Pelosi has the votes
The Politico ^ | November 7, 2009 | Ben Smith

POLITICO reports:

Hours before an expected vote on a sweeping health care bill, House Democrats believe they've secured the 218 votes they need to approve the bill, several party insiders said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took to the House floor about 6:30 p.m. to say, “Today we will pass the Affordable Health Care for America Act.. . .We will make history. We will also make progress for America's working families."

Thirty-two Democrats have publicly declared their opposition to the bill, giving party leaders the narrowest possible margin to push the bill across the finish line. But numerous sources said Democrats believe they do have the votes after a day of intense lobbying of wavering Democrats.

I am hoping that is a red herring to divert energy from the Dem whip effort.

I cannot imagine this guy would get help from the GOP after bailing on this...

Come on Rob: we say this every time. "Campaign finance" won't get past Bush." "Campaign finance won't get past the Supreme Court."

Yet these things always have a way of miraculously getting past the insurmountable roadblock, don't they?

after a day of intense lobbying of wavering Democrats.

On a fundamental issue about the role of government you have representatives who can be persuaded one way or the other, or bought???? Geeez. You would think a Congressman can decided for himself. But I guess I expect too much out of them. At least in one way I repect Pelosi and her ilk. They have a certain viewpoint and are open about it and follow through.

Elections have consequences : (

Yes they do. My guy lost and the other guy rode in on obama's coat tails. Fortunately, if initial reports are true and Mad madam Pelousy hasn't gotten to him yet, he will vote against this madness.

What I hope voters remember is that Congressional votes also have consequences. Reps need to fear their constituents more than they fear some SanFranNan lunatic. Perhaps they'll learn that long before the next election, but definitely then.

If they don’t pass it today, they’ll pass it tomorrow, or the day after, etc etc.

They’re going to get SOMETHING passed just so they can stand back and say WE DID IT to their base.

The economy will take another huge hit because of it, but the dims are less concerned about the damage they’ll do as opposed to satisfying the kook fringe of their party.

Perhaps they'll learn that long before the next election, but definitely then.

If we still have three co-equal branches of government by then.

I just heard a few minutes ago no Republican will vote to pass this. They have lost one vote but that is from the CD-23 election where the Dem Owens promised to oppose Obamacare but within an hour after being sworn in he was on Pelosi’s teams.

We need to use him as an example of a Democrat who says one thing in the campaign and immediately after being sworn in follows the Pelosi progressive line.

Cao will be defeated in 2010 no matter what he does. He is accidentally in a safe Democrat district. He is way over his head too.
