Englewood saw two homicides this week, bringing its 2009 murder toll to 17 victims.
On Sunday, a 20-year-old man was found shot to death in the 500 block of West 58th Street, according to police information. The next day, a 21-year-old man was shot and killed about four blocks away.
This year, Englewood has seen 16 shooting deaths and one fatal beating, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
Fourteen of the 17 victims were male, 14 were under the age of 30 when they died and all victims were black, according to data from the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
Citywide, the homicide death toll for the year surpassed 400 victims this month. As of Wednesday afternoon, there have been 418 homicide victims, including 11 victims of automobile crashes in which the driver was initially charged with reckless homicide, RedEye found.
This month, there have been 25 homicides, including a fatal car crash that killed two people in Greater Grand Crossing. The driver in that crash initially was charged with reckless homicide. Police logged 38 murders in November last year.

I’m sorry...I wasn’t clear. I live in Western PA. Unfortunately, the murders and other crimes are all over, not just Chicago. And it’s not even in the inner city only; even the suburbs are seeing higher crime as well, much of which is becoming more and more violent.
And they can still vote...
The Amish community is completely out of control.
I’m not convinced law enforcement can do much here.
Deterrence doesn’t seem to have much effect on this generation of amoral/immoral folks. Overloaded prisons are a good example of that IMHO.
We somehow have to improve the society and the family structure. My daughter teaches 4th grade in an upscale suburb here in Indiana. 40% of her class is not from an intact family. And that’s probably one of the BEST segments of the population you could find in the entire US.
In our dreams.......he’s too stuck on himself to step down. It’d take a civil war to do that.....so’s I guess we’ll have to settle for 2012 but in the meantime, neuter him politically by electing CONSERVATIVES in 2010!......:)
Absoluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutely!
Actually, crime has been DROPPING in the largest cities, including my own (the largest in the US). Where violent crime has been rising has been in smaller cities, especially in the south and west.
Yesterday, I took a look at stats for my nearest big city, Pittsburgh. Now Pittsburgh doesn’t have nearly as many people as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc. Last year we had something like 37 murders, but iolent crime in general was rather high. One stat said that death from drive bys is relatively low here, but the number of drive bys themselves are huge. How much longer do you thnk it will be before the fatality rate rises?
