New York Race Puts Republicans At A Crossroads
America Talks ^ | 11/01/09 | David Zublick

An interesting thing happened on the way to the congressional election in New York's 23rd district. The Republican candidate, Dede Scozzafava, dropped out of the race. This bodes well for the Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman, who, as it turns out happens to be a Republican who ran on a third party ticket against Scozzafava and the Democrat Bill Owens.

This is a fascinating race to watch, because it forces those in the Republican Party to take a hard look at what has become of the GOP. In the last few weeks, there has been a huge rift within the party between those supporting Hoffman, and the party loyalists who backed Scozzafava.

Hoffman was endorsed by the likes of Sarah Palin, Dick Armey, Michele Bachmann, Steve Forbes and others. Media outlets and personalities supporting Hoffman included the New York Post, The Weekly Standard, National Review, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Mark Levin and Glenn Beck.

Those who put party ahead of principle endorsed Scozzafava. They included Newt Gingrich, Peter King, and the Log Cabin Republicans, as well as an unsolicited endorsement from liberal activist Markos Moulitsas, founder and publisher of the Daily Kos blog. Scozzafava was also supported by GOP Chairman Michael Steele.

Why would a Republican running in a district that has been held by Republicans since the 1860s cause such a divide among those in her party?

Let's examine her record.

She has received the endorsement of the Working Families Party in her earlier campaigns, which has close ties to ACORN. She is pro-choice and pro-same-sex marriage.

In taking a look at what is happening with this race, one realizes that the GOP is at a crossroads. Republicans have to decide what they stand for and whether or not they can define themselves as being clearly different from the opposition.

After the Democrats swept both house of congress in 2006, there were many who said that conservatism was resoundingly defeated. The nation was headed in a new direction, one that would perhaps take us on the path toward socialism. That's what the people wanted, many believed. Others, however, argued that it was not conservatism that lost the election; it was "republicanism". The conservative electorate decided that if Republicans were not going to stand on principle, they needed to be punished.

The Republican Party seems to have lost its way. It has become 'democrat lite'. It is difficult to distinguish many Republicans from Democrats on many of the core issues that used to define them. Republicans used to be the party of smaller government, lower taxes and a strong military. They used to be pro-life, pro-second amendment, and in favor of traditional marriage.

Many Republicans, such as Gingrich and Steele, seem to believe that it is time to redefine the party, and become more inclusive of those who hold views that don't necessarily fall in lock-step with the base. Gingrich and others feel it is more important for Republicans to win elections, than it is to stand by the principles on which the party was founded.

The New York 23rd district election is a special election. It was created when John McHugh resigned his seat to become Secretary of the Army.

Doug Hoffman says that if he wins, he will run for re-election as a Republican. Hoffman defines what the party used to stand for.

Bu there is the very real possibility that a viable third party may emerge in this country which could challenge both the Republicans and Democrats. Many would welcome a third party as a refreshing change, because they feel that right now, they have no real choice.

The Republicans are at a crossroads right now. They need to decide if they want to fill the GOP with members, or of they want to stand on the foundations upon which the party was built. If they do not wish to be the party of true conservatism, a new party may emerge which will take back the values which once made us great, and restore this country to what the Founding Fathers intended.

Newt said Scuzzy was the future of the GOP and that we were traitors to support Hoffman.

Now she is apparently backing the Democrat in the race.

HHhmmm.... its all so confusing.

Its like the RINO’s were WRONG or something. =o)

New York Race Puts Republicans At A Crossroads

Not just Republicans....

A note to my fellow Upstate 'Rats: The 'Rats and RINOs want to do what they've done to us to the entire nation. Pretty soon there won't be anywhere else to go. You might think that sounds great, that it might be the answer to our depopulation problem, but it's the healthy bits that are keeping the nation afloat. If you don't have an economic and cultural deathwish, send the 'Rats and RINOs that message: Vote for Hoffman. I wish I could.

The whole point is that the two are not mutually exclusive.

Why all the hand wringing about a third party? This is a made-up concern, manufactured by a whimpy media.

Reforming and repairing the GOP works fine. At a time when many democrats are secretly worried that their party has gone off the rails ( surging hard left ) and there’s an effort under the radar to reform the brand back towards the middle, we should NOT be shocked that the GOP is taking sober account of its’ recent failures.

America has two main parties, each party needs to self cleanse constantly in order to attempt to win elections. This self-correction is neccessary to a representative republic, let those who corrupt a party pay for their sins with defeat at the polls. I’m enjoying the show, watching dems self destruct while watching repubs fix their RINO problem.

Hand wringing? Heck no, I love this stuff! These are Interesting Times.

Here is the voting Record for Current Republican Office Holders

Any office holder who voted for Cap & Trade should be removed.

They are either Traitors or too Dumb to hold the office

Our real focus should be on the Dems, but we should know the enemy within.

the difference here is the same as saying Jim Webb and Bawney Fwank are in the same party. Scozzafava and Hoffman are the same party.

The LameSpewMedia is making this more than it is. Just as the entire ObamaCare bill hangs on LIBS/MODS arguing about who is right, the GOP/CONS are doing the same things.

The GOP should take note that normal party liners that are conservative are no longer just going to sit out elections or not vote for either candidate.

They are mad as hell and if the GOP doesn’t put up conservative candidates that are willing to fight for individual rights, less government control and taxes - instead of compromising with the enemy then we are going to vote third party.

When the GOP is honest with Americans, and sticks to it’s conservative values and runs like minded candidates that are willing to tell the truth and have core values that are unmoveable then they win every election hands down.

When the GOP forces the socialist Democrats to explain their bills, plans and positions the majority of Americans find they are far too radical and socialist for their tastes.

Every survey shows that most Americans consider themselves conservative, what part of stupid does the GOP not understand when they think they have to move left to win. If anything they are losing because they haven’t moved right.

Time and again Independents will pick the Democrat if they are liberal - so Republicans might as well just go after the rest of them that are conservatives.

We also have to start being unafraid of telling it like it is. We should be talking to the black community about how the Democrats use them and don’t really care about them. How they are not victims unless they choose to be, they are just as smart and capable as the rest of Americans but have been held back by the Democrats.

I don't normally follow Congressional elections in New York, but this email got me to laughing. By way of explanation...

I registered as Democrat a long time ago, and never changed it. A real long time ago.

So I get Democratic "Least Common Denominator" email; from the DNC. You knoe "entitlement mentality" level text with really short words.

Here is what I received this morning:

Breaking News: GOP Chaos Erupts in Special Election

[Name deleted]--

Late yesterday news broke that the moderate Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, candidate in the hard-fought special election in New York's 23rd Congressional district, had been driven out and the Republican party was throwing their weight behind the Palin/Limbaugh/Glen Beck endorsed radical tea party candidate instead.

Today, the moderate Republican threw her support behind our proud Democratic candidate Bill Owens.

It has never been clearer that the Republican Party has been hijacked by extreme right wing ideologues with a radical agenda that would effectively dismantle Social Security and Medicare, and are out of step with a vast majority of Americans.

Eight extreme right wing groups spent more than $1 million on this campaign including the Minute Men, Club for Growth and the Family Research Council.

This means your work and your continued support and dedication have never been more critical as we face our one-year-out reporting deadline and this election on Tuesday.

We are up against a well-funded extremist GOP who will stop at nothing to win and whose agenda could quite literally take us backwards to the days of Bush-Cheney.

But, you and I can't let that happen. I will continue to keep you posted on news of this race continues and thank you again for standing with us. We will need you now more than ever.

Thanks,

Jon Vogel
DCCC Executive Director

Te beauty of these emails is that it saves me the work of knowing whom to support, where, when, and whom to contribute to.

I love the internet!

The Republicans are at a crossroads right now. They need to decide if they want to fill the GOP with members, or of they want to stand on the foundations upon which the party was built

It should be obvious to anyone that NY-23 is not the best case-study for this sort of situation. Scozzafava is clearly far out of the mainstream for even a "moderate" Republican. And it's looking increasingly like she was a mole/stalking horse designed to keep a mainstream Republican out of the seat.

From a hypothetical perspective, I'd guess that if she were to win, she'd make it only a few months into her term before doing a big, pomp/circumstance-loaded switch to the Dems on national TV.

So the real issue here isn't that GOP leaders like Newt were supporting a "moderate". It's that they got completely duped into thinking that Scozzafava was something other than a Dem using the (R) moniker for purposes of political opportunism.

...a new party may emerge which will take back the values which once made us great, and restore this country to what the Founding Fathers intended.

One already has. Begun only last year (by FReepers) it is already the third-largest in the country based on voter registrations. It was the only national political party to endorse Doug Hoffman when it actually meant something.

This analysis yellow highlights Elton Gallegly, Duncan Hunter Jr. and Michelle Bachmann for taking wrong positions.

Strong conservatives all; as are many others with yellow highlights.

That is politics. Similar deviations from strict party line votes occur among the dems.

Reasons often include local district interests—employers, jobs, etc.

I am certain the dems like to see their opposition eating their own.

You never heard me say that if the congressman had a yellow highlighted vote it meant he was a traitor.

When the TARP bill was passed there were a lot of Congressment that felt it was necessary, until after the bill and they realized what had been put over on them.

When the Auto Bailout bill took place there were some that still felt the same way until they saw how that was handled.

There is absolutely not excuse for voting for the Cap & Trade Bill. NONE. Anyone who voted for Cap & Trade in my opinion is a Traitor to the Country or simply too stupid to hold public office. Those who voted for that bill without qualifications should be removed from office.

The FDA food takeover bill is another stealth bill. It is intended to give Obozo the tool for the ultimate weapon. Food control. We are almost there and they intend to subject us all with this. It is a play to give Corporate Agriculture and Government total control of the U.S. food supply. And total political control. That is why they talk about Animal methane in Global Warming lies. To give them the leaver to starve us.

The table produces a voting pattern on key issues. Actions speak louder than words.

Another thing that the Congressional List I compiled does is identifies the regions where the Traitors are concentrated. NY, NJ, Great Lakes, FL, CA and a few others.

If I offended you I regret it, but the voting record of a Congressmen is revealing. Talk is cheap, actions reveal patterns.
