If you plunged your family into hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt to send your son or daughter to Notre Dame thinking your hard earned money would get your child a truly Catholic education this will disappoint and infuriate you.
If the knot in your stomach from Barack Obamas selection as last springs commencement speaker is just now beginning to loosen up hang on to your blood pressure medicine here comes another anti Catholic stunt from Father John Jenkins the schools president.
Notre Dame, the University of Our Lady mind you, has used student organization funds to finance a trip for five of its students to Washington DC for a rally supporting Gay marriage a practice which directly violates the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
Apparently Father Jenkins feels he hasnt made his hatred for the teachings of the Catholic Church clear enough. Having a commencement speaker who supports allowing miracle abortion surviving infants to die in a broom closet because abortion is more sacred to him than life, wasnt sick and perverted enough for Father Jenkins.
Sticking his finger in your eye and laughing
The Obama stunt should have signaled Notre Dames surrender of any claim to being a Catholic university. The little school in South Bend is now no more Catholic than U. Wisconsin at Madison.
Father Jenkins must be starting his own religion. He is certainly close to being recognized as the head of a Jenkinsist Catholic church that caters to the secular world while making fools of those who support his school.
Father Patrick J. Reilly, President of the Cardinal Newman Society challenged this grotesque move with a penetrating question, What university seeking to reassure families of its Catholic identity would pay for students to attack the family and oppose Catholic teachings on marriage?

(not just the pat answer, “he excommunicated himself” but a real public excommunication)
Removal of the privilege to call themselves Catholic would say "Yes". Paging Pope Benedict XVI and Bishop D'Arcy.

“.....challenged this grosteque move with a penetrating question....”
I would not use the word “penetrating” while discussing the issue of so-called “gay marriage.”
“Self excommunication” is debatably worse because there’s no medicinal component. It just IS, and you keep doing whatever you’re doing that leaves you outside the fold, and maybe you never come back.
At least formal excommunication makes it almost certain that someone will have to stop and consider what they’re doing and why they’ve received this corrective action.
I think the Church is worried about opening up a Pandora’s Box of excommunications if they tackle it in earnest. i.e., if you excommunicate Nancy Pelosi, well, then you have to excommunicate Chris Dodd and joe Biden the Kennedys and then Tony Blair gets excommunicated three seconds after converting to the faith, and then you’ve got Silvio Burlosconi and now lets move over to Notre Dame and DePaul and Georgetown and now you have to go after the dissident convents and where does it end?
Benedict, above all, hates dissent, hates heresy, hates politicians who mock and denigrate the faith. But I think there’s a much larger issue - especially in this plugged-in age of communication, and that’s taking the Church - which is already a target - and turning it into an overt enemy of the state that must be crushed...
It’s really a hard situation, and ultimately, it’s a climate that politicians and high-profile people will regret creating, since they have deprived themselves of the medicine (formal excommunication) that will get them on the right path.
All that said - let me clarify one thing. The Church, I believe, absolutely needs to publicly censure Jenkins and any other clergy who facilitate such an abomination as this story presents. In that sense, I am disappointed in the lack of response from Rome. Granted, Notre Dame is only one university in the world that the Church ministers to, but Obama’s visit made it the Vatican’s business, not just the local ordinary’s. D’Arcy can only do so much - he needs the weight of the Vatican behind him to take the kind of corrective action we envision...
I consider he excommunicated himself to be the biggest copout on the part of the RCC.
I’m with you, but his name is Benedict XVI.
I think the Church gives too much leeway to Americans.
Americans think everything is a ‘democracy’ (aka Mob Rule). They have educated themselves out of understanding that the Pope is the Pope, the HEAD of the Catholic Church on earth, the Vicar of Christ. Being the Head of the Church is not a popularity contest. And unlike “laws” you don’t like, so you ignore (like speed limits), the Laws of the Church are made in Stone (2 Tablets) and are backed up by The Bible, The Magisterium, and Tradition. They are irrefutable and unchangeable. But you wouldn’t know that if you live in “Cafeteria Catholic” America.
True Catholicism, Pure Catholicism is not being taught in many Diocese in the USofA.
And this IS to the detriment of this Country. Catholics supported the Abortion-Euthanasia Presidential Candidate and STILL do. Even AFTER Pope Benedict XVI said that Abortion trumps Social Justice. Catholics ignored him. To their peril.
Catholic Congress people must think that God will give them some kind of special dispensation for all the lies they’ve told on the House and Senate Floor . . . for the “good” of the collective. They don’t know the heart of God or the heart of the Pope. Abortion trumps Social Justice. Abortion kills the very people for whom Social Justice is needed.
Rom 1:32 32Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
Rome needs to stay out of my country’s politics.
If they want to instruct their adherents in morality and virtue, in the hopes that such instruction will help to bring about good governance (viz. saving babies’ lives, for instance), that’s fine and very welcome. But when they start exerting what are purely internal powers, not to bring erring members back into the fold, but to wield political influence, they need to be reined in.
The end does not justify the means.
BTTT
This statement makes no sense. Certainly the Catholic Church has some rights, or would you have the State dictate to the Church who should be approved as a speaker and who should not be approved to speak at a CATHOLIC school.

How can it possibly be “wielding political influence” if a CATHOLIC school acts to support CATHOLIC Church doctrine?
“The end does not justify the means.”
This too makes no sense. Are you comparing the Rome Catholic Church to communism because you don't like the idea of keeping an abortion supporter out of a privately owned Catholic building, or would you have the State control the Church?
I agree with all of what you say, otherwise.
I should’ve addressed my post to those who want Rome to excommunicate politicians, instead of to you. It was a general comment, following the slightly-off-topic direction this discussion had veered in post #6, and shouldn’t have been a reply to your original post.
My apologies. I hope my remarks make more sense in this light.
