It may be a gruelling and at-times dangerous journey for Muslim pilgrims, but Brisbane man Omar Saghir says the Hajj last year was the most amazing experience of his life.
Millions of Muslim pilgrims have already risked floods and swine flu this year on the annual journey to the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina.
But the 28-year-old wants to make the pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia again as soon as he can save up the money.
"The experience for me, because I'm Australian-born and I've never really been outside of Australia, it was a very, very, very intriguing experience," Mr Saghir said.
"It was very diverse and it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience because I haven't seen anything like it." Followers of Islam are required by their faith to try and make the pilgrimage once in their lifetime.
According to the Muslim faith the prophet Abraham performed a series of rituals in Mecca thousands of years ago, and on a modern-day Hajj pilgrims follow in those footsteps.
Over seven days the rituals include completing circuits of a building called the Kaaba in the centre of the Grand Mosque, throws stones in a ritual stoning of the devil, and drinking from the sacred Zamzam well.
This year around 3 million people are converging on Saudi Arabia, and they have already battled widespread floods in Jeddah, the city where most pilgrims arrive by plane.
And due to the huge numbers of pilgrims most Muslim travel agents routinely warn their clients to prepare themselves for frustration, mental anguish, annoyance and anger.

Too bad a B83 can’t be dropped on this abomination someday.
Do I see multiple Darwin awards here?
We may carp, but they show more adherence to their religion than many Christians. Or is it just show?
It’s not any show, they’re 100% satanically inspired to the end.
Yeah, I agree (revelations talks about the false profet Mo and his worship of the dragon — btw, for Mozzies, their holy number is 786), but they still show fanatical devotion that Christians now are lacking. We need to be more conservative Christians, not liberal ones.
If only we could put a nice, compact black hole/gravity well in each of those toilets, our problems would be eternally solved.

may they all come down with Swine Flu
The proper question is — what kind of personal ethics does it spawn? Jesus as recorded in the New Testament was not real big on ritual. Of more concern (in America) are various surveys showing that religious Christians’ personal life ethics are not highly different from their nonreligious neighbors. They’ll watch almost the same TV shows, divorce at almost the same rates, cheat on their spouses at almost the same rates.
May PISS be upon Mohammads Head
They pray 5x’s a day...just getting our kids out of bed for church ONCE a week can be a struggle. I’m still trying to figure it out. Perhaps it’s mind control but I really think they are all just INSANE!
Has Obammy and Mammy made the trip, yet?
Or will we taxpayers have to finance that damned trip, also?
I know GranMammy Obammy has made her appearance...did that cost the US anything...assuming she is under SS protection?
I think it’s better that we have longer masses — making it liberal and shorter doesn’t work. In contrast, the Orthodox have 2/3 hour long services and people STAND for it all and yet they are filled. Going easy doesn’t work.
All works based religions have enthusiasts. It's always been that way with all different religions. It really is not all that surprising. Christianity is different. It's not based on enthusiasm for the rituals as it is gratitude for God's grace.
The divine liturgy is one and a half hours (90 minutes) long, not 2/3 of an hour (40 minutes)
According to their works based religion, they have to go.
No pilgrimage, no paradise.
