Suspect's dad: FBI 'dropped the ball' on warning signs
Reported by: David Goins
Last Update: 11/24 7:58 am

The father of the man charged with shooting two soldiers in Little Rock is speaking out. He says his son, Abdulhakim Muhammad, was manipulated by Islamic extremists overseas and the FBI knew it but didn't step in before it was too late.

Melvin Bledsoe of Memphis looks at what his son is accused of doing at the Army Recruiter Station in Little Rock last June the same way he looks at foiled terror plots in Dallas, and the Fort Hood shootings earlier this month. He sees them all as acts of terrorism that could have been prevented.

"I want to say how sorry I am for the family of the soldier and we know what they're going through," Bledsoe says. "They're grieving and we're very sorry for their grieving."

Nearly six months after police say his son, Abdulhakim Muhammad, 24, gunned down two soldiers, Bledsoe wants answers from the federal government. "I don't understand why the federal government has not taken this case which it is,” Bledsoe says. “This involves a United States soldier."

Bledsoe says the FBI tracked his son for two years after he traveled to Yemen and knew of his growing extremist views but didn't do anything to stop it. As an example, he cites his son's purchase of an assault rifle shortly before the shooting.

"I think they could have asked some questions [like,] 'What are you doing with this weapon? What are you going to do with this weapon?'" When asked how he thought his son would have responded to such a question Bledsoe responded, "I think something would have changed a lot."

VICTIM!! My son that shot up some folks is a VICTIM! The FBI KNEW he was going to do something bad and they did NOTHING! Of course if they had tried to do something (completely illegal and unconstitutional) like arrest him for whatever... then it would have been racial profiling and we would have sued. BUT HE IS A VICTIM!!

I’m so sick of this crap I could scream. Wait, I just did, in caps lock.

I feel sorry for Mr. Bledsoe having to watch his son become a radicalized, dangerous terrorist and there’s nothing he could have done to stop it. It’s a terrible thing to watch this happen to one of your children. I applaud his position regarding terrorists.

Hind sight is always 20/20. The tough part of this is arresting someone for a crime he has not yet committed. If another administration was in power, I could actually see that happenning, but this administration will not prosecute for crimes that HAVE been committed (ACORN, SEIU beatings, Black Panthers, etc.) How do you expect the FBI to arrest this guy for something he is about to do, when they wont even jail those who ARE guilty of crimes against this country. The fault is not with the FBI, it is with the Obama administration. THEY should be the ones held accountable, and no one else.

OK, dear old Dad, you knew things as well (obviously by your comments).

1.) Why the hell didn’t you sing out to authorities about what you knew PRIOR to your son going jihadi? I know it must be difficult turning in your own son. Hell, I would even be OK with YOU doing some poking and prying into your own son’s life.

2.) Since you did know and didn’t sing out, though you may not be legally culpable, you bear responsibility ethically and morally to a degree for your son’s jihadi actions.

A Mujahid (Arabic: مجاهد, muǧāhid, literally "struggler", "justice-fighter" or "freedom-fighter") is a person who is fighting for freedom

Mr. Bledsloe is a respected businessman in Memphis. I didn't think that he was saying anything but that his son was responsible for the crime. The FBI DID drop the ball.

What is it about this society that requires us to find blame in something else other than the perpetrator of the crime? Contrary to myth, perps are not “forced” to commit crimes. But the myth provides a nice rationale for their actions.

Regardless of his status in Memphis, to say that the FBI should have done something is ridiculous. Especially in this climate of government. What exactly SHOULD they have done?

It must be terrible indeed. However, it is totally LAME to blame his son’s murders on the FBI. Had he parented in this way, too? “Son, make sure you remember that everything is someone else’s fault.”

FBI: “Son, we are going to have to arrest you for your thoughts.” Or perhaps, “It is illegal to travel to Yemen.” “We know what you will do in the future.” ?? Which of these is breaking the law, then? And why on earth would Little O and Eric Holder would give the go-ahead to do something like this?

And what about if the DAD takes the son’s gun away?

"What exactly SHOULD they have done?"

How about:

  1. Invite the punk and his father (separately) out for a friendly cup of coffee.

  2. Discuss some of the "anomalous" things in his recent past that had "come to their attention".

  3. Quietly advise him that any action taken by him re those "anomalies" would result in Federal "attention" he and his family definitely would not enjoy.

  4. Smile and say, "Be seeing [watching] you!"...

  5. Pat him on the head -- and pay for his coffee...

  6. Follow up with occasional "friendly" appearances in his rear-view mirror...
