Zhihua Tian traveled thousands of miles from his native China earlier this year to profit from the treasures of the American education system.
Unfortunately, he landed at South Philadelphia High School, where the number of violent incidents often overshadow student achievements.
Tian, 19, of South Philly, and five other students who are recent immigrants are staying home today because they were among 26 Asian students who were attacked by a gang of other students throughout the day yesterday, said Xu Lin, of the Chinatown Development Corporation, who works with victimized students.

I have a solution to that problem right there. And it would even make some of the “gangsta” types into hard working people:

For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “Anyone who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
They're also required to take children of welfare deadbeats and provide them with pre-school, free breakfast and lunch, free clinic health care, "special ed" counseling...
Are you saying these kids resent the illegals moving in on their scam?
Somehow I think you're ascribing far more thought and deliberation to this conflict than is really there.
These kids are about 4th to 5th generation of people in a culture that tells them, deliberately, that they can’t succeed because people of other races won’t let them.
That’s where the “resentment” comes from - the lies that their OWN culture tells them.
"The City of Brotherly Shove."
“Are you saying these kids resent the illegals moving in on their scam?”
Members of “victim” classes seem to have a competition going about who’s the primary victim is and who is due benefits because of it.
“Somehow I think you’re ascribing far more thought and deliberation to this conflict than is really there.”
Probably true.
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Article states that the Tian was 19. My guess is that he's simply 'slumming it' for a school year to pickup is US HS Diploma & work on his language skills while applying to university. Probably should have taken private lessons & gone the GED route.
When we were at war with Italy...do you suppose we let just any Italians come on over?
I love Italian people and Italy myself. But when our two countries were enemies...did we let our enemies in freely? Of course not.
So either you believe in allowing your enemy free access to your resources, or you believe the ChiComs aren’t our enemies. Which is it?
Asian students are under attack only because all the white students have transferred to other schools...opportunistic targets. Not a hate crime though, the evil Asians open quickie marts in poor neighborhoods and trick the residents into buying lottery tickets and malt liquor, thereby keeping them poor, illiterate and uneducated.
True, many of these Asian students probably know more going into a Philly public school than they will ever learn there.
I agree. 19 is a little old to be going to a high school.
If only the Asian students were targeted, and no one else, then there’s more than likely a racial component involved. Yes, they’re probably either illegals or just very poor themselves. But, I can’t imagine their immigration status having anything to do with the attacks. I guess we’ll learn more soon.
I don’t doubt there’s resentment in other (suburban) schools based on the illegal status of students, though.
I realize you're being sarcastic. But, I wanted to add: I once lived in a Phila. neighborhood where there were several Asian-owned stores. There was much tension there between black and Asian, but some - not all, but some - of the Asian storeowners were culpable. The point is, all of that tension probably does spill over into the schools.
Philadelphia is, quite simply, an armpit of a place. And that’s putting it very, very politely.
Those PA Amish are up to it again.
You will note that most of those people are dead or in their 70-80's. S. Philly has changed a bit since Mario Lanza walked it's streets.
...before the Asians it was Jews that blacks hated for their storekeeping ways. I sense a pattern.
Good catch. Yes, he went to Central but never graduated.
As I said, I lived in one of those Phila. neighborhoods. Some businesses bring value to a neighborhood. Others ruin them.
