Path to legalization needed, GOP candidate Whitman says
San Diego Union - Tribune ^ | 10/29/09 | Sandra Dibble

SAN YSIDRO — With the San Ysidro border fence as her backdrop, Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman spoke out on immigration policy issues yesterday, saying it is “simply not practical” to deport the estimated 12.5 million illegal immigrants living and working in the United States.

The candidate, 53, said the solution is to find a mechanism that allows them to live here legally. “Can we get a fair program where people stand at the back of the line, they pay a fine, they do some things that would ultimately allow a path to legalization?” she asked.

Whitman also urged tougher measures against those who hire undocumented workers, and said that as governor “I would be an advocate . . . for the people of California to make sure we really do secure this border.”

The former chief executive of online auction company eBay made her remarks after a two-hour ride-along with two U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Though immigration is a federal issue, the governor “has to weigh in much more heavily on getting the federal government to fulfill its responsibility of paying for border control, of helping to pay for illegal immigrants that are in our prisons,” Whitman said.

Since declaring her candidacy in February, Whitman has spoken on immigration issues several times. She has said that had she lived in California in 1994, she would have voted against Proposition 187, a measure intended to deny education, health care and other services to illegal immigrants. Voters passed it, but its major provisions were overturned in court.

Others seeking the Republican nomination are Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former Rep. Tom Campbell.

The Democratic candidates are Attorney General Jerry Brown and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

Yesterday, Whitman reiterated her opposition to “sanctuary cities,” which pass local resolutions to protect illegal immigrants in their jurisdictions.

During her tour of the border, Whitman said agents told her they had enough people in the sector but wanted more technology, such as infrared cameras, to do their job.

The border tour “increased my sense of urgency, and wanting to make sure that the federal government takes responsibility for the resources to get the job done,” Whitman said.

San Diego has the largest concentration of Military in the world especially the Marines and Navy.

I spent a 2 1/2 year tour in SanDog. I lived 7 months in Chula-juana and moved up to Ramona to get away from the city. I served at Point Loma. I became familiar with all of San Diego.

You can frigging keep it. Nice place to visit— but it’s a gang infested sh!thole once you get east of the the beaches.

I still consider Tennessee my adopted home, but I live just 2 miles across the border so I can attend UA Huntsville as a resident for their Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering program.

I’ll take the peaceful green mountains any day.

You don’t know Chula Vist, Many huge developments with thousands of new beautiful homes. upscale shoping malls.

I live in the heart of San Diego, a few miles from the habor and near Balboa Park.
condo units in my neighborhood go for $500,000 to over 4 million

No point in me arguing with you.

I was going to post pictures of the parts of San Diego that I grew to hate, but it wouldn’t do any good.

We live in two entirely different worlds. It’s very obvious to me that you have never seen what I have seen and I’ve never been affluent enough to see what you have seen. I’m glad that your little corner of San Diego is so clean and safe. Just try to remember that isn’t ALL of your city.

Congratulations on your success, and may you continue to be blessed.

Like I said, I’ll take the peaceful green (now orange, yellow, and red) mountains of SE TN over any part of California any day. Sure, I have to put up with no traffic, no police helicopters, no airport noise, and no walls shared with the next-door neighbor. The only gun shots I ever hear are from the occasional hunter. We don’t have to lock our doors. I can target shoot in the back yard. The state doesn’t care what I do to my vehicles. Honestly, I may not have much money and live out in the sticks, but I am freer than you’ll ever be.

I don’t know why anyone would be surprised at anything this pro-child-killing Romneyite would say or do.

I find it very sad that CA has millions and millions of Conservatives, most of whom count for nothing in the big picture because they are so badly outnumbered.

There is already a “path to legalization”, many have walked down that path, the problem is illegals don’t want to walk down it, they want to jump to the head of the line and to hell with our laws. Whitman needs her butt kicked.

It makes me sick to hear this woman say “we can’t deport them”. I say, YES we can, any country can do what they want to do, and NEED to do. If we don’t, soon all of Mexico and latin countries will be here.

Meg Whitman is not who I would EVER vote for, however ALL the politicians tread lightly around the illegal immigration problem.

Oohhh... malls....

Pity about the whole “less freedom” thing, though. Oh well.

So, CA’s outrageous gun laws don’t actually exist?

You couldn’t pay me enough to live in your state. Fortunately, most of the engineering jobs are leaving it for here and other areas East, so that really isn’t much of a problem....

Not the ones in San Diego, major mega contracts weekly with dozens of Defense contractors
Mega with several dozens of biomedical, Telecomm. etc.

There have been thousands from the East coast and elsewhere
moving here because of the quality jobs.

also a Navy base in Texas closed and all the ships there
are now base here in S.D.

Your definition of “mega” and mine are clearly not the same. Of course, I’m IN the defense industry. Are you?

Like I said, there’s nothing anyone could pay me that would entice me to move somewhere less free like CA.

Most engineering jobs are LEAVING CA. For very good reason. The standard of living is much lower and taxes are higher.

LOL....

Other cities have large buildings, shopping, and a waterfront WITH freedom and lower taxes. Your pictures are really not that impressive. You keep posting those as if that would convince anyone that CA’s MASSIVE problems do not exist.

No sale.
