Litchfield Conn. slaps down our war heroes, orders yellow ribbons removed to “save the trees”
The Collins Report ^ | December 11, 2009 | Kevin “Coach” Collins

Posted on 12/11/2009 6:07:48 AM PST by jmaroneps37

Litchfield Connecticut settled in 1721 and the home of Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen has turned its back on today’s war heroes.

Since 2003 yellow ribbons have been tied around five trees standing on the Litchfield’s “Green”, the center of its civic life.

Earlier this week Litchfield’s Town Board ruled the ribbons had to be removed regardless of their purpose as reminders that America is fighting a war of survival.

Can’t get their stories straight

Like most challenged liberals the town’s Board is fuzzy about why they pulled this stunt.

Despite six years with no evidence to support it, they said “other groups supporting other causes” would want to put their ribbons up.

A second somewhat difficult to accept explanation held that tying ribbons around the trees poses a danger to them because the ribbons could cause a deadly tree fungus and kill the trees.

Another reason held that the ribbons weren’t cared for and became an eyesore amid the “neat and clean” look of the Green. Borough Warden Lee Losee said, “This is not about us being against ribbons as a show of support for the troops or being unpatriotic. Our reason is a genuine care for the Green.”

Are these people genuinely misguided or genuine liberal weenies?

If the Board was honest and could be accepted at its word, why wouldn’t anyone speak with a local television station asking about this?

If this wasn’t “unpatriotic” why didn’t the Board meet privately with the ribbon sponsors and straighten this out before this ruling?

Across the country stuff like this happens far too often. In Virginia a Medal of Honor winner had to fight to fly his American flag. People are told to take flags off their lockers at work, and even some churches are refusing to display American flags.

I'm getting pretty sick of crap like this. What makes this worse is that Litchfield County is 33/22 Republican the only even slightly GOP county in the state so presumably there are some GOPers on this Board. If so shame on them. And for my money they ARE unpatriotic!

Not always a good assumption; a lot depends on how well-organized the libs are and whether they can get their morons out to vote.

In a majority Republican village north of me, “activists” (AKA nanny staters) tried to enact an historical landmark designation for the entire village despite some sad looking ranch houses. Essentially, these clowns didn’t want new construction to make their domains less marketable but they wanted the entire village to suffer on their behalf. Although the vote was in an off year, opponents (mostly conservative Republicans and Libertarians were able to vote it down, just barely). The landmark proponents were hoping to use an off year and organization to overcome the majority.

This is another elections have consequences, politically correct, moments in time.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I’m guessing they’re just liberal weenies. Even if there was something to their arguments they could easily be overcome without stripping the ribbons.

Litchfield is a town for disaffected Greenwich types who want to "live in the country". Although tiny, Litchfield makes up for it in phoniness.

Believe me, any Republican up there is a "Lowell Weicker/William Weld" type more interested in rubbing elbows with their own type at the country club than loving their country. It's a superficially lovely place with some beautiful countryside, but the people are nauseating.

This is an small example of the reason why I left New England 27 Years ago and never went back. Heck, my own mother believes my 22 years in the Air Force was a waste of time.

Anyway, I hope to meet you when you came to visit the panhandle...

Where's the local American Legion, VFW and VVA members?
They should be standing six deep in front of those trees defying and daring authorities to remove the ribbons.

they said “other groups supporting other causes” would want to put their ribbons up.

Why can't every cause get one tree? You'd have to be pretty cold to deny an Autism awareness or blue/pink ribbons.

tying ribbons around the trees poses a danger to them because the ribbons could cause a deadly tree fungus and kill the trees.

I may not be a dendrologist, but I'm going to go out on a limb and call BS.

ribbons weren’t cared for and became an eyesore amid the “neat and clean” look of the Green.

New rule: "Want a ribbon up? Maintain it!"

These people are either stupid or were acting maliciously.

Wow - my brother served 21 years, and my son-in-law is a career Marine officer. I am SO proud of them both. I'm sorry your mother feels that way. Thank you for your service - I'm sure you know it was NOT a waste of time.

So if instead of yellow ribbons they tied lavender AIDS ribbons on the trees do you think the town would have an issue with it? Just asking.

The only “fair” thing to do is cut the trees down. Problem solved. Next.....
