The hordes of Black Friday shoppers weren't enough to save retailers from dispiriting November sales, according to company data released Thursday.
About 30 national chains reported monthly sales at established stores on Thursday, a key measure of the industry's health. Several chains, including Costco and J.C. Penney, performed worse than analysts expected. Retailers said that unseasonably warm weather dampened sales at the beginning of the month. In addition, shoppers saved their cash for post-Thanksgiving deals.
"It was a month that disappointed us and, I think, the industry," said Michael Niemira, chief economist for the International Council of Shopping Centers, a trade group.

Only the Second Coming would get me there at 5 AM
Seven hours later, I bought a large TV 200 off, and the sale was supposed to end at 9.
It's time for business to stop worrying about profit and start worrying about helping people!

They believe that if we all loosened up, and just went out spending, then there would be a bottom-up recovery.
Just like that.
What they will never, ever understand that confiscatory taxes, burdensome employment rules, haphazard (and truly sophomoric) government meddling in the market, government takeovers of financial and production sectors, threats of government control of health-care, and (at least the appearance of) the largest-scale, most active and far-reaching corruption by an administration do not leave one with the means for non-essential purchases.
Also (and it's a big ALSO). We are not at all ...
...confident.
We have no confidence in Marxist Obama and we worry about our economic future, and we are totally unsure about what his actual (but perhaps unstated) ultimate little "plans" for us might be.
Me, I'm saving like crazy in case I need to go abroad for a medical vacation in the next decade or so.

“Some of these people would spend $50,000 + just to maintain their homes. Well Atlas shrugged and they stopped spending. Every morning you can drive down the street now. In the past it was hard.”
This is true here as well.
Don't know, I'm trying to anticipate the adjective Obama uses to replace "unprecedented". That's been rode more than Tiger's whores.
At least those on welfare haven’t been affected by the recession. You can’t lose a job when you don’t work! ;)
We just got home from our local Walmart. Nearly empty and this is the day after the govt. checks come in the mail. Mrs. panax didn’t want to go because it’s always so crowded on this day of the month. Cashiers were waiting for customers, no wait at all.
Obama’s gang of thieves and liars can spin this any way they want but we all know the truth.....PEOPLE AREN’T SPENDING MONEY! We’re a hair away from a real depression and smart folks are hanging on to their bucks.
“Cashiers were waiting for customers, no wait at all.”
I walked right up too. No lines.
“unseasonably warm weather dampened sales”
AGW!!
No Money No Sales what is the problem understanding this.
On top of the obvious problems with the economy, I just have to say - the choices in the women’s clothing department are atrocious.
Tacky - cheesy - dowdy- plain ‘ole UGLY clothes for sale.
Racks and racks and racks of ugly clothes.
“Normally I am not allowed in Southcenter mall traffic during christmas shopping season because my wife is afraid Ill ram someones car. ;) “
Snort, LOL!!
Do you notice if you go out on a weeknight to a restaurant or just driving around you see store parking lots that look like a ghost town?
People with money, business owners and others are not spending or hiring.
..........seems like EVERY year for the past 15-16 years there’s a story of retailers unhappy with sales. But most are all still there, day after day, year after year. And now online sales are huge. I just don’t get these articles. Same every year......
That's not the case in Los Angeles or Bakersfield. Stores and restaurants remain PACKED, especially on weekends.
Exactly. This Christmas will be the worst in a long long time. We need a Dem wipe out in 2010 and a court to ask him for his BC.
Speaking of welfare check. I was talking to someone who has an industrial company that has to test big & noisy diesel engines. Well it buts up to a not so great neighborhood. He said they cannot test the engines during the day cause the residents are on welfare and sleep during the day. No problem testing the loud engines at night!
“Retailers said that unseasonably warm weather dampened sales at the beginning of the month.
Yes, I thought that was a really stupid comment as well. Are they saying people would rather get out and run around if it’s cold and rainy or snowy? They talk like people were spending the day at the beach instead of shopping.
By noon on black friday all the “door buster” deals are gone, so it’s basically becomes a normal holiday business day. The way they load up black friday sales these days if you sleep until dawn you basically missed the sale.
