A sword-wielding man died early this morning hours after being Tased twice by police. Police identified him later Friday as Hatchel Pate Adams III, 36, of the first block of Overlook Court in Hampton.
According to a news release from Hampton Police, officers responded to a complaint involving an emergency custody order in the 1st block of Overlook Court about 11 p.m. Thursday.
Officers tried to make contact with Adams, but he refused to come to the door, police said. They went inside after calling one of the man's relatives, who came to the scene.
Adams, carrying a Samurai-style sword, swung it at the officers, police said. Officers Tased him. He continued to swing the sword, police said, so officers Tased him a second time and tried to arrest him.
Adams stopped breathing, and officers called medics and performed CPR. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m.
Officers involved were placed on administrative leave while the department conducts an internal investigation, police said.
All BS aside, I wonder how many fatal Taser incidents there are a year.
More than the government will admit, I’d bet.

one is too many...
You know, the Second Amendment also covers swords... so merely having one was no reason for them to taze him.
I’d of shot him from the get go.
Yes...I thought it was good that the reporter/editor made it clear why the police were there and that they tased after he swung the sword at them.
Agreed.
It was all a misunderstanding. Adams was swinging the sword in his sleep after watching an episode of Gilligan's Island the night before. Related to Patch?
You’re a moron. He came at cops with a sword and was tased and the sucker died. What were cops supposed to do, invite him for tea? They acted responsibly.
Another version of the story from the Daily Break. Link only by request.
They used great self control in not shooting him right off.
Oh, yeah, no doubt. He was asking to get shot.
I'm just curious how often Taser incidents are fatal.
How about swinging it at a police officer? Think that might change the situation just a leetle bit? Read the article.
crew you
Dumas* knew in advance they were dealing with someone that had a mental problem. You may want to shoot down all the people who don't measure up to your high standards. I guess you like the goose step and the one arm forward salute as well, your heroes, the SS really knew how to deal with retired people.
“Hatchel Pate Adams III, 36”
With a name like that he was almost destined to die with a sword in his hand - or some other bizarre way.
True but attempting to kill the officers with it certainly did. I assume the only reason they did not just shoot him was because he was a mental case and not a normal criminal.
