Experiment to test killing 1 owl to help another

GRANTS PASS, Ore. – Scientists want to determine if killing the aggressive barred owl that has invaded old growth forests of the Northwest would help the protected spotted owl.

Federal biologists are doing a formal study to decide whether to do the experiment, and laying out the terms if they go ahead. The study will be available for public comment and is expected to be completed by fall 2010.

"This is to be done experimentally so we can nail down whether, in fact, removing barred owls could improve spotted owl demographics, and also to look into the feasibility of doing that," Fish and Wildlife biologist Robin Bown, who is overseeing the evaluation, said Wednesday.

He said a small-scale experiment with killing barred owls in northern California in 2005 created an uproar so Fish and Wildlife held meetings with interest groups to consider the ethical and moral implications of a larger experiment, and secured their agreement to look into an experiment.

Perhaps officials should arm the spotted owls with little .357 magnums?

It never ends... does it.

If the spotted owl leaves, about half their draconian environazi laws (and study grants) go right with it...

The enviro nazis already killed the logging industry to save the spotted owl and it didn’t work, now they’re going to kill the barred owl, probably with the same results.

Typical govt stupidity. First they kill the logging industry because it was supposedly wiping out the spotted owl. Oh, but wait, the spotted owl is still declining. Oh, the barred owl is wiping it out. Let’s kill the barred owl, too.
Besides, aren’t they all believers in survival of the fittest?

I think they are shooting the wrong birds.

The Barred Owl doesn’t prevent logging, the Spotted Owl does.

Don’t these guys know that?

Fire the Fishy Wild Persons now!

“Ethical” & “moral” implications of shooting owls? ? ? ?

Only on Planet Gore could such a question arise. Alas, only in America could tax payer money be squandered on such a ‘question’.

Any gooberment goobers found to have participated in this commie based concept must be made to completely reimburse the taxpayers for every cent they wasted, then fire them.

The scientists are going to attempt a radical departure from the usual rubric by first attempting the experiment on humans via the Public Health option. If human trials are successful, they hope to have the program in place by 2012 to save the endangered spotted owl species.

All kidding aside, the Bard Owl is like a nocturnal airborne killing machine during nesting season, which is mid-April in Wisconsin. They can be so bad on us during lambing season that we lose several lambs every night. All they take is the soft tissues of the head. They hit any lamb under a week old while their skulls are still soft.

They are highly motivated to feed their chicks back at the nest. The carnage lasts around three weeks. My family memebers take turns blasting off a shotgun once an hour during the night. It really cuts down on the losses, but does very little for neighbor relations.
