Michelle Obama turns Breast Cancer Awareness Month into attack on insurance companies
Washington Examiner ^ | 10-23-2009 | Byron York

Posted on 10/23/2009 12:54:50 PM PDT by lifeisacarnival

The First Lady cited a new study from the Department of Health and Human Services -- which just happened to come out today -- citing breast cancer patients with insurance who had to pay an average of $6,200 in out-of-pocket costs each year. "This is with insurance," Mrs. Obama said. "These are the people who are blessed." The situation is, of course, far worse for those without insurance, Mrs. Obama said.

But the insurance companies make life miserable even for those with coverage. "And then there are those annual lifetime caps that insurance companies set," Mrs. Obama said, with "one recent survey show[ing] that ten percent of all cancer patients report hitting a cap on their benefits…"

$6200 per year is a lot, but waiting with a government plan for 3 years to be diagnosed, and then hoping to be treated, like in Britain, seems to be a worse fate.

I was fortunate to have early detection of pre-cancerous cells. Had surgery and extra screenings, MRIs, etc. It’s costing quite a bit with high deductible insurance, but, to me, it’s worth every penny. Lots of discretionary spending has been eliminated, but I’m grateful to have excellent medical care.

I don’t have one beef with the insurance company. They deliver what I contracted with them to deliver. I chose high deductible, over high monthly payments. My choice and I live with it. I’m not going to go crying to Michelle O over it.

$6200 a year is a pretty reasonable sum to pay for your life.

Maybe Obama can eliminate some of the regulations that make insurance more expensive.

How many breast cancer patients did she dump from the hospital where she worked because they didn’t have insurance?!

Thanks!

Michelle has a lot of nerve saying this stuff without mentioning the fact that Canada has a 16% higher mortality rate for women with breast cancer.

or how about the story the other day from the UK that said women HER2 positive breast cancer were going to be denied Tykerb because it costs too much...

Someone here put it best a few weeks ago......

She’s an a**hole.

Perhaps a little raw for some, but exactingly accurate.

You just did. Remember, some poor schlub over at Justice Department has to read everything posted on FR.

They are looking for substantial deviations so they can "go affa' ya".

I don't care, and besides, Michelle obviously has much less real risk of ever developing breast cancer than virtually all other women ~ cain't say that 'bout her thighs though ~ definitely THUNDEROUS is not quite the word.

Nope. She knows exactly what she is saying and saying what she means. Once obama care is implemented, the fools and idiots that voted for it will learn the hard way what she is saying. But they are too stupid to realize it.

Hey, Michelle. If you get YOUR way, women getting breast cancer in the US will DIE.

What insurance policy did that woman pay for? If she bought something with a very high deductible or a 20% co-pay with no limit, then she got cheaper insurance at the cost of having to pay more in the bad years. If the insurance company is following the contract then no one has anything to complain about. It would be like me being upset at having to pay $500 if I'm in a wreck, even though I bought the $500 deductible car insurance.

“My wife has been treated for metastatic breast cancer for 8 years now...can’t say we have had any issues with our insurance company at all.”

My wife has been treated for Hep C and related problems for about that long, and every year I pay the max out-of-pocket (currently $6200) plus another $2500 for various prescriptions. It’s a struggle, but I have a decent insurance plan that I’d rather have than Obamacare (and the out-of-pocket is a small percentage of her total treatment costs).

If Michelle Obama lived in the UK, she would have to wait a year for a mammogram. By the time she found the cancer she’d be dead. Hey Michelle, still want that socialized medicine

Michelle Obama’s patient-dumping scheme

By Michelle Malkin • March 3, 2009

Back in August, the Chicago Sun-Times reported on Michelle Obama and David Axelrod’s involvement in a University of Chicago Medical Center program that steered patients who don’t have private insurance — primarily poor, black people — to other health care facilities.
