America has changed, and you have helped. Although we did not succeed in winning this election, we have succeeded in making sure political parties and special interests no longer take the people for granted. I believe we have sent a powerful message and laid the groundwork for future conservative campaigns.
I congratulate Bill Owens on a hard won victory. In our tradition of free elections, our country continues. And although Bill Owens has won, I believe America is turning the page to a new dawn.
The ideas of freedom, sound fiscal management and citizen government have sprung back into our consciousness. Our founding fathers would be proud of New York 23. It was here that our principles, those that have been the foundation of our nation, came back to life with a vengeance. And it was here that the people rose up against the political bosses who tried to impose their will. It was here that people reached out to control their own destinies again.
Despite the election results, I am optimistic for our future, because now I know that I am not alone in wanting to repair our great nation. Throughout this campaign I have been inspired by the outpouring of support and the intensity of that support.
Ive met many different people in this campaign, from many walks of life and many professions; each with a different personal story to share. Yet we are all united in the belief that by participating in democracy, we could inspire change.
I urge that no one feel defeated, for this was only one of many elections. We came close, we put our agenda in front of the nation and the nation took notice. The worse thing we could do now, is not continue forward. Next year there are other elections and other candidates who have drawn inspiration from our efforts.
I would like to thank all of you who placed your faith in me, who worked tirelessly and shared your enthusiasm with those around you. You are all patriots, you have all stood up for your country and I am honored to stand among you.
Thank you,
I disagree, the 23rd race is only an issue to pros and dedicated political junkies and activists, they know what happened here regardless of a close loss.
A loss may enable the media to make noise for the masses but the insiders and the GOP will see the lesson as the same as a win, 3 or 4 percentage points one way or the other doesn’t change anything for the study of what took place in the race and what it means.
NOT hardly.....a guy comes in and decides to run about a month ago...gets NO money from the RNC....and almost pulls it off....AND, the scuzzy RINO is knocked out.....Not bad....oh, and we put the GOP on defense!!!
Thank you Doug Hoffman... interesting and classy comments here from Doug.
If Hoffman had won, he’d be caucusing with the Republicans and it would be a win for all. All would have come together under our terms. That is gone now.
And he behaved honorably.
Good job Doug Hoffman.
WE didn’t win anything. The GOP won two races. Conservatives went out on a limb to teach the GOP a lesson in NY23 and we lost. We may celebrate along side the Republicans on the other races, but WE lost this one.
I respectfully disagree. This was the Battle of Long Island. Valley Forge, Trenton, Saratoga and Yorktown lie ahead.
There was a flag from that war that had the image of a beaver gnawing on a tree. Below the image was the motto:
PERSERVERANCE
We will prevail.
WHAT!! are you crazy..this was huge...he came very close...do you know who he was 2 weeks ago...no...neither did I and he almost won..we ousted a RINO and we almost defeated someone who had their name in for a long time...THIS WAS HUGE AND THE DEMS KNOW IT!!! GIVEN 1 MORE WEEK WE WOULD HAVE WON. THIS IS GOOD STUFF RIGHT HERE!
what the hell are you talking about? This race was screwed up from the get go. We got the message out..give me a break. Leave it to some here to take a huge successful night like tonight and spin it into defeat. Go away,
You do recall the following, don't you?
1) There was no primary to allow people's true positions to be aired -- party officials in consultation with DC RINOs chose Scuzzy.
2) A month ago Hoffmann was mired in last place.
3) Sarah Palin spoke up, but did not campaign in person. A couple of Tweets and/or Facebook postings.
(Contrast this, by the way, to the multiple PERSONAL appearances that Obama(+) put in for Corzine and Deeds. FAIL.)
4) Hoffmann surged.
5) The RINOs did a double-pronged attack. The GOP hierarchy and heavy hitters -- including GOP chair Steele and RINO-turncoat-Newt -- publicly endorsed Scuzzy.
6) The GOP also spent $900,000 on Scuzzy.
7) At the last minute, Scuzzy dropped out. This had the effect of negating all of the GOP-cast absentee ballots, now guaranteed to be wasted for purposes of defeating the DEM.
8) To make the stab in the back DOUBLY sure, Scuzzy officially, and in public, endorsed the DEM. (WTF???)
9) Hoffman still came within 3% as a Third Party candidate, after coming from nowhere to remove the hand-picked GOP RINO quisling.
10) But all you can do is say "we lost, boo hoo."
I beg to differ.
Cheers!
(+)Have YOU accepted Barack H. Obama as your personal savior? (mmm, mmm, mmm)
Exactly. Hoffman should have held on until noon Wednesday at the earliest. Let the dust really settle.
NEVER, EVER conceed defeat...
Agreed
One more week? Yeah, if the election took place in 2013, it would have been a landslide...if only...
Go. Read. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2378053/posts
Stop being a negative defeatist. I think the NJ thing is just amazing.
daily kos endorsed Dede Scozzafava saying “fueled by the fact that Dede Scozzafava, the Republican, is actually the most liberal candidate in the race. (Heck, she has run on the very liberalWorking Families Party ballot line in the past.)
Sure, she is a Republican, and opposes the public option. But she’s been willing to raise taxes when budgets require it, and is to the left of most Democrats on social issues (including supporting gay marriage).”
Romney/Scozzafava 2012
Thank you, Doug Hoffman.
Hoffman did great....we ousted a hack RINO and WON
2 huge fights in very Left leaning States...things look
great for the Conservative GOP’s...I AM ALL SMILES AND SO WERE THE FOLKS IN HOFFMANS PARTY..HE WILL BE BACK AND EVERYONE KNOWS HIS NAME!!!! GREAT NIGHT!!!
So having a liberal like Scozzofava would have been a win?
Having 171 Republicans instead of 170 in the house is a victory? How was having Scozzofava in the house a win for the party? What would have happened with her that won’t happen now?
She wasn’t winning anyway. She was down by 5 in the last poll before Palin endorsed and by 15 before she dropped out. As we saw tonight, all the polls understated Owens’s support. So she would have lost anyway, likely by a larger margin than Hoffman. Owens was winning regardless.
This was a win because it rallied conservatives and showed them that they can make adifference and get the right candidates which will play out in 2010 and beyond.
It was always a longshot to have a guy jump n at the last minute. Now he’s a known quantity and if he campaigns as the actual nominee for the usual period instead of as the 3rd party guy for a few weeks he should do much better.
Tonight was a huge win for the GOP. The dems lost big in 2 Obama states including NJ. A state Obama personally went to and tied himself to Corzine.
If Hoffman and McDonnell had won but so did Corzine that would have been much better for the dems than what happened.
Health care has a much lesser chance of passing tonight than it did last night and that’s a huge victory for the GOP.
