To: Forgotten Amendments

Clemmons had a long history of crime in Arkansas as a teenager that was a little more involved than what Huckabee has explained on Hannity or on O’Reilly.

By 1990, when he was 18 year old, Clemmons had been sentenced to the 108 years in prison for eight felony charges from those teenage years in Arkansas. The total prison term stemmed from multiple sentences, some of which were concurrent and others consecutive. The largest sentencing came in 1990, when he was given a 60-year prison term for breaking into an Arkansas state trooper’s home and stealing about $6,700-worth of items, including a gun. Clemmons was also sentenced in 1989 to 35 years in prison for robbing a woman at midnight in the parking lot of a Little Rock hotel bar. Clemmons pretended to have a gun in his pocket and threatened to shoot her if she did not give him her purse. When she reportedly responded, “Well, why don’t you just shoot?”, Clemmons punched her in the head and ran off with the purse, which contained $16 and a credit card. This is the incident that Huckabee talks about Clemmons getting such a long sentence for just stealing $16 dollars. Among Clemmons other sentencings were six years for weapon possession based on an arrest when he was a junior at Hall High School for carrying a .25-caliber pistol on school property; and eight years for burglary, theft and probation in Pulaski County on September 9, 1989. All in all Clemmons was not to be eligible for parole until 2015 or later.

This is the individual and set of criminal circumstances that Huckabee says any of us would have commuted. I disagree...with this string of crimes, and particularly his last one where he stole the large amount of material and the gun (and being known for being arrested for either carrying weapons or claiming to while committing his crimes), I would have stood by the long sentence to keep this increasingly violent person off of our streets.

And, Mike knows as well as anyone else, thet when a state governor gives clemency, and reduces a sentence specifically to make a person eligable for parole, the parol board almost always rubber stamps that decision and grants parole. The clemency itself from the governor acts as a recommendation to the parole board that is as compelling as any witness that would come before them.

Now, there are plenty of others after Huckabee who also failed and carry the weight and burden of some responsibility for this animal being on the street. There were other ample opportunities to keep Clemmonsin jail when he was caught, when he violated parole in Arkansas, when the prosecutor failed to bring charges quickly enough which allowed his release (both that prosecutor and the judge who granted his release bear some of the burden), and the latest occuring only 6 days before he killed the officer when he was awaiting a hearinging for raping a 13 year old girl and assaulting a sheriff’s deputy...and was released on 150,000 bail.

But., the simple fact is, if Huckabee had not commutted his sentence through clemency, he would never have been on the street to do any of that.

The criminal carries the burden for committing the crime...but once he was incarcerted and in prison, those that made it possible for him to be out of prison early, or out of jail on bail, carry the weight for putting him in a position (on the street) where he could commit those crimes. Huckabee is first in line on that latter list.

Sola...Jesus Christ is my personal Savior. He and He alone is my path to salvation. I bear this witness to you openly and sincerely. I am also LDS, and this is what I have been taught in my faith and accepted...irrespective of whatever other doctrinal and interpretive differences we may have. I am taught and preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Please...do not besmirch and judge millions of sincere worshippers of Jesus Christ with such a broad brush.

It is not my intent to get into a doctrinal debate or bash with you, nor will I...simnply to bear that sincere witness in the face of your claims and judgements. I ask you, again sincerely, to reconsider those judgements because they are simply not true.

It might be one thing for the Governor to make those comments to an aide, but for this Cox fellow to commit it to paper and sign it is idiotic.

Thanks for the lucid reply.

I still think all those sentences were excessive, and if that was the pattern in ARK, it may explain why he issued so many such orders.

Anyway, thanks for educating me rather than calling me names.

A jury heard the facts...more than what we have seen here. So did the Judge. They clearly felt, and I can understand it, that there was a feloniuos pattern that made it clear this individual was not safe to be on the streets.

They sentenced him accordingly.

Now, history has shown them to be exactly right.

Clearly, in his case, the sentences were not too excessive. Had those sentences been carried out, a young girl would not have been raped, a Sheriff's deputy would not have been assaulted, and four police officers would have been alive, right now, right this minute.

“There were zero expectations that my opinion would make any difference with you.”

It doesn’t, but when I realized you were from WA, it became obvious to me that on that issue (false outrage) I was wrong to tease you and common decency called for an apology on my part. You were part of the 10% with no hidden agenda.

There are just too many here that don’t really care about those poor souls that were killed, they just want to advance their agenda....be it a candidate, religion, etc. They scream bloody murder, but inwardly they are snikering inside to see someone they don’t like or someone competing with someone they do like...trip and fall.

It is like being a fanatical sports fan and enjoying it when a rival team’s star player is sidelined after receiving a bad injury. Not very “sportsmanlike.”

“No. It is more like ‘we told you so’ and you didn’t listen then and you aren’t listening now. Huck is finished. Get over it.”

I’ve been looking through your posts for the last few months. You spend an inordinate amount of time waging the “creations are idiots war.” I also note that on numerous occasions you like to point out “Huckabee thinks the earth is 6,000 years old.”

You may be upset about the “soft on crime” thing, but I really think your root problem with Huckabee is his religious views. Mike is a conservative (meaning Biblical literalist) evangelical Christian. That is your real problem with him. I’ve noted how polemic you are in your attacks on creationists and related types.

Hey, you can hold whatever view about the man or people he represents you want to hold. I do think you are being disingenuous about your prime dislike for him being his “soft on crime” ways. You just don’t like Conservative Christians.

(to the casual reader...the following is pure sarcasm)
Well, let’s look at this situation from an evolutionary viewpoint. This killer obviously had superior genetic traits that gave him an evolutionary advantage over those police officers. So, natural selection had him get the best of them. Of course, the officer that finally got him must have the really superior genetics. So, take comfort in that this officer will go on to produce many offspring to pass these superiors traits to humankind. No reason to be glum, evolution has prevailed. Also, in the process this killing helped eliminate that mentally genetic anomally Mike Huckabee from becoming the alpha male. Human evolution will be so furthered by this.

Huckabee is a doofus.

Mike is a conservative (meaning Biblical literalist) evangelical Christian.

Huckabee let his religion get in the way of common sense in freeing felons who conveniently 'found God' while in prison.

Interesting post. Assuming those letters are genuine, we are all extremely fortunate Huck wasn't able to advance farther politically than he did. Herzfeld offered sound, common sense advice and counsel and was given arrogance, sarcasm and condensation in return.

I can only guess about Huck's character and judgment, but people usually reveal themselves and Huck certainly has. He seems to be more like the televangelist mugging for the camera, one hand on a Bible and the other handing you the collection plate. Keep those donations coming, y'all.

People like that give whatever they are associated with a bad name and hurt its reputation, be it a church, a cause or a political party. Cut from a similar cloth, the difference between a Huckster and an algore is small. Sad that politics (and religion) attracts so many.
