Boise State, TCU Deserve Better

This should feel like a just reward for an offseason where the non-automatic qualifiers extolled their virtues in front of Congress, then reached unprecedented heights in the BCS era on the field.

It can't be understated that for the first time, two teams from outside of the major conferences have been granted access behind the BCS' velvet rope as No. 3 TCU and No. 6 Boise State will meet in the Fiesta Bowl. "I think the Fiesta Bowl, to their credit, is putting two very, very deserving teams on the field against each other," WAC commissioner Karl Benson said.

It's a statement, no doubt, but maybe not the one that this landmark moment should deliver, because the Broncos and Horned Frogs are having to play each other.

The Fiesta Bowl has created a matchup that seems more like a cop-out than an achievement; denying the two unbeatens a chance to validate their seasons against the big boys on the sports' biggest stage and opening up an entirely new chapter of BCS bashing/collusion allegations.

"As football fans, we have been deprived of the best possible matchups."

No, we haven't. Texas v. Alabama is the best possible matchup (of the remaining un-defeated teams) for the national championship.

My only objection to playoffs is that it would take away the week-to-week drama. I mean who even pays attention to college basketball until the NCAA Tournament? You’d have the same thing to some extent in college football if you had playoffs.

So my solution is immediately at the end of the season, have a drawing, with the Final Top 32 teams to pick two games in the following season, for each team against random non-conference opponents that also finished in the Top 32. Each team would play one of the games at home and the other away. The games would all be played on two weekends which would be reserved for those games, one early in the year, the other towards the end of the year. I think it would be huge with all of those marquee games being played over those weekends. So for example, Florida would have their 8 SEC games, the two BCS games, FSU and one homecoming opponent. I think with this system it will be much easier at the end of the year to determine who really deserves to play for the Title.

Alabama got lucky, they caught Florida on an off night.

Nah. Alabama kept Tebow mostly off the field by utilizing a great running game and eating up the clock. That was the key, IMO.

Sure, Tebow missed some chances, but he didn't get many to begin with.

Had Texas not received a do-over (one second) to cement their win, the BCS would likely have placed Florida and Alabama back in the championship game. Strength of schedule, especially on the computer side of things, would have made the difference.

I agree. Both TCU and Boise State deserve a chance to get their butts kicked by Alabama. Roll Tide

Boise State should replace the WSU Cougars in the Pac - 10.

Problem solved.

There are more games than Texas-Alabama. Of those, we have been deprived of the best possible matchups. I would think that would be obvious.

When I learned of the matchup, I thought “Hmmm, looks like they are putting these 2 teams together at the kiddies’ table”. Guess I’m not the only one who thinks so.

I think it’s ridiculous to call anything from this point forward a “National Championship Game” when we all know that last weekend’s SEC Championship was really the national title game. :-P

I hope Alabama does not think they "know" that...

I want them to go prove it.

TCU was a member of the Southwest Conference up until 1996 when that conference was cannibalized.

Governor Ann Richards made sure the expanded Big 12 took in Baylor instead of TCU because she was a Baylor alum.

Boise beat Oregon, Oregon beat out USC, TCU beat up on Clemson that beat up Miami, Florida State. Come on these two teams deserves better. Boise State can not even find any team from the major conferences to play against team next year. All major conferences are trying to avoid playing Boise.

Very good point.

SEC teams have often had a very difficult time winning national titles (especially in the 1980s and 1990s) because they usually have several strong teams that play each other and have a hard time getting through the season undefeated (especially with a conference championship game).

It's no coincidence that SEC teams have done very well under the BCS system. They've won five national titles since the first BCS year (1998), including the last three in a row and 4 of the last 6 going back to 2003.

Apart from Boise St. beating Oregon in the first game of the season, they both played sissy schools for most of the season.

Then why is the BCS so afraid of them that they shuffle them off to play each other, instead of non-"sissy" teams like yours?

Obviously every non-BCS team can’t join BCS conferences. Do you think it’s fair to tell half the teams in the country when the season starts “Sorry, no matter how well you play and how many games you win, you do NOT have the opportunity to win the national championship”?

I don’t watch the BcS nor the Fun League. But I believe in fair play-—and it’s not. It’s all about protectionism.

It’s quite easy to have BOTH a bowl system AND a playoff for a national championship.

"I am a Longhorn fan as well"

Sure, yeah, whatever you say pal. No self-respecting Horns fan would go on to make the ridiculous statements that follow that howler.

"...but on a neutral field TCU would be favored over Texas and probably whip them into next week"

Stop it, you're killing me!!! I am rarely privy to such good laughter material.

"...but you should thank God they aren’t playing TCU."

Sounds like you're the one who should be thanking God, TCU fan. Texas or Alabama would embarrass TCU in any matchup this season.

(The games that actually were even shown on television are marked for your perusal)

**Alabama got lucky, they caught Florida on an off night.**

I don’t know about that, but what’s with the dorky “F” logo helmets?? Maybe without having those blue or orange helmets w/’gators’ logos in Bama players faces all game was a subliminal plus for the Tide.

It may be different with college level players, but in high school, if you don’t look the part, some teams lose some of the intimitation mistique. Our local high school has had great success in small schools playoffs, but a consolidation with another school w/new uniforms left them looking like something else. Opposing players said it was like they weren’t playing against the old tradition rich school, and were less intimidated.
