Was Jimmy Carter a Better President Than Obama?

Posted on 12/04/2009 7:57:04 AM PST by ComtedeMaistre

Up to last year, most Americans believed that Jimmy Carter was the worst President in American history. But, right now, Americans are more fearful and more uncertain about the future of their country, than they were during the years that Carter was President (1977 - 1981). Obama has not even completed a year in office, yet the country is on the verge of economic collapse. Does anyone believe that America can afford to fight and win a war with Iran?

People may complain that tax rates were higher in the Carter years, but at least the financial burden for government spending was on the American tax-payers of the time, and was not passed on to future generations. In the late 1970s, Democrats controlled the White House, Congress, and the Senate. But many of those Democrats were Harry Truman/Scoop Jackson Democrats, who, while supporters of New Deal economic policies, were nevertheless patriotic Americans who cared for the future of the country. Congress was not as corrupt as it is today. Corporate interests and special interest groups did not have the power that they do today.

In the America of the 1970s, most of the stuff that you bought in shopping malls was stuff that was made in America, from clothes and toys, to TVs and screwdrivers. I do not remember coming across any stuff that was made in China in the 1970s. Illegal immigration was not a major problem at the time, and Los Angeles was one of the most pleasant places to live. The California of the 1970s was a more reliably Republican voting state than Mississippi.

When he was President, Jimmy Carter was a disaster, but he wasn't the extreme left-wing kook he became after he left office. Carter fired Andrew Young as ambassador to the UN, for talking to PLO representatives. Nobody could have imagined that nearly 3 decades later, he would talk to the even more radical Hamas leaders.

Those who remember the 1980 Democratic Presidential Primary, recall that Ted Kennedy was the left-wing challenger to Jimmy Carter. The Democrats of the 1970s would never have attempted to pass the huge socialized medicine legislation that is now threatening the economic future of America.

How many agree that Jimmy Carter, as bad as he was as President, was much better than Obama? Jimmuh needed 4 years to ruin the country, but Zero has caused more damage to America in less than a year, than Carter did in 4 years.

While no fan of the first half white president, he hasn’t yet been in office for a year. Give him more time to screw things up and then let us judge him.

6 one way, half a dozen the other. Carter was as bad, all things being relative. In the 70’s we never could’ve imagined the crap that BO cooks up ever happening in the US. After 30 years of bar lowering we have the equivalent.

Obama doesn't even act like a President "of the people".

We now own a majority share of GM...which is worthless, have lost half our retirement, can't afford our utility bills, hospital bills.

He's all about stripping us of every power we have...attacking our pocket books first...That brings us to our knees.

Obozo is going to make Carter look like Abraham Lincoln.

Too early to tell. But he’s the most expensive President.

During the Carter years you needed a cardigan, now you need hip waders.

Up to last year, most Americans believed that Jimmy Carter was the worst President in American history.

Did they really? If so, it doesn't say much for our collective knowledge of history.

Do you have a link to this poll?

It’s a hard call to make at this point. Remember that carter gave away the Panama Canal; allowed the iranians to seize and hold our embassy and personnel hostage for 444 days; got eight service members killed in a botched attempt to free said hostages; basically caused the russians to invade Afghanistan by his weanie, gutless foreign policy(which also allowed the commies to advance in central america and totally demoralized our allies). There were gas lines, double didgit interest rates, high inflation, the economy really sucked; the “misery index” was in use ad infinitum, ad nauseum.
I’m sure, that in four years, the great zero will be able to surpass carter, but he ain’t there yet.

Dear Reader has not yet generated double digit unemployment, double digit inflation and energy shortages. So far Jimmy still is in sole possession of last place

Zero has caused more damage to America in less than a year, than Carter did in 4 years.

That can't be stressed enough. Jimmuh was incompetent and way over his head, but I never thought he had a hatred for the country and its people. In his own pathetic, wrongheaded way he wanted to do the right thing.

OTOH Soetoro is a thinly disguised Marxist radical. He was raised on the writings of Saul Alinsky, was brainwashed by the black liberation theology of Jeremiah Wright and started his political career with domestic terrorist Bill Ayres. Not to mention that all his life he was groomed to be the "messiah" of the left, had doors opened for him and obstacles removed by still unknown powerful backers. Barry is far worse than Jimmy only because it's his unstated (although hinted) goal to make the US just one more humbled nation.

Agreed, but no war with Iran. Not under this President. He will destroy our military and our country.
