Washington gay and lesbian newspaper The Washington Blade has ceased publication and is closing Monday, along with its parent company, Atlanta-based Window/Unite Media LLC.
Window/Unite published five gay and lesbian publications, including Southern Voice, South Florida Blade, The 411 Magazine and David Atlanta. All will stop publishing, and three of the company's offices will close.
The news, first reported by Washington City Papers sister paper Creative Loafing Atlanta, was confirmed by a Washington Blade employee. The publication has also stated the news on its Twitter feed: Washington Blade, like all Window Media publications, is closing today. Thank you for your support. (Keep following us for developments.)
Window/Unite Co-Presidents Michael Kitchens and Steve Myers, both based out of the area, were in town Monday to terminate the Blades 21 employees.
Blade Publisher Lynne Brown says its been a difficult day, but says to be on the lookout for a new publication to rise from the Blade in the near future; she said Blade employees have already scheduled a meeting on Tuesday to discuss starting their own venture. The areas gay community is strong, she said, and In adversity, theres great opportunity.
Founded in 1969, the Washington Blade has grown from a single news sheet distributed to area bars to a weekly tabloid and Web site.

The Loaf got pinched off...
Fortunately, the employees keep their sh!t packed.....
What a HORROR!!
With the Blade gone, where will Democrat Congressional staffers in DC get their news from!!!
A FEDERAL BAILOUT is required, immediately!
In before the “Lack of Market Penetration” joke!
The homosexual community isn't as big as they claim.
The internet meets their need for hook ups.
Paper costs a lot of money.
The small retail and personal service businesses that met their peculiar needs (e.g. spare futons ~ for orgies I'd guess, male manicures, etc.) are fewer in number (on account of the Obama Depression) and are no longer available for The Blade's "free distribution".
And the gay guys thought the Democrats were their buddies. Ha!
Gays only read the gay newspapers for the personals.
That’s been taken over by Craigslist which lets them post for free.
Maybe all the married gays who have now gotten divorced are now as broke as their straight brethren......
When IO heard that the Washington “Gay” Blade went belly up, I thought that Barney Frank had gone straight .....
That’s so gay.
Take interior decorators ~ with home sales down and construction in the dumper, why do you need them ~ the loss of their beer tabs at gaybars nationwide must be in the billions.
Their subscription list should be worth something. The trustee in bankruptcy should auction it off for the sake of the creditors.
Think of all the gay workers who are being laid. Off.
They were really back doored by the news of the layoffs.
What happened? Not enough hard-core homo-porn in them?
Some conservative publications aren’t doing so well themselves. To celebrate this shutdown, consider subscribing to a pro-family publication or ordering material or donating to a worthy organization.
