PESHAWAR, Pakistan — An explosion rocked a women's market in Pakistan's main northwest city of Peshawar on Wednesday, killing at least 16 people in the latest attack to shake the country as the army battles Islamist militants along the Afghan border.

At least 35 people were wounded in the blast, police said. It coincided with a trip to Pakistan by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was in the capital, Islamabad, some three hours drive away.

The explosion hit Peepl Mandi, a neighborhood in the city where many Shiite Muslims live. Police official Sajid Khan said it struck the Mina Bazaar, which caters to female shoppers. Another police official Abdul Sattar confirmed the casualty figures.

I apologize for being stupid, but could someone explain to me how blowing up women shopping for their families in a market is going to help what they perceive to be their cause?

If you're a member of a group that is hostile to the shiite sect, then killing a lot of shiite "breeders" would be desirable.

There's also the effect terrorism is designed to have- it's intended to make the governing authorities look impotent. The more people begin to accept the idea their government is ineffective and weak, the more powerful the terrorist group appears to be in comparison. The people will not be as inclined to cooperate with the government in terror and criminal investigations if they believe the government cannot protect them person can see his friend get murdered. Shadier people will lose respect for elected authorities and come to see the terrorist leader as the authority figure instead. The terrorists gain power, influence and control over areas in which they are seen as more powerful than the government. It's not unlike US inner cities where bystanders witness a murder and then deny seeing anything when the cops inquire. The people know that the cops will always leave, while the criminals will always be in the neighborhood.

Hillery: "Yes, I was there at the time of the blast. Shrapnel was falling all around us. We had to duck our heads and run for cover!"

Probably imagining things, but, this kind of thing seems to be on the upswing around our new, more enlightened world of Kumbaya.

When you think about it, our “progressive” marxist pals here in the US aim for the same effect by jamming up the legal system so it no longer functions. Instead of carrying out acts of terrorism themselves they now help criminals to create the neccessary chaos for them. The more criminals they can get off on any technicality they can think of, the easier they can make it for criminals to be criminals, the more the leftwing lawyers litigate against law enforcement, the the more they demonstrate that government cannot protect the people from the bad guys. When people are afraid, they don’t speak out, they don’t enter into debate, they don’t confront or question. And when people are silent that’s when progressive “community organizers” are able to gain control. Gun ownership muddles up their efforts a bit, though.

I think they want front page attention, definitely they wanted to send a message to the President Elect, whose fascination of Pakistan is more FIXED than any other sitting President. Didn’t he visit this country often in his youth?

Their tactic is to intimidate cowards (i.e the worthless bodies in charge of our governments and the pussy pacifists). All things considered, the tactic is working splendidly. Islam will dominate all of humanity in just a few more generations.

Jihadists want to provoke all out war so they can cry that they are being attacked by allies of the Great Satan in hopes of increasing their ranks in the name of Allah (damn him to Hell).

Yep.

Obama’s indecisiveness is just spurning them on.

The terrorists are seeing Obama as another Carter and Clinton — WEAK on national defense. Pile up the dead” and “the American public have no stomach for a long, protracted war” is replaying right before our eyes.

Obama and the Libs are playing right into Al Qaeda’s hand.

It's like Mogadishu deja vous — and the terrorists are more than willing to exploit that.

Heaven help us if they get their hands on Pakistan’s nukes. They’ll be blowing up cities instead of markets.

Terrorists are fully aware that they have a four year reprieve on any form of retalliation. I can’t imagine, now that they have been emboldened, how severe this is going to get.

It is MANDATORY, in this world, that a MAN occupy the White House.

And the number keeps growing: More than 95 dead in blast as Hillary Clinton arrives in Pakistan

A really interesting comment below the article by an Indian gentleman named Viney Chander Bhutani:

"It is about time that a few things were understood by US leaders.

It is a colossal misconception that Pakistan can be of assistance in the war in Afghanistan as part of the global war againsst terror. US leaders need to remember what we in India have known routinely for several years, namely, that Pakistan itself has been originator and user of terror as an instrument of its policies, both domestic and foreign, for several decades. India has paid a high price for Pakistan's choices....." Times Online

On that matter, we’re evidently all stupid.

It’s not going to win hearts and minds. It will either scare people into submission, or cause them to be so angry they’ll rejoice that the U.S. might help them out, even though they don’t relish the necessity.

The terrorists have jumped the shark. They did it in Iraq and learned nothing from it.

Now Iraqis regularly turn them in. Gotta smile at that reality.
