On the other hand, they've also proven that there aren't two Division 1 subdivisions, but three. If anyone had any illusions that the mid-majors were in any way treated as being part of the same league as the power conference, I think this Fiesta Bowl farce just disabused them.
Agree 100%. This game is a horrible slap in the face to both programs.
All the more reason to scrap the BS and replace it with a playoff system as they have in the FCS.
Sherman Anti-Trust anyone?
Every year we hear the same complaints about the BCS system and calls for a Division I playoff, but I think you are always going to have this sort of controversy no matter how a playoff system is organized. It's a natural consequence of having a sport where it's impossible to have every team play each other during the regular season, and where individual schedules will always promote subjective assessments of the teams when it comes to selecting post-season participants.
I was hoping Texas would loose.
TCU could beat Alabama, esp if Alabama plays like they played against Auburn.
Alabama got lucky, they caught Florida on an off night.
I thought the refs gave Alabama all the calls in the first quarter....near the beginning of the game, the Alabama defensive end grabbing Florida’s tight end jersy before he aught ball...no call...
The BCS exists for the glorification of the 6 major conferences. Period.
People who believe otherwise are fooling themselves.
The “BCS formula” is designed to minimize the chance of an “outsider” making the championship game, and it makes perfect sense to me that when basically forced to take two “outsider” teams into the system, that they’d pit them against each other rather than against teams from the “big 6”.
A 12-team playoff, seeded by final BCS standings and no more than 2 teams per conference, would yield brackets of:
(1) Alabama - bye
(8) Ohio State vs (9) Georgia Tech
(4) TCU - bye
(5) Florida vs (14) Brigham Young (#12 LSU and #13 Penn St excluded)
(3) Cincinnati - bye
(6) Boise State vs. (11) Virginia Tech
(2) Texas - bye
(7) Oregon vs (10) Iowa
The BCS is run by P*SSIES! They put these teams together because they knew they would both wipe the floor with whatever big conference school they were matched up against. I hope from now on when one of these schools or one like them play a big school they beat them 49-0 and the game ends with the small school going for two. This system is trash and needs to go. I don’t even have any interest in bowl games anymore.
Our team has been slighted by the BCS. Our perfect record has earned us the right not to be matched up with some no-where school that no one has ever heard of, from some no-name conference. Our perfect record and a strength of schedule similar to some Alabama or Texas High School teams has earned the right to play the third of fourth-place team from some major conference.
BCS = BS.
My old school is an FCS school, and has already been knocked out of the 16 team playoff field. The number one team in FCS got bounced in the quarterfinals this weekend. It’s the ONLY way to crown a true champion.
I agree. Both TCU and Boise State deserve a chance to get their butts kicked by Alabama. Roll Tide
Boise State should replace the WSU Cougars in the Pac - 10.
Problem solved.
When I learned of the matchup, I thought “Hmmm, looks like they are putting these 2 teams together at the kiddies’ table”. Guess I’m not the only one who thinks so.
If I’ve read this article correctly, the author claims both TCU and Boise State were ripped off yet the only proposal he makes for resolving that issue would be to the benefit of TCU (having them play Cincy or Florida instead of Boise). So in his scenario the winner of the Texas/Alabama game and TCU if it beat Cincy/Florida could be co-champions. Then no matter what team Boise beat, they still couldn’t finish on top. So his whining is a bit disingenuous.
Add Cincinnati to that list.
There are 5 undefeated teams this year. When was the last time that was the case?
In the old days, all the best college football was on New Year’s Day, and all the New Year’s Day football was excellent. There was no college football after New Year’s Day. Polls picked the National Champion. Ususally the polls were in agreement. Sometimes they weren’t. Under the old system, all 5 undefeated teams would still have a chance of being voted #1, up until New Years Day night. People would be saying things like “well, what if Texas only beats Alabama by 1, and Cincinatti beats Florida by 50, should Cincinatti be National Champs?” That’s the way it should be.
It doesn’t matter if a scientific process picks the National Champion. The New Years Day valuable tradition of the best college football is gone under the current system and would be gone under a longer playoff system.
At least under the current system, you know a month in advance who the champion could be and you only have to watch one game. Is that the intention? If the goal of the current system was to stop all debate about who the national champion is (except who will win that one game which is taking place about a week after New Years), they have succeeded.
At least this year, the teams in the title game are undefeated. It’s pretty bad when undefeated teams get left out of the title game in favor of teams from big conferences with a loss.
If the pros can have a playoff why can’t the NCAA.
Just one more game and the winners of those could square off, so TCU and Boise could have a shot.
Also, it won’t happen, but I would like to see Boise State join the Big 12 north, they need a couple of power houses in the north.
Don’t worry. Obama has a plan to fix this that is working it’s way through the Congress as we speak.
