The 1989 movie Field of Dreams was about an Iowa farmer, Ray Kinsella, who was supernaturally commanded to build a baseball field on his farm. Once built, the 1919 Chicago White Sox were reincarnated to play on it.
There is a Field of Dreams in Philadelphia like the movie, this field also has reincarnated a past team - because the 2009 Philadelphia Phillies seem to be a reincarnation of the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics.
They have several things in common.
The 2009 Philadelphia Phillies ...

Red Sox fan here. Go Phils! (the enemy of my enemy...)
Who provides them and are they real diamonds?
Hope to get to get some revenge for NY’s sweep of the 1950 Whiz Kids. I’m still trying to fathom two pennants in a row...that just doesn’t happen in Philly!
recently that is...
“Field of Dreams” sucked.
Philadelphia sucks.
Well if they can win the WS again this year, they’ll be over 2/3 the way the there. Offensively I think this Phillies team is close, but I don’t think the Phillies pitching can be compared to that of the 29’ Athletics.
I kind of like the whimsical nostalgic baseball piece once in a while. I didn’t particularly care for this one. It just seemed contrived, a bit over the top for me.
That being said, I think the Phillies handled themselves very well during this series with the Dodgers. Particularly with regard to the offense, the Phillies kicked the Dodger’s butts, but good.
Some will say the pitching was so much better, and that’s why. I don’t think so. The Dodger batters were swinging at pitches a little leager would have laid off of. I can’t remember how many times the Dodger batters had a zero and two count with no strikes in the zone on that screen display. And lest someone say that display wasn’t very accurate, I’d like to remind them that some of those pitches were just an inch or two off the ground and a good foot off the plate, and others were actually headed at the batter inside and were swung at and fowled off.
When it comes to defense, the Dodgers were playing out of position on a number of players. Right handed batters saw the Dodger third baseman playing 15 feet off the line. Sure enough, the ball was hit between him and the bag.
Ramirez had a ball go in the corner off a right handed batter in left, taking what seemed like an eternity getting to the ball. Then the batter was able to extend that hit to a triple, as Ramirez missed two cut offs for a very doable play at third to get this guy.
The mindset of the Phillies was so much different than the Dodgers at the plate. They watched their zones, were content to take the walk or go for the short game, not going for the fence with every swing.
I salute the Phillies, because they wanted to win more than the Dodgers. I say that because the Phillies cared enough to play fundamental baseball. The Dodgers didn’t, and I think this series reflected very poorly on the manager Torre.
I don’t know how strong the Yankees are this year, but I do not the Phillies are going to the World Series with a determination to win. If they play like they did against the Dodgers, rock solid on fundamentals, they have a very good chance, no matter how good the Yankees are.
Good luck to them.
I say this as a Dodger fan.
How many N.L. pennants have the Phillies won? I think just a few, 1950, 1980 (World Series victory), 1983, 1993, and last year’s World Series victory. They may have won the fewest pennants or World Series of any of baseball’s original 16 franchises.
The only National League teams to win consecutive World Series were the 1907-08 Chicago Cubs, the 1921-22 New York Giants, and the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds. So we could be seeing some more history with these Phillies.
...but I do know the Phillies...

Read the article, it tells you how many pennants and world series the Phils won.
I saw it. Could be I’m all wet, that’s still my take on it. The article just didn’t make a connection with me. Not being a full-time fan certainly plays into it I’m sure.
I appreciate the mention, because I realize this is an issue where people can differ, and I think Philly fans and particularly this guy are certainly going to differ. After all, they’re more knowledgeable about the team than I am.
The writer lost me when he tried to weave in a Field of Dreams moment. That I most certainly don’t see. Other similarities to the old team probably would have had more sway with me without that.
I agree. Lefty Grove was one of the best ever.
Philly does have a great hitting lineup - has an American League feel to it.
