How Can Glenn Beck Be Right on So Much and Yet Still Believe the book of Mormon? (serious question)

Posted on 10/26/2009 7:51:02 AM PDT by Scythian

I'm a huge Beck fan, in fact I'm listening right now here

http://www.ksfa860.com/common/gap_streamer.php

but something really confuses me. It takes the ability to use real critical thinking to know what Beck (and most of us know about the state of the country and where we are heading). That is, we have the ability to discover the truth no matter how much the media or conventional wisdom try to hide it. Yet on Mormonism, Beck is cleary wrong. Any Christian knows that the book or momonism is severely flawed and that Joseph Smith was no prophet. How can Beck cut through all the chaff of what is going on in our world and come to the truth and yet believe the writings of Joseph Smith? It doesn't make sense? I'm not saying he's up to something secret, not by any means, it's just that he's so right about so many things and completely wrong on the most important thing. Now, he just said on the air that he believes Jesus is the Savior of the world and that he is Mormon.

I also think that because he is Mormon he is not attacked near as much if he was a Evangelical Bible only believer. Anyway, am I nutz or does Beck being a Mormon seem bizarre?

A couple of years ago, Preident Hinkley, Preident of the LDS Church asked the members to read the Book of Mormon before the end of the year.

Why??

More from the mouth of a late Prophet of MORMONism:

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

Ezra Taft Benson

Having read the Book of Mormon and the Old Testament I really can't say which is more bizarre to the non-believer.

Try JESUS' teachings in the NEW testement.

They'll set a person straight.

Either that or you insulted Mormons by suggesting they are all stupid through innuendos.

I; for one; truly HATE when that happens!

http://scriptures.lds.org/en/js_h/1/17#17

17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.”
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother,
“I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”

There’s your answer.

A 'witness' has sensed something.

A believer has not.

If the religion he chooses helps make him a better person then the choice is a good one and it is no body’s business but his.

The 'religion' I chose merely SAVES me.

Only I can make me a 'better' person.

What unites conservatives is not Christianity or any specific flavor of it. Instead, it is just the basic belief in limited consensual government.

So true!

Well, let me state up front that I'm at least impressed that you've addressed this topic head-on while most Lds ignore it. So I appreciate your focus. (Though I'm a bit disappointed re: your twisting what I actually reported about Lds describing Christian believers -- see below).

I'll cover that & a few other things on this post -- and then deal with the context of "corrupt" on the next post.

(You basically say mormons are wrong, they basically say you're wrong. So we should call mormons on intolerance?)

First of all the context of my comments were geared toward posters who were objecting to my objections about Mormonism. And many of them, like those mentioned in post #222, were seemingly giving Mormons a "free pass" so to speak on the same grounds they were "skewering" Scythian over...So, don't neglect the context. Secondly, your point might be worth considering if I made up the 2nd book of Revelation, and pointed specifically to verses about Mormons, and then said, "Thus saith the Lord. ALL the Mormon creeds are an abomination to him."

But I'm not the one citing "thus saith the Lord" now am I re: other religionists?
(a) Basically, you're trying to say, "Hey, we have religious stand-offs all the time; you think they're wrong; they think you're wrong. So what?"
(b) I can't point to a specific Biblical verse mentioning Mormons by name -- whereas that can't be said of the Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith, which even goes on to mention Presbyterians by name. IOW, Lds try to invoke the direct revelation of God re: his "opinion" of Christians. What I've given on this thread is my opinion.
(c) Furthermore, do I disagree with 100% of Mormon creeds? (No) Whereas Smith & the disciples that believe him labeled 100% of Christian creeds as an abomination to his God. (ain't that right? Was Smith correct on this point? ALL Creeds? The Apostles Creed?)

(And if the mormons were right that God is corporeal, might not a corporeal God take a dim view of the then-current creeds?)

Smith said "ALL" in reference to sectarian creeds -- not "some" or "most." Now tell me, what would any Mormon find objectionable in the Apostles Creed? (There isn't anything -- as long as you realize the word "catholic" in that time frame ONLY meant "universal")

The actual text (of Joseph Smith History 1:18-20) to which you are referring says the "creeds" were an abomination in God's sight--not the believers or the churches themselves.

Yes. So? I've already pointed that out three times on this thread:
It claims every other non-Mormon sect has 100% abominable creeds. ("Abomination" means putrid) [Post #222]
Beck & other Lds fuel religious slander on a worldwide basis, labeling the rest of us as "apostates" and 100% creedally abominable... [Post #234]
I don't appreciate being told 100% of my creeds are an 'abomination to God.' [Post #291]
(So I'm not exactly sure why you felt the need to lecture me on this point...Oh, I get it...I just read the rest of your post...in fact, you ensured that you twisted the above into what I said about Christian believers...here's your two twists:)

This doesn't sound like the "100% abominable"...that you call mormon's view of others...The text does say all of the sects were wrong, and that he was "to join none of them." But does this justify saying that mormons believe that all (other) Christian believers are "corrupt" and "an abomination to their God" as you say? I don't see it.

Well, I didn't see it that way, either -- not as you distortedly present it. That's why I took the time to quote back to you what I said about "abomination" on each post (#222, 234, 291). Look at them again. I never said "abomination" was the descriptor of persons now, did I? I clearly tied that word in reference to creeds only.

It appears that you are just trying to stir the pot by putting words in the mouths of those you oppose.

More two-faced hypocrisy. Here you accuse me of "trying to stir the pot by putting words in the mouths of those you oppose" and here you've been caught red-handed of doing exactly what you accuse me of. (Not a very good addition to the reputation of Lds apologists who typically distort what Christians say).

I'm sure if you exposed all of your beliefs to us, some could find fault in them.

>>> Could be - but it is more likely that he doesn’t know how the BoM and the BIBLE compare.

no doubt there.

Adding a bunch of thees and thows to make it sound biblical just doesn’t wash if you are familiar with God’s true writing style in the bible.

"Try JESUS' teachings in the NEW testement."

I specifically said to the "non-believer". If one doesn't believe in the Book of Mormon or the Old Testament they can both look pretty kooky.

1. Beck’s religion is Beck’s religion. His business. Not mine.

2. I don’t get a good AM radio signal from a station that carries him so the only time I can listen is when I can get an Internet stream of his show. I did watch his CNN show pretty religiously for a while and catch his Fox News show when I can.

3. Therefore, I don’t claim to be a “Beck expert,” but what I have always heard from him is a bit of an apocalyptic theme. Whether Bush or Obama was in office. Basically, it’s all going to crap. He was and is willing to look in the direction that most are not willing to look. However, unlike most conspiracy theorists, he actually gathers the evidence and makes the conclusion fit the evidence (most conspiracy theorists develop a theory and then look for evidence, either in context or not, that backs up that theory).

4. I do not claim to be an expert on Mormonism, but from what I understand, they teach their folks to look out for persecution and the end of days and to be ready for it. (Keep emergency supplies ready and so on) — probably an outgrowth of some of their experiences when the religion originally was founded. If you think about it, that is perfectly consistent with what Beck has been saying for the past several years.

5. Just because Beck is right about world events and that (IMHO) his religion is probably a big part of his underlying motivation to go there, that doesn’t say that I am defending his religion as having any sort of validity. i’m not. But I also think it is extremely bad form to have any type of theological discussion away from the Religion part of FR. Bottom line: we have a first amendment in this country.

YOU do; for in his testimoney THEY were looking for a church.
