WASHINGTON Invoking the memory of Edward M. Kennedy, Democrats united Saturday night to push historic health care legislation past a key Senate hurdle over the opposition of Republicans eager to inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama. There was not a vote to spare.
The 60-39 vote cleared the way for a bruising, full-scale debate beginning after Thanksgiving on the legislation, which is designed to extend coverage to roughly 31 million who lack it, crack down on insurance company practices that deny or dilute benefits and curtail the growth of spending on medical care nationally.
The spectator galleries were full for the unusual Saturday night showdown, and applause broke out briefly when the vote was announced. In a measure of the significance of the moment, senators sat quietly in their seats, standing only when they were called upon to vote.
In the final minutes of a daylong session, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., accused Republicans of trying to stifle a historic debate the nation needed.

While these Democrats love Ted Kennedy and his memory (did you all see Nancy Pelosi’s eyes tearing up during Obama’s speech to Congress on healthcare, mentioning Teddy), Ted Kennedy and the Kennedys ARE NOT BELOVED IN MIDDLE AMERICA. Ted may be a saint to the liberals, but invoking his memory WILL BE COUNTERPRODUCTIVE in trying to persuade most Americans about this legislation.
HA! Is that Mark Twain behind him? Does Reid know what he wrote about Congress?
It sure was. I feel bad for my adult children and grandkids. They are facing a tough future.
His wedding ring is almost off.Divorce? No makeup?Merry Christ Mass Obama.
So Dimocraps Landrieu and Lincoln have revealed themselves to be the political whores most knew they were. At least Landrieu held out for a 100 million dollar Saturday night “special”.
In spite of all the “circus” we now will get taxpayer funded abortions and government control of 1/6 of our economy.
Get ready for Cap and Tax.
why didn’t he vote ?
See tagline.
If Byrd gets to vote from the Mountain State, why aren’t all the senators voting from their home states? Might save us a lot of money if they didn’t have to travel to and live in D.C.

In related news, we’re screwed.

Reid and the Obama state media hyped this vote because they needed a PR victory for this awful bill.
The fact this vote was this close should tell everyone how awful the bill is !
This vote to proceed to debate is usually a no brain-er not a nasty fight .
Th real fight in the floor debate so get ready top fight like HELL for the next three to four weeks !
Lieberman plans to filibuster any bill with a public option so its going to get real ugly.
I don’t think obama cares about his ratings OR a second term. He is there to force through as much of his socialist agenda as quickly as he can. He also couldn’t care less what anyone thinks, as long as he can undermine the free market system and put Americans under government control.
They are all whores, the only question was the price.
The majority of Americans dont want this crap, and yet the left still shoves it down or throats. And they wonder why there is a anti government feeling in the land.
A few of these legislations and we’ll finally get to see how our government can make trains run on time.
LIstening to that live version, and hearing the Mark Levin Show replay in the background, is a particularly accurate soundtrack to our lives right now.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Aside from the absurd comparison, the man obviously knows nothing about how long and thoroughly the slavery discussion was muted and any abolitionist-leaning votes killed.
A bad day. This bill must be stopped in the end.
