More details emerge on Target's probe of immigrant workers

WALNUT CREEK — Almost a month after an internal probe pushed 50 immigrant workers out of their jobs at a downtown Target store, interviews with former and current store employees portray a mass firing that was selective, planned in advance and confusing to many of those forced out.

Sparked by an allegation that illegal immigrants worked on the night shift, the Walnut Creek store last month attracted the attention of the Minneapolis corporate headquarters of the 1,700-store chain. The company sent a team to investigate, according to several people close to the incident.

By the end of the second week of November, 50 Latino employees — at least half of whom say they were given no warning of what was coming — were out of their jobs. It was not a layoff, Target said last week.

Nor did the 50 employees quit, said Rocio Avila of the San Francisco-based legal advocacy group La Raza Centro Legal, which has intervened on their behalf.

But whether the Latino workers were fired, or were otherwise compelled to leave on their own because they did not have the proper documents, remains a point of contention. Target says the store questioned some workers in mid-November about their eligibility to work in the United States, prompting most of those workers to voluntarily resign. It will not say any more than that.

Sure they did...Hey, and I bet after they hired dozens of low wage, non-English speaking employees, they were just in total shock to find all these people were here illegally.

You're obviously unfamiliar with how modern HR works and the hoops they're forced, yes forced, to jump through by the Feds. If they refused to hire a bunch of non-English speaking employees they'd be sued out of business for unlawful discrimination.

So the employee presents his or her bogus documents, submits the I-9's, and when the 'no match' letter comes back they call the employee in for a little chat.

They're given a choice. Bring in the correct paperwork or hasta la vista, baby.

Yea, it's stupid and makes no sense. Yea, it pisses me off. Yea, they probably knew from the get-go. But none of that matters.

Target appears to have complied with the law. End of story.

LOL!

Are you just playing the stooopid role, or are you really that naive?

So.......The poor unsuspecting zillion dollar corporation had no idea they were hiring low wage illegal aliens...And those corrupt politicians that the zillion dollar corporations throw millions of dollars at in the form of campaign contributions as bribes to keep those borders open are the real bad guys here.

hehehehhhehhe.

I didn't miss this part of your comments:

Target was complying with the law, unlike their illegal immigrant employees.

Ya see, you were clearly attempting to isolate the corrupt illegal alien hiring, zillion dollar mega corp, while blaming in on the illegal low wage slobs that think company benefits mean a 10 minute break.

Now you piss off, slick.

I don’t know if Targets payroll department was alerted to these SS# irregularities by the IRS, some whistle blower, or they simply figured out themselves that the paperwork didn’t pass muster.

In the case of SS#’s not matching -IIRC- all the employer can do is ask the employee to clear it up. They cannot fire over that issue.

In any case. Once any employee is out the door, the employer has no further responsibility, unless sued or unemployment insurance claims are filed.

I mean..., if I had a "bozo" filter, I would definitely put you on my "bozo list" -- but unfortunately I don't have a bozo list...

Free Republic does not need a bozo filter, bozo filters are for wimps.
[ it's just too bad I don't have that "bozo list"...]

: > )

Free Republic would not be as effective with bozo filters kids.

Don’t think so.

I’m rusty on this stuff, but used to read up on all of it.

Even when Bush extended the voluntary Workplace Verification Bill, the employer could not fire over it. I believe there was text in the forms the employer used that stated possible “discrimination” issues, if an employer chose to do so.

This possibility would run true to any situation regarding mismatching numbers because only the feds can know who is really who. Which is using a forged or stolen document. And since they collect tax dollars from one of the parties who never files for a return, you can guess how often they choose to enforce the law.

There was guy here on FR a few years ago from TX. He was total illegal advocate. I can’t think of his name. I don’t know if you guys know who I am referring to but it’s driving me crazy that I can’t remember. We seem to have a couple of more quislings popping up on FR now and that brought him to mind. Can you help me out in remembering?

I can’t remember either. There were a couple. One much more vocal then the others. He used to always bring up Tancredo “hiring illegals” BS.
