A would-be armed robber apparently had second thoughts when an employee pulled out his shotgun Monday night.
It happened at the Salem & Sons Convenience Store on Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount around 10:20 p.m.
Police say employees were inside cleaning up, and saw a customer at the front door. They let the man inside, but at the same time another man came in as well and showed a black handgun in the direction of an employee. That employee immediately got his shotgun, racked the slide, and pointed it at the would-be robber.
The robber then turned around and slowly left the store. Nothing was taken in the robbery attempt.
Rocky Mount police say there were two other successful robberies Monday night.
The first, around 6:20 p.m. at the Family Dollar on Harbour West Drive. There a man showed a black handgun and demanded money out of the cash register. Then at 10:00 p.m. at the Kangaroo Mart on North Wesleyan Boulevard a customer first asked for change. When the clerk refused, the man told her it was a robbery. Police say no weapon was shown in that robbery.

Rocky Mount, NC is a cesspool. For a city of its size, it is extremely violent & dangerous. The clerk did well to be armed.
Unlikely.
While I am happy that the clerk wasn't killed; he allowed an armed Felon to leave and attack an unarmed person in the future. Will this man kill his next victim? Will the robber rob someone else later? We cannot know.
What we do know, is that the clerk had the opportunity to hold the man until the police arrived, and if the robber did not cooperate with him, he would have had cause to kill him. The city would then have one less felon on the street.
The robber learned he must carry his own gun.
I do not fault the clerk for not killing the guy. Killing is not easy, particularly when the threat is leaving.
Twice it was a black handgun.
I blame the breakdown of the traditional black handgun family.....
; )
Seriously, I love how the LSM twists themselves in knots describing the gun, the guy’s socks, the car, etc—but never the perp.
A poster above said Rocky Mount NC was a cesspool. I’ve passed through that way a few times. Agreed.
The only correct armed defensive move for a shotgun; rack & fire!
That is something I honestly don't know. I'd like to think I wouldn't blow his head off - but my reasoning would be based upon the hassles involved, not the morality of the situation.
But, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that the first words out of my mouth, as the adreniline hit the blood stream would be "On the ground, M*ther*****" Failure to comply immediately would very likely be followed by a loud noise.
I'm pretty sure that I'd be resting the barrel on the back of his head, until the police arrived. When they arrived, I'd announce that the man is armed; that's why he's lying face down, with arms out. That would be my natural response. I'd let the cops disarm him; or clean up the mess. But, I can say with absolute certainty that he would not be allowed to leave.
I’m inclined to agree.
I lived in Houston, TX after going to college in South Dakota. In S.D. the thought was to simply take the person into custody and call the cops. Within 2 months of moving to Houston, I read of 3 separate cases where a homeowner caught the burglar and called the cops; and a week later the burglar returned to the home and killed the homeowner - as the burglar considered the arrest a personal affront.
Thus, the lesson learned in Texas is simple. Someone breaks into your home - kill them. Shoot them until their heart stops. No surrender, no prisoners, no excuses.
God Bless Texas. Consider that Texas has 4 of America’s largest cities; and all of these are well below the per capita rate of violent crime. Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. The bad guys know that Texans can shoot back, and that not only the law, but fellow Texans will leap to protect the vicitms; both in the jurys, and in the streets.
Now you’re blaming the clerk for any future crimes the perp may do.
Kind of like blaming the gun for the same thing.
It’s harder to pull the trigger than you think.
Good post, but most criminals never stop until they are incarcerated or eliminated.
This, my FRiend depends upon your frame of mind. I have terminated untold numbers of lives (ducks, deer, pheasants, rabbits, squirrels, ect). These animals have done me no personal harm; however an animal that threatens my life is not going to be shown a great deal of love, tenderness or mercy in response. Perhaps something is wrong with me, for the only reason I can honestly contemplate for withholding the finger squeeze is the mess I would have to clean up. That is the most truthful, direct and honest answer I can give.
Given the anger and outrage I would feel for having my life threatened; being forced to break out the Windex and a mop really would not be that big of a consequence to me. I've never been in the situation, but I do honestly think that if a man came into my home (or work) and threatened me, my response would be to eliminate the threat as quickly as possible. I believe in my heart, that the odds of the man being offered the chance to surrender are slim at best; as I think I'd rack and fire without a whole lot of thought involved.
Its harder to pull the trigger than you think
You want to attempt to break into my home to see for sure.
Talk is fine. Let’s see how you hold up after the shooting.
Whether you are right or wrong or for that matter what jurisdiction you reside in, there are lawyers attached to every round fired.
Whether you are right or wrong.
I agree about taking out the trash if necessary - just don’t puff out your chest and brag about it.
I was not bragging about it I was stating a FACT Break into my home or threaten me with harm and bang your gone. I will not lose any sleep over it.Guarantee
I used to service equipment in rocky mount and the place was nothing but a sewer hole.
