dave Barry take on it. We should have all stood up and screamed at the time this happened.
