Commissioner Bassett said the measure failed because of lack of a motion
Live Oak County commissioners decided this week not to ban recreational shooting on lots in a subdivision where residents had complained.
Commissioner Jim Bassett said the measure failed Monday for lack of a motion. Officials had gathered response from residents in Lake Meadows Subdivision during a public hearing Oct. 15.
It was overwhelming among the residents that they want to keep it the way it was, Bassett said.
Shooting has been a contentious issue in Lake Meadows, where one couple sued two neighbors for shooting at target berms in their yards. Sparkey and Jan Osborn said they worried for the safety of their grandchildren and themselves when their neighbors were shooting.
They asked the county to ban recreational shooting under a Texas law that allows counties to do so in subdivisions in unincorporated areas that contain lots of 10 acres or less.
However, a dozen residents spoke against the ban at a public hearing, and Bassett said commissioners heard from more after that meeting.
Sparkey Osborn said they feel theyve been railroaded by county officials, who at first seemed amenable to a ban.
Its like everybody we talk to; it seems like they dont want to do anything, Osborn said.
...where one couple sued two neighbors for shooting at target berms in their yards...
How typical! All it takes is for one or two people to complain to get something leftist done. Line up millions of people on the right, and they are dismissed as kooks and dangerous.
If they don’t like it, maybe they should move back to the city. (And yes, I do shoot in my backyard.)
Previous threads on the subject:
Some people should just stay in the city!
Thanks for finding those threads.
Maybe they shouldn't be going onto their neighbors' property and standing in front of the target berms, then.
Ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.

“Next they will have .50 cal BMG Barretts with cop killer bullets.”
Thanks for the ping, SwinneySwitch.
We stop shooting after 10pm here in the Panhandle..........at “paper” targets.
Yeah. These guys appear to be very profession, careful, gun owners, who have an appropriate backstop, and a plan -- open fields -- if they manage to put a round over the berm. This is not a couple to lunk heads shooting beer cans off fence posts with a 30-06, which is what the language of the complainers implies.
I got my eye on a really nice one at the nearby bargain barn.....a Bushmaster Barrett-like 50 cal semi-auto...it’s only 7 grand!!!!! damn fine looking piece of varmint hardware if you ask me....

Ding, ding, sing. That is correct. We shoot in our “yard” to. Off the deck into the targets. Course our yard is 8 acres/
It took only ONE woman who moved to NW NJ from Long Island to b*tch and moan to shut down the range I went to as a kid, a range founded in 1946 by returning WW2 vets. It was in the next town over from where my family lived. My parents, brother, and I would go shooting every saturday when the weather permitted. The range changed it shooting times, but that wasn’t good enough and political pressure from the town council forced the land owner not to renew the lease with the gun club.
Local towns are very receptive to certain viewpoints. One person rules the day when many others object. I obviously don’t know everything that took place back there, but I don’t like one person being able to rule the day.
Sorry for your loss, and I mean that.
LOL! I have a bushie in .223. It is an insurance policy in the case the you know what hits the fan. bushmaster has this CR coming out in 2010. Sweet.
Holy crp! I went to their web site and their BA50 “carbine” is a 10-shot 50 BMG! In semi??? I think the Barrett only holds 5! Sugg retail is $4999.
I don't know about that. I keep trying to shoot 5.7x28 in my Barrett and they keep falling out the front, brass and all.
Burkah, burkah.
