Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Friday that the Obama administration will push for “immigration reform” by giving the estimated 14 million people who are in the United States illegally “fair pathway to earned legal status.”
“A tough and fair pathway to earned legal status will mandate that illegal immigrants meet a number of requirements—including registering, paying a fine, passing a criminal background check, fully paying all taxes and learning English,” Napolitano said Friday at a panel discussion at the liberal Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C.
“These are substantial requirements that will make sure this population gets right with the law,” Napolitano said. “It will help fix our broken system.”
Napolitano said the Obama administration is working to end the recession and put Americans back to work but said giving legal status to illegal aliens will “strengthen our economy.”
“Requiring illegal immigrants to register to earn legal status, as I discussed earlier, will strengthen our economy as these immigrants become full-paying taxpayers,” Napolitano said. “As labor leaders have made clear to me, immigration reform will be a boon to American workers.
“Think about it: unions will never achieve the best terms for workers when a large part of the workforce is illegal and operates in a shadow economy,” Napolitano said. “By contrast, the status quo not only hurts American workers, it also stifles potential opportunities to grow our economy.”
Napolitano said that she has seen a “major shift” in the immigration landscape, which the Obama administration hopes will make it easier for Congress to pass new immigration laws.

Exactly....and no mention of medical examination of the 14 million, which is mandatory for legal aliens.

“then the ACLU will sue and we’ll repeal whatever they dont nix, including registering, paying a fine, passing a criminal background check, fully paying all taxes and learning English,”
The progressives need a fresh population of ignorant voters. This will all end in bloodshed if the progressives are able to pull this off.

What alternate universe are these folks living in? How can they not know that there will ALWAYS be a large illegal workforce that will keep arriving as long as potential amnesty is in the offing.

So how is it that giving people who have to learn English strengthening our economy?
How is this fair to the legitimate immigrants who waited years, spent thousands of dollars, came in on a work or student visa and have to go back to their home country, because their visa expired? Then, these people come in and get to stay with no return.

So granting amnesty is a solution to our economy?
How about just sending them home, enforcing the law, and admitting through the front door, as should have always been the case.

Obama is such a pussy. He doesn’t have the balls to face the music and leaves the country before Holder announces the terrorists will be tried in New York as criminals, Greg Craig resigns and Napolitano makes this statement.
A LEADER, (someone the voters respect) would make these announcements himself.
Bottom line: Beneath that smug exterior, Obama is afraid of us. Remember when the complaint was “we wants people to like him?” His ego is huge, but it is fragile. We need to figure out how to use it.
And this announcement will just add another 5 million to the 30 in the next few months.

Even the unions should see this is NOT a good idea.
They’re not penalized NOW for not following our laws since those laws aren’t enforced. I suppose ACORN will be the outfit working to “”ensure”” that illegals follow the rules. Uh huh. And meanwhile, white, middle-class conservatives/Christians will be thrown in jail for everything from not buying health insurance to jaywalking.
The recent housing boom was fueled by illegals taking jobs away from skilled tradesmen in home construction. Reduced wages = reduced taxes to Uncle Sam = less money for Homeland Security, Porkulus of the U.S. and the swine in the Congress.
Porkulus of the U.S. needs the illegal vote in 2012, too.
Good, after all "illegal" is such a harsh word, "displaced foreign speaking patriots" is a much more compassionate title.
Don't go and refer to the democrat machine as a politically driven entity without concern for country or sovereignty!
